  • Well-maintained Devon field with direct access to the Tarka Trail
  • RHS Garden Rosemoor 10 minutes' drive; Westward Ho! 30 minutes
  • On-site café and secure bike storage
Order yourself a fix of Devonshire rambling with a side of West Country views at the Yarde Orchard Café, a well-maintained wild-style site with direct access to the Tarka Trail. As if heading out into the countryside along one of the UK's best off-road routes wasn't enough, this site is within half an hour's drive of the gorgeous north Devon coast and close to bustling market towns like Great Torrington (five minutes' drive) and Bideford (15 minutes). While there's no vehicle access to the Yarde Orchard Café, it's adjacent to a free public car park with plenty of space, and trolleys are provided by the site to help you get your kit to where it needs to be. Once settled in, you have facilities like picnic benches, toilets and hot showers to make use of, as well as the on-site café's breakfast and evening meal options to explore (order in advance for these). This small-scale site, which is located in a quiet location close to the A386 and the village of Peters Marland, is within very easy reach of all the shops, pubs and other amenities in Great Torrington. Barbecues are permitted on site as long as none of the hot stuff touches the grass.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Welcoming hosts, basic but clean facilities, lovely little cafe, peaceful ( we did have the little field to ourselves tho). Use of little trolley to lug all out stuff down. 4 newbie girls don't travel light !!!! Lessons learnt

Disliked: The pitholes in the field do need attention. Easy to twist your ankle. The bridge is slippery when wet and only one handrail.

Local attractions

The Yarde Orchard Café has access to both the north and south coasts of Devon, so whether you're after surf and sand at Westward Ho! (30 minutes' drive) or a visit to the western end of the Jurassic Coast (roughly an hour) you won't find it hard to organise a fab day out at the beach. Cornwall's coast is also doable for the day, with Bude's beaches and saltwater lido around 40 minutes away by road. Turning inland, the Tarka Trail beckons with its miles of wild scenery, as does nearby RHS Garden Rosemoor (10 minutes), home to a dazzling array of plants in an expansive 100-acre setting. Castle Drogo (50 minutes) over on the edge of Dartmoor is also well worth a visit for its mock medieval turrets, croquet lawns and elegantly landscaped grounds. If any of the above is somewhat over the little ones' heads, take them to family-friendly Devon attractions like The Big Sheep adventure park (30 minutes), or to the Bideford Railway Heritage Centre (20 minutes) for steam trains and snacks followed by a run-around at Chudleigh Fort next door.
