General

  • Rural family-run campsite over 23 acres
  • In the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve
  • Pool, sun terrace, putting green and bar with verandah

The site is located in north Devon in the grounds of a seventeenth century manor house. Part open and part woodland, it is in its own cloistered valley and with direct access to the walking and pedalling meanders of the Tarka Trail.

Smythan Manor is a rural and family-run campsite over 23 acres with a lot of wildlife and ponds to wander around, all part of the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

An outdoor solar-heated pool with sun terrace is on site to swim or bask in the sun upon. There's also a putting green and a bar with a verandah from which to watch the Devon sun set.

There's plenty of room for running about and play games (if you’ve forgotten a football/cricket kit at home for evening games, ask at the site reception and they’ll see you sorted). A small play area is on site for children, next to the indoor games room with air hockey and foosball tables, table tennis and pool (another pool table, for the adults only, is available in the bar).

Guests have access to the heated amenities block with free hot water, baby changing area, easy-access facilities, a small shop, freezer for ice blocks, dishwashing area and a launderette with coin-operated washing machines and tumble dryers alongside ironing facilities. Dogs are welcome on site on all pitches apart from the camping pods.

Smytham Manor is just a mile from the gardens at RHS Rosemoor and an accessible drive from the wilds of both Dartmoor and Exmoor. A day at the north Devon coast, including the beaches of Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands and Croyde Bay, is around nine to 15 miles from the site.

Great site. All you require is clean facilities which were fabulous. The kids used the pool once weather permitting. It is best to have a wet suit. We got caught short with petrol they were on hand to give us some petrol enough to get us to a station to fill up. Lots of space for the children to play. We went to the bar once reasonably priced.
Very warm welcome with detailed information provided. Thanks would come again.

The shower and toilet facilities were absolutely spotless, couldn't fault the staff who were always cleaning and available. The swimming pool was lovely and the grounds stunning as first timers we felt this site was fantastic, if we go again we will try to get the en-suite pitched saves a walk to the shower block in the middle of the night! Felt very safe out 6 year old had the time of his life.

    Disliked:

A little out of the way to go anywhere is at least a 15 minute journey. Not the sites fault but the rain left pitched very sodden more than we had expected.

wifi, clearly a problem, unusable for most of the week, and at £15 for the week it would have been better if they had unilaterally withdrawn the service until it was useable.

Local attractions

The 180 miles of the Tarka Trail is accessible from Smytham Manor. You can follow the route of Tarka the otter from the Henry Williamson book.

Hire a bike in nearby Great Torrington for the easy 11-mile pedal along the banks of the River Torridge to Bideford; if walking, head out straight from the site or catch a bus from Great Torrington to explore the four-mile trail from Weare Giffard.

More walks, bike rides, climbing, fishing and all sorts of outdoor activities are easily accessible around Smytham Manor. You can learn to surf at north Devon beaches, enjoy cantering or mountain biking around Dartmoor and Exmoor. Wildlife is rife in these parts: the North Devon Biosphere was one of the first six UNESCO biosphere sites designated in the UK and covers an area from the heights of Dartmoor and Exmoor down via the sea to Lundy Island.

Nature of a different sort can be seen at Bideford’s famed and decidedly individual The Big Sheep, voted Devon’s best large attraction for 2013—14 and one of dozens of days out in Devon suitable for the kids: take the family along also to the Milky Way Adventure Park, also in Bideford or to the clay shooting and zorb balling of Barnstaple’s Southdown Adventure Park.

Plant lovers should visit the 65 acres of RHS Rosemoor a mile from the manor and Hartland Abbey and Gardens at Bideford, a twelfth century abbey with restored woodland gardens.

Also at Bideford, the mix of formal gardens, kitchen gardens and woodland at Tapeley Park and Gardens make for a restful afternoon out; don't miss a trip to Cheristow Lavender Farm and Gnome World, home to 250 species of wild flowers/plants and over a thousand gnomes.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (1.2 miles)
  • Castle Drogo (21.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Finch Foundry (16.7 miles)
  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (16.8 miles)
