  • Family site in Dartmoor National Park, seven miles from the coast
  • A couple of minutes' walk from a 16th-century pub
  • Teign valley views; shop; high-season weekend takeaway with breakfasts
'Feral children are welcome,' say the amicable owners of Hennock Hideaways near Devon's Bovey Tracey – and so this should be a site of happy days for their well-behaved grownups too. (Dogs that can behave around livestock are most welcome here as well.) While the kids are doing endless and happily tiring laps around the Hennock camping field, the big folk can get on with what's important in life, such as sparking up a campfire then cheerfully considering where to visit next on their Devon break: Hennock Hideaways is just inside Dartmoor National Park, about seven miles from the coast and less than 10 miles from Dawlish. Sitting back with a beer and submerging oneself in the Teign valley views might be a considerably clever option from here too… The site has basic facilities including four main toilets, two hot showers and a washing-up area (you're welcome to bring your own camping shower and toilet too). In high season, an on-site takeaway opens up on weekends only, selling fresh barista-style coffee and breakfasts. Take them back to your digs if you like, or settle at the outdoor seating for food with a view. Rather take a little walk? Pay a visit to the site's pygmy goats, which guests can feed. The family-friendly atmosphere, Devon ciders, real ales, wine and well-priced pub food of the local pub, a 16th-century freehouse, a two-minute walk away; cooked breakfasts are often available here too. On site, there's also a fully stocked 24-hour honesty shop that accepts card or cash payments. In the shop, there are limited lockers which can be used to charge phones or battery packs; they can be hired for 24 hours for a small fee. The site also has a communal fridge and freezer and a couple of electric points can be used to blow up air beds. (Hennock can't take tourers or large motorhomes because of its secluded location and narrow lanes; please also be careful with wide vehicles and sports cars when approaching the site.)

What customers say

This is a relaxed, dog-friendly campsite with stunning countryside views and a laid-back atmosphere. Families particularly enjoyed the children's play areas, goats, and the honesty shop, communal fridge/freezer. While some noted narrow access lanes and the site's hilly terrain, most found the facilities clean and well-maintained, with ample space. Some guests experienced issues with noise from other groups and concerns were raised regarding the density of pitches and campfire smoke. The owners have addressed noise issues by asking guests to respect the quiet atmosphere and clarify they live on site and respond to issues.

Non-electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked Beautiful view, quiet site with basic facilities but everything you need, and a well stocked shop. I appreciated the kettle and microwave as I came on my bicycle with no stove, so I could have tea and porridge in the morning. Close to a pub and pretty village. I like sites like these!

Non-electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked Our families loved this camping site. It was a good mix of relaxed and natural with some nice amenities. We especially appreciated the kids play areas, covered area with picnic tables and communal fridge/freezer. With only a short walk to the pub and incredible country views it’s a hidden gem.

Non-electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked What a wonderful campsite. Relaxed feel, no designated pitches, pay per person, dog friendly - well behaved dogs can relax by the tent off the lead! We were even treated to a bacon bap as it was a bank holiday weekend, what a treat! Lots of benches to chill on by the play areas and spaces to BBQ or picnic both in the sun and the shade. Small but perfectly formed with a lot of thought going into it.

Disliked Only 2 toilets and 2 showers rooms with toilets in and 1 extra toilet but with no sink. Sounds plenty but there was a long queue in the mornings. If there was a separate sink somewhere, even outside, then we could have brushed teeth and washed faces there rather than taken up a toilet for the time taken to brush teeth, while everyone was waiting. A minor point and certainly not a deal breaker, lovely campsite, will return.

Liked Great for kids with a play area, shadier tree climbing spot with swings and open space to run around with a ball.
All the basics catered for and the luxury of an honesty shop. Beautiful views. Would definitely go back.

Non-electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked The view was stunning and the village nice and quiet.

Disliked Do not stay here if you value your health or safety. This campsite is dangerously overcrowded and completely unregulated by management.

Pitches are packed tight, completely ignoring the mandatory 6-metre safety distance. During our stay, roughly 80% of the pitches lit campfires simultaneously. By midnight and into the early morning, the entire site was choked in suffocatingly thick smoke.

Our roof tent filled with smoke, causing us to suffer from severe headaches and violent coughing. It felt like a genuine suffocation hazard. With no staff on-site to handle the situation, we were forced to pack up our vehicle and abandon our stay in the middle of the night for our own safety.

To make matters worse, management completely ignored the emergency text number provided in our reservation. We reached out immediately and have still received zero response. This site is an accident waiting to happen. Avoid at all costs.

From the manager: We are genuinely sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us.

We do, however, feel it is important to clarify a few points for future guests reading this review.

We have been running the campsite for 11 years and take health, safety, and site management seriously. Risk assessments form part of how we operate the site, and on the very few occasions conditions have created a genuine fire risk, including periods of extreme drought when the grass was completely yellowed, we have made the decision to ban campfires entirely.

We live on site and were around throughout the afternoon and evening carrying out campsite jobs including cleaning the loos and showers, moving a marquee, and doing a late night walk around the site at approximately 11pm. If anyone had raised a welfare or safety concern during the night, we would absolutely have responded immediately, regardless of the time.

We did not receive any overnight texts or calls regarding smoke, illness, or emergencies. The only contact received was an email sent the following morning shortly after the review was posted.

We also respectfully disagree with the suggestion that the campsite was overcrowded. We have drone footage from the evening showing pitches spaced appropriately across the field.

Campfires are part of camping life here and most guests spend the evening toasting marshmallows, burning sausages, and debating whose job it was to bring the matches. That said, guest comfort and safety is something we take seriously and we always welcome polite feedback at the time so we can actually help.

Hennock Hideaways is a relaxed, rural campsite, not a polished holiday park, and while we know we will not be everyone’s cup of tea, we do care a great deal about the people who stay with us.

I will also shortly respond to your email received at 8.35am this morning.

Non-electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked Lovely site for a decent price, the owners have put a lot of effort into ensuring the facilities are clean and tidy. It’s away in the quiet countryside but lots of things to do a short 20 min drive any direction. The on site goats were great to watch while waiting for the showers. I felt safe as a solo female.

Disliked On a bit of a hill but I slept comfortably even without chocks. Wouldn’t recommend if you're not a confident driver - very tight single track lanes in all directions in - fine for me in a VW van but can see some people struggling. One downside for me was the unfortunate large group of people playing music you could hear across the whole campsite even though it’s advertised as a ‘quiet no music site’ which is why I booked it. No owners/staff appeared to tell them to turn it down all weekend.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and for recommending Hennock Hideaways.

I’m really pleased you enjoyed your stay, felt safe as a solo traveller, and appreciated the effort that goes into keeping the site clean and tidy. The goats will be delighted with their mention too.

I’m sorry to hear the music from another group affected your stay. I do ask guests to keep noise to a minimum and to respect the quiet atmosphere that many people come here for.

As I live on site as this is my home, if I’m aware of an issue, I’ll always do my best to deal with it. Unfortunately, I can’t be everywhere at once and I don’t spend the evening walking around the campsite listening for noise after 11pm. Once I’m indoors for the night, I can’t hear what’s happening across every corner of the site. If I’d known the music was disturbing other guests, I would have spoken to them happily.

Thank you again for your feedback and for your kind comments about the site. Hopefully I’ll see you again in the future. I’m beginning to loathe bank holidays as you can imagine as there is always one that may ruin for all others. 99% of the time we are just what we hope for and that’s a peaceful site.

Cheers Kate

Liked A gem! Tidy well organised site, first time I’ve been on a camper van/ tent only site and it’s good. Not busy so showers were excellent, lashings of hot water. yet to meet the owner. Not disturbed at all

Disliked Nothing personally, I can see why someone who is not used to driving a large camper would be a bit nervous in the lanes

Local attractions

Hennock Hideaways is only two miles from the A38 so has easy access to many Devon attractions inland and down towards the south coast (feel free to tackle the north Devon coast too: it's less than two hours away). Very close by, a local park is in Hennock village and three reservoirs are within a mile or two, one of which is a trout fly fishery. Pike fishing and boat hire are also available. Two miles away is Bovey Tracey with shops, a few more pubs, takeaways and a craft centre along with a pretty park with walks by the River Teign. And talking of walks... the letterboxing, hikes and tor-to-tor walks of Dartmoor are very close to base; small sorts heading here can also ride Dartmoor ponies. The south Devon coast of seaside town Teignmouth is about seven miles away: follow the coastal road from here to Torbay and then Brixham, where you can see the Hennock Hideaways' own fishing trawler the Katy Jane.
