  • Riverside site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant
  • A couple of minutes’ drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Newton Abbot and 30 from Torquay
Want to feel like you’re getting a secluded and peaceful getaway without having to give up being close to other people? At Dartmoor Halfway Inn, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Newton Abbot in Devon, South West England, you get the best of both worlds. Two minutes from the edge of Dartmoor National Park, The Halfway Inn is well placed for exploration – you can walk, cycle, ride, canoe or climb your way around the park, travel from scenic village to scenic village, or learn about the history of the area. The site and pub are dog friendly too, so ramblers should feel free to bring their canine companions along for the walk. On site, kick back by the river Lemon, which passes just behind the campgrounds, or relax in the open green field – kids who aren’t quite ready to sit still for the evening can burn off any residual energy in the on-site playground. When the whole family is ready for dinner, stroll over to the Halfway Inn for a slap-up meal, then knock back a few beers or a couple of glasses of wine – or juice for the kids – and toddle back to where you’re spending the night less than 200 metres away. If you’d prefer a change of scenery, there are plenty of other restaurants in Newton Abbot and within 10 minutes’ drive of Halfway Inn.

What customers say

This is a clean and well-maintained campsite with private pitches separated by hedges. Guests consistently praise the friendly staff and the excellent food and atmosphere at the adjoining pub. While the location is ideal for exploring Devon, some visitors mention road noise and a lack of mobile signal. A recurring concern is the limited number of toilets and showers, particularly when the site is busy, and occasional unpleasant odours around the toilet block have been noted.

Liked Pitches were private and the pub was nice and the toilets/shower blocks were clean.

Disliked Massive gravel road through the whole campsite so really dusty, there is only one ladies toilet (the rest are portaloos) and the toilets REALLY smell.

Liked Friendly team. Well laid out site that’s secure and dog friendly.

Great facilities with the pub/restaurant on site.

Very hot weather and demand on the cleaning staff was big due to the ‘full house’ but they worked very hard.

Liked Private pitches

Disliked We stayed before a few years ago and really liked it this time was different the Smell by the toilets from septic tank or drains was unbearable didnt feel clean when having a shower.
Only 1 toilet which was is not enough for the site especially when there is a lot of tents including us during our stay. Cleaners shut off mens as cleaning if thats what you can call it! Prime time on the morning when people want to get ready and go out
Fag nubs all over our pitch they must not get checked after people check out not the best especially when we have a young child. Some people didn't respect noise levels late at night and very early morning.
Washing up water was cold
Time to go in and out of site which didn't bother us too much but way at another time
Take ages to let you in

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked To start even before we set off on our holiday our group got a few phones calls to say we could actually save money if we wanted which i thought was very helpful and kind

loved the price!
our group stayed in the pitches right at the other end away from the smelly toilets and sewage smell and was very happy with how safe our group was for all the children and also the shade we got from the beating sun in the morning and day

soon as we arrived there was massive water jugs in the bar that were always full with ice cold water for anyone to have for free which was just amazing to see.

Disliked only complaints from me personally was the noise late at night from the cars , tanks , aeroplanes , trucks and motorbikes wizzing up and down the main road , be warned .. very loud

and secondly the smell , the horrible smell of hot slimey sewage eachday around the toilet blocks , drinking water stations and porta toilets
BUT every single day a massive sewage truck turned up too take away the smell which was very good to see , at least they were actively trying to fix the problem and that was very clear to see . also everyday there was like 4 cleaners that came out to clean everything like twice a day.

our group had to do alot of 20 - 40 min drives eachday to actually get near anything ( beaches , main POIs , towns )
if you stay here make sure you have multiple cars and drivers for the week as there is alot of driving oh and whole entire playlist of katseye too very important!

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch (comfort)

Liked Pitches were private, and WiFi Honestly that’s the only decent thing about this site.

Disliked 1 toilet, 2 showers for each gender for the whole camp site which I think is around 20 pitches. The showers were ice cold, not cleaned either, I had to buy my own cleaning supplies and cleaned before me & my children showered. Pitch size stated ‘unlimited’ however my tent barely fit on it which meant my children had no where to play. I even gave my tent measurements when I booked. Tried to complain to the bar staff but they didn’t care. Had to ring a bell to be let into the camp site which is great because of safety but waiting over 5/10 minutes each time isn’t great. No one came around to even ask how the stay was going. Wasps nests in the separation hedges, 2 out of 4 children got stung. Pictures are definitely deceiving on the website. We were booked for a week but ended up leaving days early because of everything.

Local attractions

You can barely turn a corner in this part of Devon without coming face to face with a stately manor – Bradley, Compton Castle, Greenway, Castle Drogo, Coleton Fishacre, Cockington Court, Torre Abbey and Dartington Hall are all with 45 minutes’ drive, and a visit to the spectacular 16-sided A la Ronde, 35 minutes away, is highly recommended. Tipplers might like to make the trip to Buckfast Abbey outside Buckfastleigh (10 minutes), though you won’t be able to do tours or tastings at the factory. If the Abbey doesn’t get you steaming, head to the South Devon Railway and climb aboard the vintage train, or abandon alcohol-related puns altogether and head to the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary. Fawlty Towers fans will be keen to learn that Torquay is less than 30 minutes away. Although you can no longer visit the real-life hotel behind the comedy, there’s plenty to keep you entertained: follow the Agatha Christie Mile to get a glimpse of some of the spots that inspired the murder mystery maven, dive below the Devon coast in the prehistoric Kents Cavern, or play giant at Babbacombe Model Village.
