Kingsmead Centre: Family glamping

General

  • Peaceful Blackdown Hills site with two fishing lakes
  • 15 minutes from Taunton and 30 from Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast
  • In a walkers' paradise: free maps of local trails available on site

This peaceful little site may take its name from the monarch’s honey wine, but these days it’s the food in the area that’s fit for a king: about 20 minutes' walk from the site is the Half Moon, serving fresh and traditional pub food with side order views over the Culm Valley.

Kingsmead Centre is excellent territory too for ramblers, cyclists and equestrians, with free maps for all the nearby trails available on site – a local recommendation is the longer-distance Neroche Herepath.

In a wooded vale in the Blackdown Hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), Kingsmead also has two coarse fishing lakes which are exclusively reserved for guests’ use, and is home to a wide variety of birds and other wildlife.

The shower and toilet facilities are simple and clean, with no shortage of free hot water. Well-behaved pets are welcome on site.

We stayed in The Willows and appreciate the caravans are of a certain age which reflects in the cost which is fine. However the settees are so old and have no support which makes them so uncomfortable

Lovely small campsite and as we were totally out of season, it was very quiet. We managed to walk across the fields to the pub in Clayhidon for a lovely roast dinner on Sunday and then strolled back along the quiet road on the way back. We rented a firepit for the chilly evenings which was lovely. We had out bikes with us so cycled to Hemyock but it was quite tough going in the hills! We also did a lovely (mostly up hill) walk to the Wellington monument from Lower Millhayes. Lovely long weekend and we would definitely recommend the site. Showers were lovely and hot!
