General

  • Family site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Views of the Teign Valley
  • Two-minute walk from a 16th-century pub

'Feral children are welcome,' say the amicable owners of Hennock Hideaways near Devon's Bovey Tracey – and so this should be a site of happy days for their well-behaved grownups too. (Dogs that can behave around livestock are most welcome here as well.)

While the kids are doing endless and happily tiring laps around the Hennock camping field, the big folk can get on with what's important in life, such as sparking up a campfire then cheerfully considering where to visit next on their Devon hol: Hennock Hideways is just inside Dartmoor National Park, about seven miles from the coast and less than 10 miles from Dawlish. Sitting back with a beer and submerging oneself in the Teign Valley views might be a considerably clever option from here too.

The site has basic facilities including four main toilets, two hot showers and a washing-up area. Free tea and coffee is available at the Tea Shed and essentials can be picked up at the small on-site shop.

The family-friendly atmosphere, Devon ciders, real ales, wine and well-priced pub food of the local pub, 16th-century freehouse the Palk Arms, are a two-minute walk away; cooked breakfasts are often available here too.

(Hennock can't take tourers or large motorhomes because of its secluded location and narrow lanes; please also be careful with wide vehicles and sports cars when approaching the site.)

Loved our stay at Hennock Hideaways. As advertised the site does have a rustic feel however the facilities are more than adequate, showers ran nice and warm and were kept clean considering the wet weather. It was a nice touch to have a hot water facility at the Tea Shed for washing up. Use of fire pits was great too.
The roads leading to the site are on the narrow side but we managed to get to and from in a VW Transporter just fine.
The view in the mornings was just stunning.
We would definitely stay here again.

A great site! The owners are friendly and relaxed, not having a spot allocated was nice.

The honest shop was very handy, especially the bundles of firewood and kindling. The toilet facilities were excellent! Very clean, and the showers were good and hot.

The views over the valley were fantastic, as were the stars at night.

The local pub is friendly and comfortable, and the food is decent too.

A friendly local cat came and sat with us by the fire :)

    Disliked:

Would have been nice to have a shop or two in the village.

The site is on a bit of a slope with few flat spots to set up. May be uncomfortable for some people if you can't find a good spot.

Some of the narrow roads were a bit scary for a city chap like me!

The site was wonderful. the views were amazing, as advertised, the weather was great, which always helps.
this is one of the nicest sites i have stayed at, the tea shed is cute and just about right, the showers were clean and well appointed, there were extra toilets (although one had the largest spider in Devon trapped in the sink, so tat was one less for me to chose from!).
We have grown up children who are nice enough to not come camping with us but even so i was very impressed with the facilities for children, slides, trampoline, play area, craft tent, all very very thoughtful and done very well.
The honour shop was just about perfect, with the addition of a free to use freezer!
The pub down the road, appox 300 ft from the site. was very good, i would recommend this to any one and every one.
AND i could reception on my phone!
over all i would give the campsite 5 stars, 10/10 100% or full marks in which ever rating system you prefer.

Quiet, peaceful, good facilities, brilliant location. Very family orientated site, with lots for children to do. If you are travelling solo on a bike, pitch on the fence line adjacent to the allotments. Its quiet down there and away from the hustle and bustle of the family plots further up the field. The view was brilliant too. This is a good site for use as a stopover before moving into Devon or Cornwall. Well placed as a staging point for exploring Devon and Cornwall. Also useful for a stopover before pushing further south.

    Disliked:

    Nothing. Everything was positive.

Local attractions

Hennock Hideaways is only two miles from the A38 so has easy access to many Devon attractions inland and down towards the south coast. (Feel free to tackle the north Devon coast too: it's less than two hours away.)

Very close by, a local park is in Hennock village and three reservoirs are within a mile or two, one of which is a trout fly fishery. Pike fishing and boat hire are also available.

Two miles away is Bovey Tracey with shops, a few more pubs, takeaways and a craft centre along with a pretty park with walks by the River Teign.

And talking of walks... the letterboxing, hikes and tor-totor walks of Dartmoor are very close to base; small sorts heading here can also ride Dartmoor ponies.

The south Devon coast of seaside town Teignmouth is about seven miles away: follow the coastal road from here to Torbay and then Brixham, where you can see the Hennock Hideaways' own fishing trawler the Katy Jane.

Must see

  • Castle Drogo (8.7 miles)
  • Exeter Cathedral - Church of Saint Peter (9.2 miles)
  • Buckfast Abbey (10.0 miles)
