  • Dog-friendly Devon wildlife haven with peaceful woodlands
  • A 15-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park; 20 minutes from Exeter
  • Small campfires permitted and firewood available at a small cost
If you’ve been pining for a wildlife retreat, set your sights on a stay at Little Harford, surrounded by seven acres of woodland in a peaceful valley in Devon. With mature trees all around and a small river at the bottom, this is the kind of site where you'll want to pack your binoculars to spy on the site’s passing buzzards, owls, squirrels, pheasants, foxes, deer and wild birds. This is almost-wild camping with no electricity, wifi or phone signal, and facilities are kept minimal for a splendid back-to-nature stay. There’s a compost toilet but no shower on site – and across the road there’s a tap in the property’s yard to tend to water bottles in need of a top-up. You'll need a good-quality torch for evening manoeuvres though. When you arrive, dump your kit in a wheelbarrow to climb the hillside to the pitches (a good level of fitness is required). Later, prep your goodies for a small campfire, as they're permitted on site (firewood is available at a small cost). The area is kept as wild as possible, meaning just the paths and pitches are mowed, and pitches are kept to a small number to keep things pretty and peaceful. As there’s no rubbish collection, guests take it with them at the end of their stay to protect the wildlife. Don’t feel like you’re completely cut off here though, as the site is under 10 minutes’ drive from the A30 (reach the centre of Exeter 20 minutes’ drive away and the edge of Dartmoor National Park in 15 minutes). A five-minute drive away, there's also Tedburn St Mary, a village with a small food shop and two pubs for tasty eats.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely site stretching down through a little wood to a meadow beside a river. Nice and basic (but work clearly ongoing), lending itself well to the 'wild camping' feel. Owner was great to deal with and very accommodating. It's March now and the weather is sketchy but looking forward to coming back and seeing it in spring/summer. Saw a kingfisher shooting down the river in the morning, which was a highlight!

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Idyllic wild camping in a woodland glade. Very quiet (we had the whole site to ourselves for most of our stay!) Dog friendly (and secure for our sighthound to roam freely) and campfires allowed. Rachel is a great host who has lots of exciting plans for the future. Really loved our stay!

Disliked: I didn't realise that there isn't a shower (that's me not reading the blurb properly!) it didn't bother us, but worth noting if you consider it vital! Personally I'd trade the solitude for a shower any day of the week. Rachel does have plans to install one in the near future though.

From the manager: It was lovely to meet you and you are welcome back anytime! I do have some portable solar showers now but I realise it’s all a bit too late for you. I hope to get the shower sorted out and water down there in the near future!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Really lovely campsite, nice and quiet and peaceful with lots of birds to watch. Rachel the owner is so lovely and welcoming! Highly recommend if quiet, fairly secluded and natural is what you look for in a campsite.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike here, maybe the compost toilet is something other campers could be better informed about how to use, so as not to block it!

Local attractions

If you’ve already conquered the local woodland walks and bridleways, Dartmoor National Park has plenty more trails to tackle. The National Trust’s Fingle Bridge (20 minutes’ drive) has peaceful woodland walks along the river Teign. For a steeper climb, Belstone Tor (25 minutes) passes a Stone Age circle to a scenic viewpoint. A little deeper into the national park, Chagford (25 minutes) is a stannary town with traditional thatched roofs, and Fernworthy Reservoir (35 minutes) has nature trails, picnic areas and fly fishing. While there are plenty of adventures inland, the coast also has its own playground, whether you prefer a traditional seaside or resort or the smaller coves of Sidmouth (45 minutes). If you want the former, perhaps head to the lido, beach and pier at Teignmouth beach (35 minutes) or the watersports centre at Exmouth beach (40 minutes), which also has a long sandy stretch and rockpools to rummage through.
