Treetops Camping: Camping pitch

General

  • Simple Devon site in an elevated location with far-reaching views
  • A mile and a half from beaches and Ilfracombe town centre
  • Dog-friendly camping with direct access to Exmoor National Park

Treetops Camping is a small family-run site hidden away in the hills to the south of Ilfracombe, north Devon. This simple site is the place to go for no-frills camping on flat pitches, where there’s access to basic but clean portable toilets and showers and a fresh water tap.

While the facilities here are low-key, the views are another story. This high-up site is in an elevated position on the edge of Exmoor National Park, meaning it has extensive vistas over the countryside and down towards the Bristol Channel; South Wales and the Brecon Beacons can also be spotted on clear days.

All of this is a mile and a half from the attractive seaside town of Ilfracombe, a pleasant coastal spot with beaches, shops, restaurants and access to the stunning scenery of the South West Coast Path.

Slightly (but not much) further afield, you could head up to the top of Great Hangman hill (15 minutes' drive) to watch the sun setting in the west, take the kids to visit the dinosaurs at Combe Martin (15 minutes) or wend your way towards Woolacombe beach (15 minutes), an immensely popular three-mile stretch of golden sand.

Another option is simply sticking around at Treetops Camping, where one of the site’s firepits and an armful of logs are all you’ll need for a relaxed evening around a roaring fire.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Single-sex bookings of 7 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Units longer than 6 metres are not allowed.

At least one of the party members must be aged 23 or over.

Units heavier than 4000 kg are not allowed.

No electric barbecues allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Touring caravans, motorhomes and campervans with the door built on the left-hand side are not permitted.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Great central location, peaceful area with great surroundings, great owner and you even get a little log basket with a firefighter and marshmallows to use on the communal fire pit.

The toilets and showers were in a portaloo but the shower was 10/10 the best shower we had used for the week (we travelled for 7 days)

Overall a great site for a real wild style camping :-)

    Disliked:

Not that we didn’t dislike this but for future it would be good to have better signage from the road as we missed the turning a couple of times :-)

From the manager...

Thank you Reece for your great review. We agree we need better signage and it is something we will be addressing as we move forward with our improvements. Rich is chuffed you loved his shower, it is deceiving to look at but in fact is better than the one in our house :-). Sad I was working and missed meeting you but hopefully you will return another time.

The owners were so welcoming bringing us a fire wood basket inclusive of marshmallows and dog drinks and cold beers.
We stayed in the secret garden and the view was stunning, even better at night with all of the stars.
The fire pit is such a lovely touch, met some lovely people there and again, a beautiful view.
The shower was pretty amazing also, really powerful! Just what was needed after a day on the beach. Both the shower and toilets were kept very clean.
A perfect little escape from the rest of the world!

Cozy discrete environment. Amenities are basic although the shower is deceptively good! The fire pit in the woods up the fairy path was eagerly sought after and we spent a couple of nights around it with the kids chanting and clapping.

There's a big Tesco just a mile down the road, so stocking up is very easy.

The Valley of the Rocks is not far away in Lynton and well worth a visit.

    Disliked:

The only downside of this site is there is no pedestrian access to the camp. It would be very unsafe walking along the roadway and there are no footpaths from the site. You need to take a short drive to various locations from the campsite.

From the manager...

We loved the pitch allocated to us - it’s quite a bit of exercise with the amount of equipment we brought to walk to and fro from the parking area to the pitch but the seclusion and view was definitely worth it. We think we got the best pitch!
Lovely little touches around the fire pits on the campsite - our daughter loved exploring and having a basket of logs with toasting marshmallows thrown in to each pitch is great.
Our daughter also liked trying out the basketball hoop- she managed to get a few in!
The toilets and showers were all clean.
We loved how basic the campsite is and unspoilt but looking forward to when the shower block is there to return - although hopefully that won’t spoil the lovely character of the campsite.

    Disliked:

The only slight problem we had was that unfortunately during the weekend the shower was out of action - only for a day so it didn’t matter too much, when we got back from being out for the day it had been fixed so we could shower at the end of the day - it was a lovely shower although we look forward to returning when a shower block is planned - washing up should be a bit easier then too.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback, we also look forward to welcoming you back to see how we have progressed and to practiced a few more basketball shots.
