The pitches

  • Back to basics South Devon site a half-hour walk from the coast path
  • A 35-minute drive from Dartmouth and Salcombe on the Dart estuary
  • Manor house grounds setting with wildlife on site and walks nearby
You know a site has to be doing something (or probably quite a few things) right when they get families returning year after year… sometimes even across the generations. One such place is South Allington House, where pitches are in the grounds of a grand Georgian house in the south Devon countryside. It’s a peaceful and back to basics setup here, with the spacious grass pitches having good access to plentiful facilities, including a spacious toilet and shower block as well as laundry facilities. There’s no wifi, but there’s plenty of wildlife to provide entertainment – the four-acre grounds are home to badgers, foxes, horseshoe bats, ducklings and frogs, and protected areas have been set aside for birds. Part of a small rural hamlet, this site is well situated for the coast – you can walk to the coast path in about half an hour, visit stunning beaches like Lannacombe and East Portlemouth, or board the ferry to Salcombe about 10 minutes’ drive away. Meanwhile, the surrounding South Devon National Landscape has a lot to offer in terms of attractive walking and cycling trails.

What customers say

This campsite is highly praised for its peaceful, beautiful, and idyllic rural setting, offering spacious pitches and a back-to-nature experience. Guests consistently highlight the excellent, clean facilities, including hot showers and good washing-up areas. The lack of phone signal is viewed as a positive by many, contributing to a relaxing atmosphere. It's considered great for families and dog owners, with ample space for children to play and explore. The location is ideal for accessing local beaches and coastal walks, though access via narrow Devon lanes is noted. Some guests mentioned minor issues with shower block cleanliness or capacity during busy periods, but overall, the site is recommended for its tranquility and natural beauty, with many expressing a desire to return.

Liked A return to this beautiful site. Everything you need and nothing that you don't. Phone signal for my provider was nonexistent, but that is a plus not a minus!

Local attractions

A walk on the South West Coast Path is a good way to see some of the seaside scenery – local stretches here can take you to places like Lannacombe beach, Start Point Lighthouse, Gara Rock beach and East Portlemouth beach, all of which are a little way off the usual tourist trail. The popular spots are popular for a reason though, so you may also like to check out the lovely beach at Blackpool Sands (25 minutes’ drive) or see what’s going on in Salcombe (35 minutes, or 15 minutes via the East Portlemouth ferry). Dartmouth (35 minutes), with its steam railway, watersports and Greenway House, is another top pick nearby. For some town time, both Kingsbridge (25 minutes) and Totnes (40 minutes) make lovely places to have a wander around, visiting the markets and poking around in indie shops. If you’ve got the kids in tow, you may find the rides of Woodlands Family Theme Park (half an hour) to be more the ticket, with its rides, shows and animals to meet.
