Pitches

General

  • Smart family-run park within Woodbury Common
  • Easy drive into Exeter
  • Excellent facilities including bar, bistro and play area

They say an Englishman’s (motor)home is his castle – so when choosing where to brake, you’ll want a spot fit for a king. Castle Brake Holiday Park in east Devon should pass muster: it’s a smart, family-run park within the heathland of Woodbury Common, ideally placed for an invasion of Exeter and the sought-after sands of the Jurassic Coast.

The facilities are splendid: a spotless, cedar-clad amenities block with underfloor heating and family bathrooms; a laundry room; the Castle Inn bar and restaurant for homemade nosh using local ingredients (takeaways are also available); a new play area added in 2018; and ample space for a peaceful stroll and a bit of wildlife spotting. (Please note that the bar and restaurant is not open every evening during low season.)

Castle Brake Holiday Park is within walking distance of the village of Woodbury, which has a handful of good pubs and shops, or it’s an easy ride into Exeter for anything else you might need.

Nicely landscaped site and very friendly and helpful staff. Option to use the sister site for free. The toilets and basins were spotless. The taps were motion sensored and set at a constant temperature so there was no need to touch them. There was even a cold only tap and basin for cleaning your teeth. The shower cubicle was very generous in size with the dressing area sectioned off from the shower area. It had hooks, a stool, a heavy duty slip mat and a good size shelf in the shower to put all your bits. They also had family bathrooms with a shower and bath which would be fantastic for families with small children. Although we didn’t use it, the on-site restaurant and bar looked nice.

    Disliked:

We had trouble finding the site. The website does advise not to follow the Sat Nav if you have a caravan or large motor home, but as our MH wasn’t huge, we assumed it would be ok. We were wrong. It takes you down very narrow roads with grass growing in the middle. We’d hired a Fiat 500 as well and that was as big a vehicle you’d want to be in for some of the roads. In short, don’t follow the Sat Nav whatever you are driving. There wasn’t a lot of lighting around the pitches so, after dark, you definitely need a torch.

Not a lot. The toilets and showers were clean.

    Disliked:

Rude, abrupt reception staff who threatened to not allow us to stay as we couldn’t produce an email, which we had never received. The woodland walk was a joke, thick mud, sheer climbs and paths overgrown with brambles. The takeaway menu was expensive and basic. The pitches were very close together and overlooked. We didn’t try the restaurant/ cafe due to the rude reception we’d received. Also plan ahead if you want the toilet as it was miles away from our caravan pitch. It is a very large site and it had only one toilet block and chemical disposal point.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. I am sorry you felt our reception team were rude, we pride ourselves on our customer service and try to help all of our guests, with the current situation we send all of our confirmation details by email and it states to have your reference number with you on arrival so we can ensure the correct people are checking in for the track and trace system. We are trying to keep the park open as safely as possible by limiting numbers into the bar and offering a small takeaway service, i am sorry you felt this was basic and expensive. All of our pitches are spaced out in accordance with regulations, pitches do vary in size and are allocated to customers based on the size of their tent/tourer or motorhome. We have one large toilet and shower block and a second toilet facility next to the reception area. We have seasonal pitches who use their own facilities on board and our shower block is always available for use. I am very sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us. Kind regards Castle Brake Holiday Park

Everything! This site has, by far, the cleanest toilet /shower block we have ever stayed at.

The food at the bar/restaurant was fantastic - definitely recommend the steak, and the bbq chicken wings, and the chilli, and.....basically, the whole menu!

The playpark area was great, well used by all the kids on site. And the woodland walk is a lovely feature too.

And finally, the staff are great, really friendly, welcoming and helpful.

Totally recommend this site for anybody wanting to explore the area - it's so close to a multitude of great beaches (Exmouth was our fave), not far from Exeter, with lots to do for all ages
