  • Rural site on the border between Devon and Cornwall
  • Smallholding with farm animals
  • One and a half-acre coarse fishing lake: land carp of up to 22lb
Blagdon Farm is a peaceful spot on the Devon-Cornwall border, with extra-large pitches in a rural location that’s both quiet (away from busy roads) and dark by night, with little light pollution. It’s part of a smallholding with rare and local livestock breeds, and there’s also plenty of local wildlife to spot around the farm, from barn owls to hares and deer. Also on site is a 1.5-acre fishing lake stocked with carp (common, mirror, grass and crucian up to 28lb) rudd, roach, bream and tench. Experienced anglers are welcome. The lake is carefully managed to avoid overfishing, and the site fishing rules must be followed. This is a small family-run site with staff who are happy to lend a hand or advise on local places to visit. Days out to consider might take you off to the beaches of north Cornwall (including Bude), or over to the wilds of Dartmoor are equidistant – either way it’s a drive of roughly half an hour. For food and other practical bits, it’s two miles to the local community shop/post office and several decent pubs. A little further away to the north (10 minutes’ drive) is the market town of Holsworthy, which has takeaways, cafés, supermarkets and a market in the square on Wednesdays. 20 minutes to the south is Launceston, which has more shops and places to eat. If you don’t fancy either trip, supermarkets also happily deliver here (even to tents if you’re feeling particularly lazy), as do some takeaways.

Local attractions

More angling, a wealth of beaches, watersports galore and the hikes and hacks of Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor are all within easy driving distance of the farm, along with wanders along the Tamar, Taw, Torridge and Carey rivers, pedals along the Tarka Trail and the Granite Way, rides on steam railways, a good clutch of National Trust properties and historic houses, and family days out to keep small sorts amused for weeks. Surf's up at Widemouth Bay and Bude (both 30 minutes' drive) as well as at Westward Ho! and Northam, each 50 minutes away; inland, there's dinghy sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and heaps more at nearby Roadford Reservoir (15 minutes) and Tamar Lakes (30 minutes). Dartmoor National Park and the famed RHS Rosemoor gardens are each about 40 minutes away. Steam railway fans will be chuffed with the handiness of the Launceston Steam Railway (20 minutes' drive), and the two lines of the South Devon Railway at Buckfastleigh and Paignton within an hour and 20 minutes.
