  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area
Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell. As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can stroll next door to the farm shop to select goodies for your dinner. There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course… but not before kicking back for a bit on site… Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre. All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude. Eco-friendly drivers can charge their electric vehicles using the EV point on site too.

What customers say

This adults-only campsite is highly praised for its immaculate cleanliness, modern facilities, and spacious pitches. Visitors consistently highlight the friendly and helpful owners, the peaceful atmosphere, and the excellent dog exercise area. Its convenient location near the A30 and local attractions is also a significant plus. Minor points raised include occasional road noise and the distance to some amenities, though these are generally considered minor drawbacks that do not detract from the overall positive experience.

Liked Barley Meadow is a small, well resourced site and the staff Leigh and David are very friendly and helpful. It is very conveniently located in close proximity to the places we wanted to visit around Exeter. We would definitely make this site our first choice if visiting the area again.

From the manager: Many thanks Mandy for your kind review. With regards to the gateway it is only for our guests to use and not the general public. This stops people having to walk along the road to get to the farm shop. However we are pleased you enjoyed your stay. Best wishes from Leigh and David

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Everything.
Leigh and David were very friendly and helpful even before our arrival.

Was given a pitch that gave an easier route for my partners electric wheelchair to get to the toilet block.

Shop was well priced with a good selection of camping/caravanning items you may have forgotten or need in an emergency.

Our dog loved the secured dog run.

Convenient short cut path to the farmshop.

There is some occasional noise from the old A30. But nowhere near the amount of some dramatic reviews. The site is on the edge of Dartmoor so you will need to travel

The site is well kept and clean with excellent modern facilities. Loved the showers. There is a "Bothy" which has a well stocked library, pool table a fridge freezer and a cupboard with charging cables.

Will absolutely be back again

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked We had a fantastic stay at this campsite! The whole site is exceptionally well maintained, with spotless toilets and shower facilities that were always clean. Being an adults-only site made for a lovely peaceful atmosphere, and everyone we met was friendly, welcoming, and helpful.

The enclosed dog field was a great addition. It's not huge, but it was perfect for letting our dog have a run off the lead. My only small suggestion would be to have a one-dog-at-a-time rule, as my dog is a little shy and won't go to the toilet if another dog is watching!

The campsite is in a good central location for exploring the area, although the walking spots we wanted to visit in Devon were around a 30–40 minute drive away. We had a camping fridge, so food wasn't a problem, but if you do need anything, there is a reasonably priced farm shop nearby and the on-site shop stocks the essentials. It would be even better if there were food vans on Friday and Saturday evenings, as that would be a lovely extra after a day out exploring.

This was only our second camping trip, and it couldn't have gone much better. We really enjoyed our stay and would happily recommend this campsite to anyone looking for a peaceful, immaculately kept place to relax and unwind. While we probably wouldn't stay again, that's only because we realised we'd prefer to be closer to the specific areas of Devon we wanted to explore. That's purely down to our own plans and not a reflection of the campsite, which was excellent.

Disliked The only minor inconvenience for us was that we had to drive everywhere we wanted to visit, as there aren't many dog walks that can be accessed directly from the campsite. This was more to do with our itinerary than the campsite itself.

The on-site shop is handy for basic essentials, although it would be even better if it stocked a few more everyday items such as butter and cooking oil for campers who run out during their stay.

From the manager: Many thanks for your review.
Firstly with regards to walks: We do have lots of walks which are directly from the campsite, but they are on lanes and as we are in Devon it is very hilly. You are sent detailed walks and maps of all the walks. This information is sent to you 3 days prior to your arrival.
With regards to our small onsite shop: We do not stock butter or meats as we are very lucky to have the farm shop with is less than a minutes walk down the track from the campsite. We do stock cooking oil and lots of other essentials for our guests.
With regards to food vans: Sadly we would need to sell a minimum of 60 pizzas a night for it to be worth the pizza van being here and sadly we just would not be able to do this. We do 4 wonderful local pubs within a 5 mile radius of us which are all dog friendly.
With regards to the dog park: As there are only two of us who work 7 days a week we cannot manage who uses the dog park and when. This is purely common sense and courtesy to ask if your dog is friendly and do you mind if we come in. As this is an adults only site I'm sure that people do not need us to arrange this for them.
I am confused as to why you have put in your review that you would recommend us to friends but you have crossed this out?
However we are pleased that you did enjoy your stay with us. Best wishes from Leigh and David

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool. There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges. History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive. Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
