  • Rural family-run campsite over 33 acres 15 minutes from Bideford
  • In the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve
  • Pool, sun terrace, putting green and bar with verandah
Smytham Holiday Park is in north Devon in the grounds of a 17th-century manor house. Part open and part woodland, it's in its own cloistered valley with direct access to the walking and pedalling meanders of the Tarka Trail. It's also a rural and family-run campsite over 33 acres with a lot of wildlife and ponds to wander around, all part of the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. An outdoor solar-heated summer pool with sun terrace is on site for swimming or basking in the sun. There's also a putting green and a high-season bar with verandah from which to watch the Devon sunset. There's plenty of room for running about and play games (if you’ve forgotten a football/cricket kit for evening games, ask at the site reception and they’ll see you sorted). A small play area is on site too, next to the indoor games room with air hockey, table football, table tennis and pool (another pool table, for adults only, is available in the bar). Smytham Holiday Park is a mile from the gardens at RHS Rosemoor and an accessible drive from the wilds of both Dartmoor and Exmoor. A day at the north Devon coast, including the beaches of Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands and Croyde Bay, is around nine to 15 miles from the site.

Camping pod (family)

Liked: Great site. We arrived late but had the pod key waiting for us. They also left us a portable BBQ. Everything was clean and nice. I loved the walking trail leading to the lakes.

Disliked: The masonry BBQ grill didn't have any grills. We were expected to use disposable grills, which I avoid as much as possible. In the future I'll bring my own grill so I can use it instead.

Camping pod (family)

Liked: The family pod was brilliant, perfect for not wanting to pitch a tent with the British summertime weather! The facilities were excellent, clean and lots to do for the kids. The pool was a huge hit, as was the games room and football pitch, we’ll definitely be heading back soon!

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful site, excellently managed. We absolutely love this little gem of a campsite. Our pitch was lovely and level and our request to be placed as close to the disabled facilities possible was granted. We can't wait to visit again next year.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: We ended up staying for 5 nights as the facilities and staff were so good ...cleanest and best showers of any campsite we've stayed at....the swimming pool was great as were the surrounding walking trails...

Disliked: Would've been nice to be informed the campsite bar was closed for building work but didn't impact us really

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Exceptionally clean facilities, wonderful heated pool, so quiet & restful despite kids 😁... Tony & his wife are genuine gems on site as is lovely Charlotte...watch out when the bar is open ..local elderflower gin is exquisite...available in shop to buy also. Location wise works beautifully as Tarka trail is inches away, Ilfracombe,Bideford etc &Cormwall are within an hour travel. We loved it more than we'd have hoped &look forward to returning in a few weeks...

Local attractions

The 180 miles of the Tarka Trail are accessible from Smytham Holiday Park, following the route of Tarka the otter from the Henry Williamson book. Elsewhere, hire a bike in nearby Great Torrington for the easy 11-mile pedal along the banks of the Torridge river to Bideford; if walking, head out straight from the site or catch a bus from Great Torrington to explore the four-mile trail from Weare Giffard. The area is a wildlife haven: the North Devon Biosphere was one of the first six UNESCO biosphere sites designated in the UK and covers an area from the heights of Dartmoor and Exmoor down via the sea to Lundy Island. Nature of a different sort can be seen at Bideford’s famed and decidedly individual The Big Sheep and one of dozens of days out in Devon suitable for the kids: take the family along also to the Milky Way Adventure Park, also in Bideford, or to the clay shooting and zorbing of Barnstaple’s Southdown Adventure Park. Plant fans should visit the 65 acres of RHS Rosemoor, a mile from the manor, and Hartland Abbey and Gardens at Bideford, a 12th-century abbey with restored woodland gardens.
