The beautiful sunset over a T5
That sunset
Downends striking sunsets
Another beautiful day

  • Peaceful two-acre site five minutes’ walk from Croyde Beach
  • Ilfracombe 25 minutes’ drive; Watermouth Castle half an hour
  • Café and bar; surf school, surfboard hire and beach shop on site
It’s quite alright if you want to unwind all day long at Downend Point Campsite, in the peaceful North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Mind you, you may find that quite hard with there being two surfing beaches nearby, both accessible via the South West Coast Path: Croyde Beach (five minutes’ walk) and Saunton Sands (half an hour on foot). Yes, you’re in quite the surfer’s playground here… Backed by sand dunes, Croyde Beach is popular with swimmers and surfers, although rockpooling and relaxing may help while away a few hours too. There’s a lifeguard service between May and September, and dogs are welcome on the beach outside of these months. Another walk along the South West Coast Path takes you to the Baggy Point Cliffs (45 minutes), or you can head inland to Croyde village centre (15 minutes), where you might decide to stop in one of the two pubs for a drink. Downend has its own café-bar too, which serves beer and wine, plus Sri Lankan curries, through the day and evening. Time it right, and you’ll get to see one of the site’s stunning sunsets over dinner. There’s also a surf school, surfboard hire and a beach shop on site. Clean and bordered by heather and hedgerows, the site has two acres of land. Facilities include clean, modern toilets, coin-operated hot showers and a washing-up area.

What customers say

This campsite offers spectacular views and an unbeatable location just moments from the beach. Visitors frequently praise the friendly and helpful staff, particularly owner Henry. Amenities, including the cafe and bar, are well-received. While the site's natural beauty and proximity to the sea are consistently highlighted, some guests mention the pitches can be sloped and the shower facilities basic, though improvements have been noted over time. The site is popular for its relaxed atmosphere and excellent sea views.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Amazing views, great facilities. A very special spot.

Disliked Some bigger groups of young campers on site had extra visitors and were making a fair bit of noise after curfew. At this price we would have appreciated someone enforcing the campground rules as this affected our sleep.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Great views, walking distance to the beach. Very friendly, helpful staff. Dog friendly.

Disliked Expensive. Using public conveniences is not great. Small pitches, but luckily my neighbours were lovely. Close to the main road into Croyde.

Liked The VIEWS! What a location. Also, the warm and friendly welcome from Olly.

Disliked The loos weren’t great (blockages) and occasionally ran out of toilet paper.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Beautiful spot. Friendly and helpful staff. Great to get back to basics but at the same time, fab bar, food and surf hire, all excellent and reasonable prices. Highly recommended.

Disliked Nothing to dislike but, with no electric, a small freezer to recharge ice packs in the wash up area would be perfect.
