  • Rural site close to the border between Devon and Cornwall
  • Heated indoor pool, games room and licensed bar with large balcony
  • 1.5-acre coarse fishing lake: land carp of up to 16lb

Bag a coarse fishing stay at Blagdon Farm, where rudd, roach, tench, orfe and carp of all types await in an acre and a half of lake among green Devon countryside.

The team here is properly proud of the site's fishing lake, which is kept well stocked and carefully maintained to avoid overfishing. (Carp of up to 16lb have been landed here, so bring your rod and licence if you want to have a go.) Nearby, you can cast off for specimens at dozens more local coarse fishing locations, or sort some sea angling from Clovelly, Boscastle, Bude and Padstow.

Plenty more is afoot in the region if you're not into angling: the farm's rural Devon setting a mile and a half from the village of Ashwater is close to the border between Devon and Cornwall, within easy reach of the beaches of the north Cornwall coast and Dartmoor National Park as well as steam railways, paths like the Tarka Trail, and more towns, museums, art galleries and cream tea spots than you can shake a fishing rod at.

Away from the fishing lake, Blagdon Farm guests can have a splash in the indoor heated pool open in high season, do a different type of Devon surfing using the free wifi, or use the provided kit for badminton, cricket, swingball and boules on the playing field with football goal.

For indoor times a games room is equipped with a pool table, games console, table tennis and mini table football, and the Dippers licensed bar with big balcony is open in the evenings on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Easter to November.

The swimming pool complex contains centrally heated changing rooms with accessible toilets and showers for guests' use – these are open at all hours and throughout the year, even when the pool is not in use.

Please note

The indoor swimming pool is open between 01/04 and 30/09.

Would be "super" for families and a "anglers paradise"

Will definitely be back - "Thank You"

    Absolutely nothing to dislike.

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely review!
Since taking over Blagdon Farm in September, we have worked hard to make it a friendly and welcoming place for all our guests.
We have concentrated on the coarse fishing lake this Spring to make access to the swims easier and make the site more open and fishing-friendly.
I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Blagdon Farm.

    Fishing free on lovely lakes.

Games room will be a good meeting place for older children in peak holiday times.

There is free WIFI however all 3 of our family have different network providers O2 , Virgin Media & Talk Talk not one of us could get a reception for calls or internet for the whole of our stay, Lady stated that our position on Lakeside Pitches made us the end of the line and their remote location caused problems with all providers.

We took Rock Pegs as it was hard standing however 3 of them bent beyond use when pitching our awning the hardstanding with large gravel stones makes it very hard to pitch even for experienced Caravanners like us.

Poor Toilet facilities for Lakeside pitches although near i didnt like the half glass door for privacy issues when using the toilet however the Owner is going to address this after our feedback.

Were advised to use the Disabled Toilet for our Chemical Waste we didnt as i think its very unhygenic however after our feedback this has been changed so only the official chemical waster deposit on the CL field is being used.

In my opinion the pool was very small although there is only 8 lodges , there is also a CL field and 2 lakeside pitches therefore if used by even 50% of the guests in peak periods it would be far too crowded.

Would be nice for the owners to offer a paper delivery service as most newsagents locally would provide this and would also support local businesses.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review which is very helpful for us to improve the facilities on our site. Unfortunately in this case no concerns were raised during the stay and therefore we were not given an opportunity to clarify any confusion or rectify anything that you felt was unsatisfactory.

We are particularly concerned that there are some factual inaccuracies in this review which also need to be corrected.

Unfortunately this review seems to be confusing WiFi with mobile network coverage. There is absolutely no problem with the free WiFi signal reaching the lake view pitches and therefore there shouldn't be a problem with accessing the internet at any time. Very occasionally an access point may have to be reset but no problems were reported during this stay. However, we are in rural Devon and therefore mobile signal coverage varies. Some networks are very good but others have intermittent or limited coverage. To always be sure of good network coverage you need to be near a town or city but most of our guests come to us because they enjoy the beautiful Devon countryside, fantastic views and rural environment. If mobile coverage is important then we are always very happy to advise people of which networks work well in this location at the time of booking.

Dozens of guests have stayed on the lake view pitches with awnings and nobody else has ever reported any problems with rock pegs being bent on the gravel. We do keep a supply of pegs here so this really would not have been a problem had we been informed about it at the time.

Our lake view pitches have electric hook up, individual water connection and grey waste. Within a few yards there are both disabled and standard toilets and we understand that the main concern was that a pane of frosted glass on each toilet door did not provide absolute privacy. Although nobody else has ever mentioned this as a concern, in June as a result of this feedback we obscured the glass further. To make it as easy as possible for our guests we gave people the option of using one of the toilets to empty their chemical waste to save walking to the main emptying point which is approximately 100 metres away. We always ask people to leave the toilets clean and tidy and we check the toilets twice a day to ensure that they are kept spotlessly clean.

The indoor heated swimming pool measures 9m x 4.6m which for a small site like ours, with only 8 lodges and a small CL, is a fantastic facility. Daily use varies (today, for example, nobody has been swimming). It can get busy during school holidays but we generally find that guests are considerate of other people and organise their time so that everyone can enjoy the facility which is, after all, a rare thing to find on a CL. We should also highlight that use of the swimming pool and coarse fishing on the lake is free of charge for our caravan site guests and represents great value for a family of four who may be paying as little as £16 per night including electric hook up, awning and dogs.

In regard to newspaper delivery the nearest newsagents are at the village post offices in Ashwater and in St. Giles on the Heath. Unfortunately neither is able to provide a delivery service. However, given that we offer free WiFi - news is only a screen tap away twenty four hours a day.

We consider all feedback very seriously and take action if we think we can improve what we offer. We hope that our guests see this demonstrated and understand that it is our aim to ensure that all our guests have a happy holiday at Blagdon Farm.
