Castle Brake Holiday Park: The camping field

General

  • Smart family-run park within Woodbury Common
  • Easy drive into Exeter
  • Excellent facilities including bar, bistro and play area

They say an Englishman’s (motor)home is his castle – so when choosing where to brake, you’ll want a spot fit for a king. Castle Brake Holiday Park in east Devon should pass muster: it’s a smart, family-run park within the heathland of Woodbury Common, ideally placed for an invasion of Exeter and the sought-after sands of the Jurassic Coast.

The facilities are splendid: a spotless, cedar-clad amenities block with underfloor heating and family bathrooms; a laundry room; the Castle Inn bar and restaurant for homemade nosh using local ingredients (takeaways are also available); a new play area added in 2018; and ample space for a peaceful stroll and a bit of wildlife spotting. (Please note that the bar and restaurant is not open every evening during low season.)

Castle Brake Holiday Park is within walking distance of the village of Woodbury, which has a handful of good pubs and shops, or it’s an easy ride into Exeter for anything else you might need.

Very well-kept site. We stayed on a hardstanding pitch which was of a good size and was equipped with a picnic table. Although we used our own shower and toilets in the motorhome I popped in to the shower block to wash my hands and discovered excellent facilities! Tony, the owner, was very friendly and had time for a chat. We stayed at Castle Brake because it was close and had access to the Tarka Trail (cycling/walking route). Would definitely stay at Castle Brake again if we are down this way and highly recommend it.

I liked the member of reception who greeted us even though we were later than estimated, I liked the pitch we were allocated. It was quiet and didn't need ramps for levelling.

    Disliked:

I was disappointed with the rusty shower tray, maybe needs replacing and the shower was cold I ended up swapping showers due to this. But other than those two minor issues, I would stay again

Lots to see and do within easy drives. Good walks nearby. Facilities good at site. Friendly, helpful staff. Water next to pitch. Bar/restaurant on site. Didn't realise electricity was included so we had access to that. Food in restaurant was excellent.

    Disliked:

One night there was a rave some distance away. Although this had nothing to do with Castle Brake, it was nevertheless awful as it didn't stop till around 8am in the morning. Restaurant had to be booked as was usually full. Had to pay for wi-fi.

Or try the World of Country Life, which has a petting zoo, indoor and outdoor rides and slides, vintage steam engines, museums and events as eclectic as welly wanging and the six nations ferret races...
