Come to North Devon for a stay in the grounds of a 17th-century manor house. Part open and part woodland, Smytham Holiday Park is in its own cloistered valley with bicycle hire directly on site and access to the Tarka Trail. It's also a rural and family-run site with 33 acres to its name, plus lots of wildlife and ponds to wander around, all part of the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve. Two outdoor heated pools are open in high season, one with a mushroom water feature and a sun terrace. There's plenty of room for running about and playing games on site (if you’ve forgotten a football/cricket kit for evening games, ask at the site reception and they’ll see you sorted), as well as a miniature golf area. A small outdoor play area is on site too, alongside an indoor games room with air hockey, table football, table tennis, a small soft play area and a pool table. And if you fancy a cool drink, head to the family bar, which throws open its doors at peak periods (including the complete school summer holidays). Smytham Holiday Park is a mile from the gardens at RHS Rosemoor and an accessible drive from the wilds of both Dartmoor and Exmoor. A day at the north Devon coast, including the beaches of Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands and Croyde Bay, is around nine to 15 miles from the site.

Dogs

  • The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

General

  • The bar is open between 17/07 and 01/09.
  • This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

Occupancy

  • No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.
  • Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Pool

  • The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/05 and 30/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Vehicles

  • Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.
  • 8 kWh of electricity is included per stay in low season and 5 kWh of electricity is included per stay in mid and high season. Further usage is metered on site at £0.48 per kWh and is payable onsite via the app. The family bar open every night from the 22nd of May to the 31st of May and then from the 17th of July to the 2nd of September. It is also open Friday and Saturday evenings during Easter, May, June and July.

Liked Great site. All very clean and plenty of room on your pitch. Toilet / shower block great and very clean. Nice to have a swimming pool on site. Plenty to do for the kids and your right on the Tarka trail.

Liked The grounds are very well maintained , staff are very friendly and helpful , showers in new toilet block are spacious , very warm and powerful . All exceptionally clean and tidy . Warm swimming pool was a welcomed bonus . The tent Pitches are large in size . Simple onsite shop for basic needs reasonable prices . I would 100 percent recommend to anyone wanting to visit . You won’t be disappointed .

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Loved the size of the pitches and how well kept the whole site was, especially the toilet/shower block! We were even more lucky with the weather! Great trip overall, thank you Smytham!
We can’t wait to visit again some day😊

Disliked The only dislike was the WiFi coverage! Just wasn’t great for the evenings when the children were having some chill out time, but other than that.. nothing to complain about😊

Liked Great place the kids loved it, all facilities were clean! Loved the different food trucks and they were great at making sure we were all camped close together :) will be back!

Disliked Only bad thing was the chlorine in the pool must of been a bit strong as made our eyes sore! Didn’t stop us using it a couple times a day though!

Liked Good sized and condition of pitches. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Small shop on site. Toilets and showers were good and always clean. Good selection of activities. The pool was a great addition.

Disliked Only thing we think could have made our stay better was some parasols around the pool.

Local attractions

The 180 miles of the Tarka Trail are accessible from Smytham Holiday Park, following the route of Tarka the otter from the Henry Williamson book. Elsewhere, hire a bike in nearby Great Torrington for the easy 11-mile pedal along the banks of the Torridge river to Bideford; if walking, head out straight from the site or catch a bus from Great Torrington to explore the four-mile trail from Weare Giffard. The area is a wildlife haven: the North Devon Biosphere was one of the first six UNESCO biosphere sites designated in the UK and covers an area from the heights of Dartmoor and Exmoor down via the sea to Lundy Island. Nature of a different sort can be seen at Bideford’s famed and decidedly individual The Big Sheep and one of dozens of days out in Devon suitable for the kids: take the family along also to the Milky Way Adventure Park, also in Bideford, or to the clay shooting and zorbing of Barnstaple’s Southdown Adventure Park. Plant fans should visit the 65 acres of RHS Rosemoor, a mile from the manor, and Hartland Abbey and Gardens at Bideford, a 12th-century abbey with restored woodland gardens.
