Tranquility

General

  • Wild camping on a working organic farm
  • Entertainment barn with sofas and tourist info
  • Guided walks, Dartmoor tours, archery and clay shooting available

The facts, given straight: Horizontal Leisure Club near Devon's Newton Abbot is a place in which to lose yourself for a few days (or maybe weeks). There are a full 15 acres of woodland for guests to spread themselves out among: you'll spy peace, you'll spy quiet, you'll spy maybe getting lost for quite some time…

This is wild camping on a working organic farm where the inhabitants include South Devon and Red Devon cattle, complete with occasional calves, as well as Texel sheep lambing in early March or thereabouts each year – and all quietly set about 10 miles from Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren.

The farm has an entertainment barn, the Pound House, with sofas, tourist info and a bar/counter: settle down here on wet days or maybe just to relax after a Devon explore. Speaking of which, the farm team can arrange small 20-minute guided farm walks through ancient woodland, or tours of Dartmoor in a Land Rover Discovery. Archery and clay shooting with lessons for novices is also available on site.

Mains water, litter bins, and fire extinguishers are provided for guests, and there's also a portable toilet.

A pub owned by Horizontal Leisure Club, the Palk Arms, is just over a mile away and dishes up food and real ales, alongside splendid Devon views from the restaurant over the Teign valley.

The campsite is basic, but in my opinion all the better for it, with beautiful views and a totally relaxed atmosphere. The local information provided was extremely helpful and there was plenty to do in the surrounding area, or if you prefer to do very little it was perfect for that too. Nicholas the owner was welcoming and friendly, with an extensive range of local knowledge.
Thank you again and we Weill hopefully see you soon.

Nothing, had to leave didn’t stay more than an hour

    Disliked:

It is the size of a garden, I don’t know how we would of been able to put up our tent with our one vehicule and the other 2 lots of customers on site. We would of had no choice than to pitch up next to the one Portaloo toilet, this had not being cleaned before we got there. Over filled and poo was up the sides and toilet roll. You could see where he previously got ride of the stuff over the other side of the fence. Wasn’t there for arrival and said he was too busy to come now even though he had 3 separate customers arriving that day. There was not a sofa area onsite like it says online. There was nothing to explain the walks ect. I wouldn’t even have stayed there if it was free. Luckily we found a beautiful campsite just 10 minutes up the road called ‘Hennock Hideaways’.

From the manager...

This customer's complaint is mostly about the state of the portaloo having not been cleaned up in time. This was entirely my fault as I was waylaid unavoidably at a business meeting in a local town and didn't get back in time to clear up and disinfect properly. Cleaning up took me half an hour and the next customer arrived an hour later and gave me a relatively good review. The next customers were delighted. As regards the smallness of the site I would say that the photos on pitchup.com do not hide the size and aspect so this complainant could have easily chosen a larger site which is what they did. There are only 4 pitches for tents so that peace and quiet and an undisturbed off the beaten track site are maintained. I have apologised and sorted out their money back. This is only the second complaint in 5 years.

The location was amazing. The site is very quiet and is away from traffic noise

    Disliked:

The allocated fenced camping area is relatively small. Most of the large field however, is unsuitable for camping due to its steep incline.

Love how pea edil it is!! Far away from it all and yet a 3 km from the nearest town centre. Love the phone calls and txt giving me indications to arrive. We had the centre to ourselves so we were super calm. Bring your wood.

    Disliked:

The toilet could do with a tidy up and the shed with one too. The owner although had intentions he wasn’t around but hey is life! We weren’t sure where to put our tent but as we were alone we took all the space so that was great!
