  • Peaceful almost-wild pitches at a farm in Dartmoor National Park
  • A 10-minute drive to Buckfastleigh and the South Devon Railway
  • Next to the Two Moors Way; pub a few minutes' walk away
If you fancy a bit of Dartmoor wild camping but aren’t sure about finding a legal spot, then here’s an excellent option to take the stress out of the situation. Scorriton Court Campsite, within the national park about 10 minutes’ drive from Buckfastleigh, has the simple and peaceful vibe of a wild camping adventure but with the comfort that comes from knowing you’re in a designated camping spot where you’ll be welcome to spend the night. Along with that peace of mind also comes just a slight hint of modern convenience too – guests here have access to a portable toilet and mains water tap along with a campfire area with firewood and a barbecue provided. There’s also a shed where you’re welcome to set up camp if the weather’s really grotty. (Please note that you’ll be asked to take any waste away at the end of your trip, as there are no bins on site.) This is a working farm, so your neighbours are the cows and sheep in the next-door fields (please don’t open the gates or enter the fields for a closer look). It’s rural views all around here, with direct walking access to the moors from the field to make it easy for guests to get out for a hike. The site is also just next to the Two Moors Way route, so makes a handy overnight stopoff for those tackling the whole trail. Despite this completely rural outlook, the site is easily accessible from the A38 (about 10 minutes’ drive away) and only a few minutes’ walk from the nearest pub (in the village of Scorriton).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The night sky was pretty.

Disliked: The site is down what can only be described as a "rubble path", with some huge rocks that caused some scrapes to my car. There were no water facilities whatsoever, no taps or anything to fill up bottles or to do washing up. The grass was almost a foot long, the whole place seemed like it had been more or less abandoned, upkeep and water required.

From the manager: I'm glad you enjoyed the beautiful sky we have here in the evenings it really is a delight, and our remote location is the reason we can enjoy such a sky. We are down a drovers lane to the moor which means we don't have any busy roads near us and you can enjoy a peaceful stay. The lane is permissible provided you take it slowly and carefully per our other review. There is a mains water tap per the site photos located at the bottom of our field approximately in the middle of the hedge line, and a sign pointing it out. Apologies that you missed this, I try to meet all our campers to ensure they find the facilities and the local pub etc, but unfortunately you hadn't pitched up when I checked the field. We also have a portaloo at the site entrance for campers to use. My contact details are also on the gate if you require them. We are a working farm and this is a field not a lawn, so it isn't mown, we sustainably rely on our sheep and cows to do this job for us out of season. The recent weather has meant lots of grass growth but we haven't let the animals back in yet as we don't want mucky pitches for campers. If you are looking for a truly sustainable virtually wild pitch up campsite where you can be assured you have left no trace of your stay this is the right site for you, and I look forward to welcoming you to our working Dartmoor family farm.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Loved it, thankyou! Perfect for those doing the 2 moors way- we had 2 backpacker tents. We walked in and walked away, so the track didn't bother us. Quiet- We had exclusive use of the field, even on a summer Holidays weekend- so a very clean toilet! There is drinkable water here from a tap, and the camping perfect for a sense of wild camping without actually being wild. The owners came to see us and checked all was ok- very nice personal touch.

Disliked: Nothing! Read the description of this campsite first- it would not suit luxury style campers.

From the manager: Thanks so much for the lovely review, we agree it is perfect for the two moors way as it is literally next to the track, we would love to welcome you back and were happy to welcome children to the site. Many thanks again! Zoe

Local attractions

Dartmoor National Park provides the bulk of the attractions around here, with hikes usually top of the list for most guests – local favourite spots include Ryder Hill, Combestone Tor and Shavercombe Falls, with places like Haytor Rocks and Burrator Reservoir just a little further off. As well as all that, there’s kayaking and canoeing on the River Dart and plenty of places to go wild swimming (plus an open-air pool in Buckfastleigh if that’s more your style). For family time, you may like to meet the animals at Pennywell Farm or Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary (both 15 minutes’ drive) or see more exotic species at Dartmoor Zoo (half an hour). Or, if it’s time to sit down for a little while, how about a steam-driven ride on South Devon Railway (10 minutes)? Time for a change of scenery? Plymouth and Exeter are both about 45 minutes’ drive away for urban antics, or you can get to Paignton in about 40 minutes for a seaside day.
