General

  • Wild camping on a working organic farm
  • Entertainment barn with sofas and tourist info
  • Guided walks, Dartmoor tours, archery and clay shooting available

The facts, given straight: Horizontal Leisure Club near Devon's Newton Abbot is a place in which to lose yourself for a few days (or maybe weeks). There are a full 15 acres of woodland for guests to spread themselves out among: you'll spy peace, you'll spy quiet, you'll spy maybe getting lost for quite some time…

This is wild camping on a working organic farm where the inhabitants include South Devon and Red Devon cattle, complete with occasional calves, as well as Texel sheep lambing in early March or thereabouts each year – and all quietly set about 10 miles from Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren.

The farm has an entertainment barn, the Pound House, with sofas, tourist info and a bar/counter: settle down here on wet days or maybe just to relax after a Devon explore. Speaking of which, the farm team can arrange small 20-minute guided farm walks through ancient woodland, or tours of Dartmoor in a Land Rover Discovery. Archery and clay shooting with lessons for novices is also available on site.

Mains water, litter bins, and fire extinguishers are provided for guests, and there's also a portable toilet.

A pub owned by Horizontal Leisure Club, the Palk Arms, is just over a mile away and dishes up food and real ales, alongside splendid Devon views from the restaurant over the Teign valley.

I booked the entire campsite for myself and a group of friends. The location was fantastic, so peaceful with no one around which was perfect for us because sometimes we can be a bit noisy. The site was a perfect location with amazing views and great walks in the surrounding area. The site only had one portaloo, but it was very clean.

    Disliked:

The pitches were on a slight incline

From the manager...

Thank you so much for your kind review. I could see you were perhaps a little short of space with four large tents and cars and I will make sure some more space is available for next season for larger tents, which have definitely got larger since I originally started the site. I will balance this with keeping the site quiet and reasonably ecological, as there are plenty of other large sites that are not quiet nor peaceful if there are 50-60 tents for example.

Very Very Small Limited Spaces and on a Hill. Makes it very annoying not being on level ground

From the manager...

The campsite is not suited to large tents currently. I will try and make some provision for two more spaces for large tents for next season but pitchup system doesn't grade for tent sizes. This is a smallish site for peace and quiet. Recent campers have been ecstatic about the eco site as per 2-3 10/10 reviews recently. I will be expanding the camping possibilities by installing a larger tent in the nearby woods and a bunkhouse with loo and shower for next season. Nobody has seemingly been too bothered about dead flat ground up to now; this is Devon not Norfolk.

Horizontal leisure club is perfect for those wanting to have a wild camping experience with running water. There is plenty of space to explore, secluded and feels private, with a beautiful view from the top of the hills.

    Disliked:

The only struggle we experienced was ticks - we did spend a good hour removing them from ourselves after having collected fire wood from around the area and sitting down on the grass at the top of the hill. There are cows around the area so I suppose it's not too unusual for this place to be a tick habitat. So I would recommend taking some insect repellent. Other than that, the place was very chilled and we enjoyed our time camping there.

From the manager...

Thank you for your kindly comments. All my cattle and sheep are on the other side of the farm so I expect the ticks may be in the bracken in the field. These ticks are more likely to attach to sheep but I am sorry ticks were a nuisance. I intend to clear some of the bracken over the next 12 months -sheer heat probably accelerated the numbers.

A lovely and niche little campsite. The host was very accommodating and had lots of knowledge of things to do in the local area. The campsite had limited facilities (just a portaloo and clean running water) however this suited us perfectly!

Would strongly recommend camping here if you're looking for a peaceful and quiet campsite with only a few pitches. The 4 pitches are spread out far enough that you almost feel you have the field to yourself and the campsite is very cleanly presented and in a beautiful location. We will definitely be staying here again next summer :)

There's no wifi but no problem getting 4g whatsoever

The campsite is basic, but in my opinion all the better for it, with beautiful views and a totally relaxed atmosphere. The local information provided was extremely helpful and there was plenty to do in the surrounding area, or if you prefer to do very little it was perfect for that too. Nicholas the owner was welcoming and friendly, with an extensive range of local knowledge.

Couldn’t even stay more than an hour let alone over night07/27/2020

Nothing, had to leave didn’t stay more than an hour

    Disliked:

It is the size of a garden, I don’t know how we would of been able to put up our tent with our one vehicule and the other 2 lots of customers on site. We would of had no choice than to pitch up next to the one Portaloo toilet, this had not being cleaned before we got there. Over filled and poo was up the sides and toilet roll. You could see where he previously got ride of the stuff over the other side of the fence. Wasn’t there for arrival and said he was too busy to come now even though he had 3 separate customers arriving that day. There was not a sofa area onsite like it says online. There was nothing to explain the walks ect. I wouldn’t even have stayed there if it was free. Luckily we found a beautiful campsite just 10 minutes up the road called ‘Hennock Hideaways’.

From the manager...

This customer's complaint is mostly about the state of the portaloo having not been cleaned up in time. This was entirely my fault as I was waylaid unavoidably at a business meeting in a local town and didn't get back in time to clear up and disinfect properly. Cleaning up took me half an hour and the next customer arrived an hour later and gave me a relatively good review. The next customers were delighted. As regards the smallness of the site I would say that the photos on pitchup.com do not hide the size and aspect so this complainant could have easily chosen a larger site which is what they did. There are only 4 pitches for tents so that peace and quiet and an undisturbed off the beaten track site are maintained. I have apologised and sorted out their money back. This is only the second complaint in 5 years.
