  • Peaceful two-acre site under five minutes' walk from Croyde beach
  • Stunning sunset views westward, over the beach, Lundy and Baggy Point
  • Café and bar; surf school, surfboard hire and beach shop on site
It’s quite alright if you decide to unwind all day long at Downend, which is in the peaceful North Devon Area of Outstanding Beauty. Although, you may find that quite hard with there being two surfing beaches on either side of the site: the stunning Croyde beach and Saunton Sands. Yes, you’re in quite the surfer’s playground here… It’ll take you less than five minutes to stroll to Croyde beach along the South West Coast Path. This stunning beach is backed by sand dunes and very popular with swimmers and surfers, although rockpooling and relaxing will pass many more hours too. There’s a lifeguard service on the beach between May and September, and dogs are welcome on the beach outside of these months. There are walks to the village, Baggy Point, Saunton Sands (just over half an hour) and other points on the South West coast path from the site. You may want to stop in one of the two pubs in Croyde (15 minutes’ walk) to eat some pub food or drink real ale and fine wine. Downend has its own café-bar too, which serves Sri Lankan curries and a range of beers, wines and prosecco through the day and evening. Time it right and you’ll get to see one of the site’s incredible sunsets at the same time; the site has a sea view, so sit back and unwind. There's also a surf school, surfboard hire and a beach shop on site. This pop-up site has clean, modern toilets and showers shared with the Downend car park, as well as washing-up facilities. There is a gradual slope over the field; the friendly staff are always on hand to help with this should you need them.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: The view! Really well run, super friendly place. As others have commented, the wash facilities are basic and I can imagine you’d queue a bit when the site is full, but it was fine for us midweek. They were cleaned regularly which is important. Having the bar and cafe there is great as the food is top notch.

Disliked: It’s on a bit of hill. With ramps we couldn’t quite level the van, but we also parked at the top of the hill which is steepest because the view is better and the view is one of the main attractions of this site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Amazing host and a stunning location overlooking the beautiful Croyde beach. Perfect for surfers as its a stones throw from the sea. Good facilities and great food. Skybar were in the adjacent field during our stay meaning we got to watch the entire set from our rooftent which was a bonus, it was nice to see the cows in the field behind bobbing their heads happily to the music as well. Thanks H for making us feel so welcome. We are bringing the kids back next week!

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Sea view, close to beach

Disliked: Field is very sloping unlike what it looks like in the postures. You need Big ramps to get anywhere near level. We had to pick a pitch at the bottom which seemed the flattest of the remaining pitches however this was right next to the road. The road is very busy occasionally and the odd boy racer in the middle of the night. Toilet facilities are basic at least. Having to share the toilets with the car park users isn't great. You have to pay for a token for the showers which at paying £40 for a pitch is something we weren't expecting and you only get about 3:30 minutes out of the 5 of water. No hooks to hang anything up.

From the manager: Hi Chris I have made mad a note of you review. We have now sorted the shower which now offers a full five minutes of hot shower, we have added hooks into the showers too. We do offer loan of ramps to overcome the slope. We are next to the road into Croyde which is a 30 mph limit and most road users are sensible - unfortunately as in any environment there will be a boy racer. The site is peaceful and has incredible views. Apologies if it was not quite what you expected. We aim to offer our customers the best experience we can The Downend Point Campsite Team
