Treetops Camping is a small family-run site hidden away in the hills to the south of Ilfracombe, north Devon. This simple site is the place to go for no-frills camping on flat pitches, where there’s access to basic but clean portable toilets and showers and a fresh water tap. While the facilities here are low-key, the views are another story. This high-up site is in an elevated position on the edge of Exmoor National Park, meaning it has extensive vistas over the countryside and down towards the Bristol Channel; South Wales and the Brecon Beacons can also be spotted on clear days. All of this is a mile and a half from the attractive seaside town of Ilfracombe, a pleasant coastal spot with beaches, shops, restaurants and access to the stunning scenery of the South West Coast Path. Slightly (but not much) further afield, you could head up to the top of Great Hangman hill (15 minutes' drive) to watch the sun setting in the west, take the kids to visit the dinosaurs at Combe Martin (15 minutes) or wend your way towards Woolacombe beach (15 minutes), an immensely popular three-mile stretch of golden sand. Another option is simply sticking around at Treetops Camping, where one of the site’s firepits and an armful of logs are all you’ll need for a relaxed evening around a roaring fire.
