Come to North Devon for a stay in the grounds of a 17th-century manor house. Part open and part woodland, Smytham Holiday Park is in its own cloistered valley with bicycle hire directly on site and access to the Tarka Trail. It's also a rural and family-run site with 33 acres to its name, plus lots of wildlife and ponds to wander around, all part of the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve. Two outdoor heated pools are open in high season, one with a mushroom water feature and a sun terrace. There's plenty of room for running about and playing games on site (if you’ve forgotten a football/cricket kit for evening games, ask at the site reception and they’ll see you sorted), as well as a miniature golf area. A small outdoor play area is on site too, alongside an indoor games room with air hockey, table football, table tennis, a small soft play area and a pool table. And if you fancy a cool drink, head to the family bar, which throws open its doors at peak periods (including the complete school summer holidays). Smytham Holiday Park is a mile from the gardens at RHS Rosemoor and an accessible drive from the wilds of both Dartmoor and Exmoor. A day at the north Devon coast, including the beaches of Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands and Croyde Bay, is around nine to 15 miles from the site.

It is also open Friday and Saturday evenings during Easter, May, June and July.

喜欢 Very clean and well kept. Pool area was great for the kids. Didn’t have to book a time slot or pay extra to use it. The overall stay was fantastic.

不喜欢 Just the one minor thing that there was only entertainment on one night over the bank hol weekend (which was very good).

喜欢 Really impressed with this site. The staff were friendly and welcoming throughout our stay, and the whole place was clean and well looked after.
The swimming pool was excellent, and the shower and washroom facilities were modern, spotless, and clearly maintained to a high standard.
There are also some really thoughtful extras, including dedicated areas for washing bikes and wetsuits, plus a separate dog washing station which is a great touch after muddy walks.
The grounds and walking areas are lovely, with plenty of open space around the pitches so you never feel cramped. Overall, a very relaxing and well-equipped place to stay.

不喜欢 A few small areas for improvement during our stay.
The clubhouse felt a little too small at busy times, and there could sometimes be quite a long wait at the bar for drinks.
It would also be great to see a play area aimed at older children and young teenagers (around 10–16 years old), as the current one seems more suited to younger kids.
The swimming pool was excellent, but the opening hours felt a bit limited. Extending the pool opening times until around 9pm instead of 6pm would make a big difference, especially during warmer evenings.

喜欢 The staff are so friendly, we were only there for a couple of nights over the Bank Holiday. The Tarka trail is perfect for young families, a fairly flat trail with a lovely lunch at the Pub. The pool was spotless and a welcome refreshment in 30 degrees. We'll be back.

The 180 miles of the Tarka Trail are accessible from Smytham Holiday Park, following the route of Tarka the otter from the Henry Williamson book. Elsewhere, hire a bike in nearby Great Torrington for the easy 11-mile pedal along the banks of the Torridge river to Bideford; if walking, head out straight from the site or catch a bus from Great Torrington to explore the four-mile trail from Weare Giffard. The area is a wildlife haven: the North Devon Biosphere was one of the first six UNESCO biosphere sites designated in the UK and covers an area from the heights of Dartmoor and Exmoor down via the sea to Lundy Island. Nature of a different sort can be seen at Bideford’s famed and decidedly individual The Big Sheep and one of dozens of days out in Devon suitable for the kids: take the family along also to the Milky Way Adventure Park, also in Bideford, or to the clay shooting and zorbing of Barnstaple’s Southdown Adventure Park. Plant fans should visit the 65 acres of RHS Rosemoor, a mile from the manor, and Hartland Abbey and Gardens at Bideford, a 12th-century abbey with restored woodland gardens.
