Kingsmead Centre: Woodland yurt set in its own private glade

General

  • Peaceful Blackdown Hills site with two fishing lakes
  • 15 minutes from Taunton and 30 from Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast
  • In a walkers' paradise: free maps of local trails available on site

This peaceful little site may take its name from the monarch’s honey wine, but these days it’s the food in the area that’s fit for a king: about 20 minutes' walk from the site is the Half Moon, serving fresh and traditional pub food with side order views over the Culm Valley.

Kingsmead Centre is excellent territory too for ramblers, cyclists and equestrians, with free maps for all the nearby trails available on site – a local recommendation is the longer-distance Neroche Herepath.

In a wooded vale in the Blackdown Hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), Kingsmead also has two coarse fishing lakes which are exclusively reserved for guests’ use, and is home to a wide variety of birds and other wildlife.

The shower and toilet facilities are simple and clean, with no shortage of free hot water. Well-behaved pets are welcome on site.

  • The Oaks 2 bedroom mobile home (no pets)

  • Liked:

We stayed in the Oaks which was a lovely caravan with seriously comfortable sofas and french windows onto a decking with peaceful views over wooded areas where all the tents and touring vans were nestled. Such a tranquil site with squirrels and birds making appearances from the woods and deer spotted on walking the quite country lanes. The site location was only 1/2 hour drive from the Dorset coast which we did a couple of times (the tram ride into Seaton from Colyton Station was so quaint, taking you through the wetlands- a must!), and a visit to Lyme Regis for walking along the seafront and fish and chips - perfect! (no fossil hunting trips though due to high tide). As mentioned on our welcome letter from the site managers - if you let the set nav guide you to places - it will take you down some seriously narrow lanes - very picturesque - but traveling for miles and miles down single track lanes can be hair raising experience. We recommend take a map book so you can pick the more major routes when you want - especially at night.

    Disliked:

It was suggested that you utilise the re-cycling bins for rubbish, but there seemed to be no system to sort your rubbish at the bins. The fishing lakes were somewhat neglected, and sadly absent of fish.
