  • Back to basics South Devon site a half-hour walk from the coast path
  • A 35-minute drive from Dartmouth and Salcombe on the Dart estuary
  • Manor house grounds setting with wildlife on site and trail access
South Allington House is a sweet spot for a South Devon getaway. Just a half-hour's walk away from the coastal path, this small and sheltered site is family run and popular with young families (some of which have carried on visiting for generations). It’s a peaceful and back to basics setup here, but not without a grand setting in the grounds of a manor house. The spacious grass pitches have good access to plentiful facilities, including a spacious toilet and shower block as well as laundry facilities. You won’t just share the four-acre grounds with other guests; following RSPB advice, there are areas specially made for local birds and wildlife, including badgers, foxes, horseshoe bats, ducklings and frogs (many of whom have taken up permanent residence). The rural hamlet is well situated too. It’s a 35-minute drive from the site to Salcombe (or less if you take the East Portlemouth ferry, which departs 10 minutes’ drive away) and Dartmouth on the Dart estuary. Stunning Devon beaches are in the surrounding area (take note of Lannacombe within walking distance and East Portlemouth beach, 15 minutes’ drive away), but if your first focus is hiking to soak up some of the scenery, there are easily accessible walking and cycling trails nearby in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Beautiful campsite with good facilities and close to lovely beaches and the coastal path. They also allow dogs and campfires, both of which are important to us! This was our second stay at South Allington and it won't be our last.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked It is what it says in the tin.... rual, scenic quiet and tranquil back to basics and nature. You need to be self contained and able to pitch up off grid. Set in a tranquil valley there are no shops around and not even a phone signal to whistle up a delivery. Site is just two sloping fields with a stream along the bottom of them feeding into and from a small lake with an unmetaled track running along the length of the camper van field, so levelling and getting a perfect pitch is down to you, your parking and your ramps.
Access leading to the site is through a few miles of typical narrow hedged Devon lanes, so if reversing competently isn't your forte or you have a moosive van or motor home it's maybe not the place for you but other than that it's a perfect little rural getaway.
Lovely site clean and tidy facilities. Everything you basically need. Site is fully lit at night when there is a full moon otherwise don't forget a torch.

Liked Lovely campsite, really chilled atmosphere and very family friendly. We had a great pitch overlooking the lake and the kids had so much space to play!
Will definitely be returning 😊

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Wonderful site, nature surrounds you while staying. It is close to the sea side not far away. Toilets and the facilities are clean and enough. Lovely owners.

I'm not going to say disliked but there is almost no service which was very good for me since it allowed me to get away from distraction. But if you willing to climb a little hill, you'll have service.
