  • Dog-friendly caravan with a peaceful and private outdoor space
  • A 25-minute drive to Exmoor National Park; 45 minutes to the coast
  • Indoor play barn with a trampoline, snooker table and outdoor slides
At The Big Hoot Caravan, you might just have a hoot of a time unwinding in your private caravan, surrounded by wildflower meadows and stunning views of the Devon countryside. This Mid Devon site is home to a Showman’s living van in a peaceful, remote spot with plenty of private outdoor space. There’s gated access to the caravan and an indoor play barn with a trampoline, a snooker table and outdoor slides… But this site also wins big brownie points for its central location, 25 minutes’ drive from Exmoor National Park and 45 minutes’ drive from Devon’s south coast and the Dartmoor National Park. The farm’s 1970s vintage caravan has been renovated and comfortably sleeps a family of four. There’s a large double bedroom and two single bedrooms separated by a sliding door, as well as comfy seating in the lounge, a fully-functioning, 70s-inspired kitchen and a breakfast bar by the window for morning cereal with a view. There’s plenty of space outdoors to take in the views too and a firepit and gas barbecue with outdoor seating for alfresco evenings. Kids can let off steam on the outdoor slides and large indoor play barn, which has a trampoline, snooker table, darts, basketball, playhouses and ride-on toys. Try the owners’ suggested walks around the farm too and meet the two billy goats, Kevin and Alfie. For foodies, Tiverton (10 minutes’ drive) has independent shops, a pannier market and a monthly food market. There are plenty of pretty local villages with food festivals, pubs and historic sites too.

2 bedroom static caravan

Liked: The caravan was immaculate with so much space. The weather was beautiful. The views from where we stayed were amazing and it was lovely that our hosts offered to visit the local farm shop for us as our arrival was very late. The games in the barn were great and kept the children thoroughly entertained.

Disliked: There was nothing we didn’t like about our break

Local attractions

Memorable moments on this caravan break might involve castles, historical houses and museums like Tiverton Castle (10 minutes’ drive), Bickleigh Castle (20 minutes) Knightshayes Gardens National Trust (15 minutes) and the 1778 house Killerton (20 minutes)… It might be all about the action, things like rides on a real digger at Diggerland Devon (10 minutes) or tackling the Tarka Trail from Appledore (an hour and 10 minutes). The Bear Trail (10 minutes) is no typical hiking trail either; it’s an obstacle course. Clifftop walks from Branscombe beach (50 minutes), Sidmouth (45 minutes) or Seaton (50 minutes) and the Topsham estuary walk to Exmouth (half an hour) will challenge you some more. If the local beaches haven’t already lured you in, continue onto the north coast beaches like Saunton Sands, Croyde, and Lynton and Lynmouth (between an hour and 10 minutes and an hour and 20 minutes). It might be that you’re here for historic spots like Bickleigh Mill (15 minutes), Hembury Fort (half an hour) or Buckfast Abbey (45 minutes). Or you may be after a little culture, like the music and theatre performances at The Corn Barn (35 minutes’ walk).
