General

  • Quiet family-run farm near Kingsbridge
  • Spacious showers with free hot water
  • Less than a mile from the nearest pub

Devon has its fair share of big campsites and busy holiday parks, and full of variety they are too. But if you’re yearning for a more quiet vibe, a stay at Mounts Farm Touring Park should have you sorted – it’s quiet, family run and with a relaxed feel, run by Karen and her friendly team.

The pitches at Mounts Farm are generously sized and set in sheltered Devon fields, and the amenities are of excellent quality, with spacious showers, free hot water and a coin-operated laundry. There’s also an information area with a library.

The on-site shop sells groceries and camping accessories, while for a sit-down meal the Good Pub Guide’s Fortescue Arms is less than a mile away.

We arrived on Saturday afternoon, the owners greeted me, they were very warm and friendly. They had a little out building with leaflets on things to do, including the local indian and chinese - which deliver to your pitch! They also have a small shop on site for essentials and an outbuilding with a washing up basin, a fridge and a microwave to use.
The site was nice and clean, pitches were well maintained and lots of hook-ups close by.
The location was great, the sat nav brought us straight here with no issues and it was easy to find. Kingsbridge town was a short drive away with a small Morrisons and a small Tesco which was very useful. We seemed to be the only tent pitched here, but I suspect that was due to being late in the season. There were plenty of caravans and motorhomes with fabulous awnings on site. Lots seemed to be long term pitchers. The toilets, sinks and bathrooms floors were always clean, and the showers were amazingly hot!
We visited the nearby towns of Totnes, Salcombe and Dartmouth, which were all gorgeous and very quaint with views of the Kingsbridge estuary and the seaside. Plymouth was roughly 40-45 minutes away where we visited the town centre for excellent shopping, the Plymouth Hoe (lighthouse and Army barracks) and the barbican which was a fabulous place on the harbourside for food and drink. We did also drive further afield to the beautiful towns of Looe, Fowey, Mevagissey, and also even further to Newquay and Tintagel which were 1hr 40mins away.

    Disliked:

Whilst the bathroom floors, sinks and toilets were clean every time I used them...the showers were not. They often had hairs stuck to the walls, and cobwebs. The shower curtains and grouting had black mildew in places which was unpleasant. Whilst they were ridiculously hot, which was much appreciated in the cold mornings, the pressure is very low. They really need updating for modern showers with a better pressure. I couldn't use conditioner, because despite having textured tiles to prevent slips, use of conditioner made them very slippery. I did also find that automatic lights often went off so I ended up showering in the dark!
We could only find 1 petrol station in Kingsbridge which was owned by Co-op, so be warned as prices were 4p a litre dearer. Only got fuel once here and made sure we topped up elsewhere before returning to the campsite.
Wifi was stalling on our pitch making it unusable but we made use of our 4G instead (O2)

This is a quiet site with various fields for caravans and tents. The pitches are a generous size. There is one toilet/shower block which is basic but clean, perfectly adequate for our stay. There is a little shop for essentials. The owners Keith and Karen were very welcoming and gave us tips on local attractions etc. The site is well placed for visiting lots of beaches and villages.

Local attractions

You’ll find enough to do around Mounts Farm Touring Park to keep you busy for aeons, including sandy beaches, historic houses, gardens, family days out and exploring the towns and villages of Devon.

The park is near the market town of Kingsbridge, which has a market three times a week and a farmers’ market once a month. Kingsbridge’s quay has a tourist information centre and is also where you can take a river cruise to Salcombe, the most southerly town in Devon; arrange a fishing trip or watersports lessons from here or pick up the best of the day’s catch at the local fishmonger.

Both towns are in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as are nearby Totnes and Dartmouth. Totnes, known for its alternative and independent community (it even introduced its own currency, the Totnes pound, in 2008) is the place to pick up handmade clothing or antiques at its twice-weekly market and has more listed buildings per head of population than any other town in the UK.

In Dartmouth, take the kids on a river cruise along the Dart, have them feeling chuffed on the Dartmouth and Totnes Steam Railway or let them loose at the all-weather Woodlands Family Theme Park, one of the biggest theme parks in the UK.

There are stacks of other family attractions and days out in the area: for wildlife, the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, the award-winning Pennywell Farm, Paignton Zoo, the National Marine Aquarium and Torquay’s Living Coasts among others, or take a day trip to nearby Dartmoor for pony spotting, waterfalls, walking and more.

Nearby Buckfastleigh has an otter farm and butterfly sanctuary: after you’ve fluttered around there for a bit, take a trip to Buckfast Abbey, home of the famous Buckfast tonic wine and where Rab C Nesbitt staggered to on a pilgrimage from Glasgow.
