General

  • Rural site in east Devon overlooking fields and trees
  • A five-minute drive from the attractions of Crealy Adventure Park
  • Within 20 minutes of Exmouth beach and the South West Coast Path

Got a head for heights? A thing for thrills or a raging passion for rollercoasters? Happy times await at Hill Pond Caravan and Camping Park, which is five minutes’ drive away from the rides, slides and animal attractions of Crealy Adventure Park.

With one of Devon’s top family destinations so handy, you’ll have lots to fill your days, from hurtling about at great height to hanging with the crocodiles and meerkats. When you’re hoarse from all the high decibel excitements of the adventure park, it’s a 20-minute drive to the peace of Exmouth beach or the stillness of Exeter’s Gothic cathedral and eerie underground tunnels.

Back on this green and well-maintained site, there’s lots of space for stretching out and soaking up the rural views. If you feel that soaking should include a spot of supper, stock up in the shops of nearby Clyst St Mary (five minutes’ drive) and have yourselves a barbecue. There are pubs with food there too, if turning your own sausages is too much effort….

The toilets, showers etc nice.26/01/2020

    The toilets, showers etc nice.

    Disliked:

The most awful place ever. It's nothing more than a scrap yard with permanent living. rubbish everywhere, scrap cars and caravans. awning and vans were green from never being washed or moved. Derelict bungalow as you drive in. Never saw the owner/manager. Nowhere to put rubbish. Kept it in the car until we came home...left after 2 nights. Our "neighbour" played tv/radio so loud until late at night and from early morning that we had hardy any sleep. Car radios and slamming door from 5.30am. Need I say anymore?

From the manager...

Thank-you for your feedback and we are sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. Also I am sorry about any loud noise from joining caravans but unless I am told about it I am unable to have a word with them.
However I feel I need to correct you on several other details. There are no scap cars on the campsite, they are all working and used by the people that own them.
There are only 2 caravans that need to be scraped and they were supposed to be collected by someone about a month ago but they did not turn up. All the other caravans belong to clients and are used by them as they require. The green on the caravans and awnings is due to the fact we have had a very wet Autumn and Winter in this part of the country with very few dry days but they will be all washed in the spring as they were last summer.
The derelict bungalow and fields either side of the drive do not belong to us. The company that owns the bungalow is due to demolish it and rebuild sometime this year.
I did explain to you where the big rubbish bin was but you could have left your rubbish next to the bin in the kitchen washing up area for me to dispose off.
I am at the campsite every day but people staying are quite often offsite at the time and presume I have not been around.
Finally we are next to a business park that has expanded around us over the years and we have no control of any car radios and/or car doors making a noise unfortunately.

Lovely friendly owner, the reception was closed when we arrived but his number was on the door and he answered it straight away and came up the field to greet me, it was cold at night so it was lovely to find warm and clean toilets and showers, even with lovely smelling hand wash and some ladies hygiene products on the counter if anyone had forgotten them, decent (and free) hairdryers in the toilets too! There was a washing up area, fridge with freezer and launderette but we didn’t use these but they were also kept clean and tidy. Handy location not being down long windy country lanes, very easy to find. Lovely having drinking water taps right by the electric hook up.

Will definitely book again, thank you!

    Disliked:

Noisy neighbours in the tent next door especially on the Saturday night, rest of the park was lovely and peaceful. The lane to the campsite could do with a few potholes filling in and levelling out though.

Local attractions

If you’re after coastal walks, Exmouth makes a good point to join up with the South West Coast Path: take it all the way round to Poole if you’ve got the time and energy, or do shorter, more digestible day trip sections, such as round to the mouth of the River Otter at Budleigh Salterton (25 minutes by car).

For a wilder kind of landscape, climb the moss-covered Haytor Rocks (30 minutes), with views right across Dartmoor, or make the 50-minute trip to Berry Head National Nature Reserve, where a working lighthouse crowns a promontory full of guillemots and peregrine falcons, white rock roses and orchids, with harbour porpoises often spottable out at sea.

If you like your creatures more exotic, Paignton Zoo (40 minutes) obliges with elephants, orangutans, red ruffed lemurs and a Jungle Express train to visit them, while those in search of Devon’s extinct wildlife will love a tour of the fossil museum in Lyme Regis, especially if they top it off with some fossil hunting of their own on Charmouth beach (both 45 minutes).

In among all that tooth and claw, make time for Torquay, (40 minutes) where you can take spins on the English Riviera Wheel, tour the 12th-century abbey and its gardens and go back further in time in the prehistoric cave network of Kents Cavern.
