  • Cosy adults-only woodland site in the Devon countryside
  • A 10-minute drive to Exeter or Killerton House
  • Firepit, pizza oven, hammocks, telescope and tandem hire
If you fancy spending a cosy romantic break in the pretty Devon countryside, while still being only a 10-minute drive from the historic city of Exeter and its attractions, then Yonder Meadow Holidays has got you covered. This is a place where you can easily head into the city, or simply pootle around the local area on foot or by bike (or, for something extra special, aboard one of the tandems available for hire on site). Surrounded by woodlands, the small-scale site is between the Exe and Culm rivers, on the edge of the parish of Rewe. A communal area has a firepit, a pizza oven and a double hammock where you can stretch out and stargaze. There's very little light pollution in this rural area, and the site kindly provides a telescope for spying on stars in the night sky. If you take a stroll deeper into the woodland, you'll come across additional hammocks near a pond. Or when you're craving the water, Exmouth Beach is a 40-minute drive away or it's a 10-minute walk to reach the river Exe. In the evening, you might like to relax with a good book or around the firepit. If you want to spend an evening away from base, it's about three quarters of a mile to the nearest pub, in Stoke Canon. The pub and shop in Stoke Canon are a 15-minute walk away from the site. There's also a farm shop and café 35 minutes' walk away. Communal facilities include an outdoor kitchen and a well-maintained bathroom with a toilet and a shower. Handily, the site also has a drying room for airing any damp kit. Please note that Yonder Meadow Holidays is an adults-only site; children under 18 are not admitted.

Redwood yurt

Liked: I can’t speak anymore highly of this beautiful place, we had the gorgeous yurt with a stunning little log burner inside. The attention to detail was great, we had absolutely everything and had some great little touches. The hosts were wonderful and friendly. It’s a short bus ride into Exeter, bus stop is just up the road easy to walk too. We did not knowingly upset our neighbours with some low level music which has resulted into them giving a poor review to this place, so I wanted to explain that this place is incredibly peaceful and for those put off by those reviews to listen to the positive ones because we felt so relaxed and the place is way better than advertised and exceeded our expectation. We will return.

Disliked: There isn’t anything we disliked

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The place was clean and had more facilities than I was expecting. There was a beautiful sun deck where it was so relaxing to watch the sun go down, the covered bar/cooking area was really useful and easy to use. Once cooking was done it was perfect to sit around the fire-pit and get cosy. The tent pitches themselves were private and didn't have anyone looking over you. It was idyllic.

Redwood yurt

Liked: It's a proper woodland experience. Birds, squirrels, rabbits and badgers. Each time I walked to the kitchen I had to stop and have a go on the rope swing. I felt like a child again. I'm 51!

Disliked: Coming home.

Local attractions

If you take a trip to Exeter (10 minutes’ drive), be sure to check out the city’s rather splendid medieval cathedral, with its Gothic vaults and stained-glass windows. After that, you may like to peruse the exhibits of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, learn about The House That Moved, take a tour of the city's underground passages or take a walk along the riverbank. Run by the National Trust, Killerton House (10 minutes) is an elegant 18th-century property set in over 6000 acres of land – from woods to orchards and working farmland. There’s also a landscaped garden known for its rhododendron bushes and winding paths, including one leading to a lookout point with expansive views over the Devon countryside. Over in Dartmoor National Park (half an hour), there are plenty of outdoor activities to get stuck into – from hiking and mountain biking to climbing – in a dramatic landscape featuring heathlands, deep valleys and rocky outcrops. This is also the place for wildlife spotting, with resident animals including otters, cuckoos and several species of bats.
