Come to North Devon for a stay in the grounds of a 17th-century manor house. Part open and part woodland, Smytham Holiday Park is in its own cloistered valley with bicycle hire directly on site and access to the Tarka Trail. It's also a rural and family-run site with 33 acres to its name, plus lots of wildlife and ponds to wander around, all part of the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve. Two outdoor heated pools are open in high season, one with a mushroom water feature and a sun terrace. There's plenty of room for running about and playing games on site (if you’ve forgotten a football/cricket kit for evening games, ask at the site reception and they’ll see you sorted), as well as a miniature golf area. A small outdoor play area is on site too, alongside an indoor games room with air hockey, table football, table tennis, a small soft play area and a pool table. And if you fancy a cool drink, head to the family bar, which throws open its doors at peak periods (including the complete school summer holidays). Smytham Holiday Park is a mile from the gardens at RHS Rosemoor and an accessible drive from the wilds of both Dartmoor and Exmoor. A day at the north Devon coast, including the beaches of Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands and Croyde Bay, is around nine to 15 miles from the site.

Further usage is metered on site at £0.48 per kWh and is payable onsite via the app. The family bar open every night from the 22nd of May to the 31st of May and then from the 17th of July to the 2nd of September. It is also open Friday and Saturday evenings during Easter, May, June and July.

不喜欢 I asked to extend the payment date due to external influences that prohibited me paying for it on the desired date and was promised I’d get a call back on a set date to make payment. I never received the call to make said payment and in effect lost my pitch due to this

喜欢 Friendly staff and clean facilities, access to tarka trail a bit of a climb but worth it once you get there! Good size pitch and swimming pool was great! Coffee was really good on site and the drinks reasonably priced. Good selection of food vans and the Indian we ordered off site was delivered with no problems!!

不喜欢 One of the showers we avoided (middle
shower in newer block) as it had no water pressure.
Limited Gluten free option in shop - however the main Morrison’s supermarket is about a 25 minute drive away so not the end of the world.
WiFi didn’t work on our pitch so relied on downloaded films for the evenings.

喜欢 Very friendly, clean holiday park with very good size pitches . Right on the Tarka trail (very good for bike riding). Bar small but really nice with a pool table. Showers in new block were powerfull and hot.

不喜欢 Not very good lighting when going to toilet block.
Would need transport as there wasn’t anything within walking distance.

喜欢 How peaceful the site was. Great location. Loved where we were located.Facilities couldn’t fault them. Staff all very helpful too. Pool was ideal for the kids.

不喜欢 Wouldn’t say anything we disliked, however unsure why we had to pay for an additional car as there was ample space on pitch and didn’t impact on any other neighbours

喜欢 Great campsite, quiet neighbours, epic pool, wonderful to have food trucks each evening. Location was good, we could head for Croyde or Hartland peninsular for a day tip and had Lidl just 6 minutes away in Torrington. Good coffee at reception for a reasonable price.

The 180 miles of the Tarka Trail are accessible from Smytham Holiday Park, following the route of Tarka the otter from the Henry Williamson book. Elsewhere, hire a bike in nearby Great Torrington for the easy 11-mile pedal along the banks of the Torridge river to Bideford; if walking, head out straight from the site or catch a bus from Great Torrington to explore the four-mile trail from Weare Giffard. The area is a wildlife haven: the North Devon Biosphere was one of the first six UNESCO biosphere sites designated in the UK and covers an area from the heights of Dartmoor and Exmoor down via the sea to Lundy Island. Nature of a different sort can be seen at Bideford’s famed and decidedly individual The Big Sheep and one of dozens of days out in Devon suitable for the kids: take the family along also to the Milky Way Adventure Park, also in Bideford, or to the clay shooting and zorbing of Barnstaple’s Southdown Adventure Park. Plant fans should visit the 65 acres of RHS Rosemoor, a mile from the manor, and Hartland Abbey and Gardens at Bideford, a 12th-century abbey with restored woodland gardens.
