Naturally Glamping: Belle exterior

General

  • Bell tents at a quiet Devon site 15 minutes' drive from Newton Abbot
  • A 20-minute drive to Dawlish beach, Exeter and Dartmoor
  • Double bed and firepit/barbecue provided

A secluded slice of Devon countryside no doubt sounds pretty good on its own – but it gets better when you learn that Naturally Glamping is easily accessed from the A380, thus saving you from any worries about finding your way down little country lanes.

This lovely location is part of a peaceful rural Devon working farm about 15 minutes’ drive from Newton Abbot, and it’s a place that’s all about relaxed stays – think lake views, woodland walks and a stream running down to a lake that connects to the river below. Unsurprisingly, it’s a bit of a wildlife haven too, and you may well spot glow worms and bats at night thanks to the lack of lighting around this off-grid place (although there is minimal solar electricity for when you need it).

The surroundings may be pleasingly wild here but the accommodation certainly isn’t – in fact, the bell tents are rather smart, with a double bed made up ready for your arrival and all sorts of extra bits including bunting, fairy lights, rugs and a lantern to create a cosy atmosphere. Outdoor furniture is supplied too, along with a firepit/barbecue (just the place to settle down for an evening tending the grill while you admire the views…)

There’s plenty of space here too, as the tents are set well apart in a 2.5-acre meadow. For facilities, it’s a short walk to the toilet/shower block. Elsewhere around the site you can wander off to meet the horses and alpacas or head over the stepping stones to access several miles of forest trail (heading all the way to the local pub if you wish).

Please note

The park caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Minimum spacing of 10 metres between pitches.

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Group bookings of 3 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

You are responsible for your own safety (please note there is a small lake and stream on site).

For 4x4 owners and braver drivers, there’s parking very close to pitches. For the rest, access from the main car park involves a 200-metre walk down a steep track, which can be slippery at times (wheelbarrows are provided for your gear.) Not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

Nice site - felt a bit unloved.06/12/2022

The bell tent was lovely and well equipped.
The site itself is on a sloping hill going down to a river and there are lovely walks through the forest on the other side of the river.
The location of the site is fantastic with local ammenities near by and lots to do in bad weather as well as good.

    Disliked:

The site just felt a bit unloved. Even though I knew it was self-check in, it would have been nice if someone had come round at any stage during the stay to see if people were ok. For example, only one of the futons in our tent was made up and the other was really difficult to figure out. We did it eventually but it would have been nice to see someone who was interested in our stay earlier on and could have helped.

Also the toilets and showers were not cleaned at all in the entire time we were there - two nights. Finally, the soap had run out in the toilet when we arrived - I bought a new one when we were out - but the old one was never removed or replaced.

From the manager...

Hello.
Really pleased you loved the location and had a nice time in the area.
Unfortunately that weekend we had some staffing issues, so there was nobody on site for those 2 days. We normally have a site manager who lives on site and is around for help.
Most people love the feel of being left to themselves but knowing we are just a phone call/text away (as mentioned in the arrival info) if they should need anything.
We leave the futons in sofa mode so the tents is more spacious and people can relax. I will be sure to put some instructions in the tent though if it is a bit fiddly.
Thanks for the feedback

Lovely grounds, peaceful with the lake and not too many tents. Shower and toilet facilities were very good. Lanterns were a nice touch too.

The hill is very steep but I got my VW T5 up and down a few times driving sensibly and not stopping half way.

    Disliked:

Not really any dislikes but the grass was very overgrown around the lake and middle of the field. I think this may be due to the time of year ad everything is very green at the moment!

Really liked the fields the tents are situated in and the distance from each tent was perfect 👍 Super pretty all around and nice little woodland walk to take the dog out. The tent itself was REALLY nice. All the bedding was super fluffy and inviting. It was actually much nicer than the photo on the website. And there was loads of very thoughtful items for us inside - hot water bottles/marshmallows. There was a list of all the appliances included in the listing when I booked it, but I was pleasantly surprised of how well it had been equipped.

    Disliked:

There wasn’t quite enough light in the loo even in the day. I’m pretty sure the listing suggests bringing a torch which we did, but thought that was for night time use.
I would have also preferred a more roomy shower. I found it a bit claustrophobic. Both these things are nitpicking though. We had such a lovely time.I’m just trying to mention anything that would make it a 5⭐️ for me.

From the manager...

Thanks so much for the feedback. So pleased you had a lovely time and enjoyed the tent and surroundings. Photos are fab!
We will look at getting some extra lighting in the toilet block, but have to keep lighting a very minimum due to bat conservation rules. I will make sure guests know they are welcome to use the lantern in their tent to take to the toilet block too.
Thanks again

Nice secluded area with gorgeous walks.

The only thing is if you’re staying for longer than one night and you want to keep your phone charged then to bring your own power bank as the one provided only charges your phone once.

The location is beautiful, the tent and the set up inside and out were lovely, the distance between the tents was good. The little extras. A very good nights sleep, peaceful. Calming.

    Disliked:

No obvious way to get fire wood when we arrived, heavy reliance on technology to communicate with people arriving. The parking and access to the site was a bit hairy.

Local attractions

If you’re hankering after beach days, the closest places to find them are at Teignmouth (15 minutes’ drive) and Dawlish (20 minutes) – both excellent options for some time on the sands. Or maybe woodland walks are more your style? If so, head for the trails at Haldon Forest (10 minutes) instead.

In fact, there are lots of walking trails to stride along in the surrounding area, especially if you make your way into Dartmoor National Park for the likes of Cantonteign Falls (20 minutes) and Haytor Rocks (25 minutes). Meanwhile, outdoor activity of a different variety is at Dainton Park Golf Club (15 minutes).

For a change of scenery, step back in time at Powderham Castle (20 minutes) or Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves (half an hour), or plan a city day wandering around Exeter (20 minutes), visiting the cathedral, the House That Moved and the intriguing underground passages.
