Lower Coombe Royal Glamping: Wood-fired hot tub

General

  • Luxury treetop lodges on a family estate just outside Kingsbridge
  • Dog-friendly Devon glamping 15 minutes' drive from South Hams beaches
  • Private wood-fired hot tub for each lodge, plus kitchen and bathroom

If you’re keen on the idea of a break where you’ll be fully immersed in nature, but you’re also rather fond of a bit of luxury… well, here’s the place for you. Stay at Lower Coombe Royal Glamping in Devon’s stunning South Hams and you’ll be spending your time in a treetop safari lodge, each of which has been cleverly positioned to provide fabulous views into the surrounding canopy and to the valley beyond.

These well-placed lodges are part of a private eight-acre estate made up of mature gardens and woods – it’s a real haven of peace and quiet, and yet only about a 10-minute walk from Kingsbridge (handy indeed for shops, pubs, restaurants and public transport).

The estate has been home to Julie, Paul and their family (plus some ducks, a flock of chickens, a cat and a cockerel named Terence) since 2017, and with their glamping site they’ve tried their best to provide everything you might need for an excellent family holiday.

If you’re bringing the kids, their attention may well be grabbed by the large trampoline, the football goals, the ping pong table and the play area with swings and a giant slide (and there are also books and toys to borrow on request).

Grownup guests, meanwhile, may well find they're more wowed by the facilities in the lodges – each one sleeps up to six (in a kingsize room, a kingsize cabin bed and a bunk room) with fancy Egyptian cotton bed linen and 13.5-tog feather duvets, and has a woodburner for warmth and cosiness. A fully equipped kitchen (with a welcome hamper of local goodies) and bathroom complete the indoor setup – but surely the highlight lies outside, where the private deck has a gas barbecue and a wood-fired hot tub…

Local attractions

It may seem like a bit of a wrench to leave your lovely little hideaway – but it’s worth doing, as the South Hams is an absolutely stunning area to explore. The coastline here is packed with sandy beaches, quiet coves and spectacular walks on the South West Coast Path. South Milton Sands, Bantham beach and the lovely town of Salcombe are all about 15 minutes’ drive away.

Salcombe can also be accessed via ferry down the estuary from Kingsbridge, but that’s not the only way to get out on the water here, as the area’s full of places to surf, launch canoes or paddleboards or go wild swimming.

While the coast is the main draw for many guests, it’s worth also looking inland for walks in the Dartmoor National Park or rides on the South Devon Railway (both half an hour’s drive) or assorted antics at Woodlands Family Theme Park (20 minutes).
