General

  • Family site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Views of the Teign Valley
  • Two-minute walk from a 16th-century pub

'Feral children are welcome,' say the amicable owners of Hennock Hideaways near Devon's Bovey Tracey – and so this should be a site of happy days for their well-behaved grownups too. (Dogs that can behave around livestock are most welcome here as well.)

While the kids are doing endless and happily tiring laps around the Hennock camping field, the big folk can get on with what's important in life, such as sparking up a campfire then cheerfully considering where to visit next on their Devon hol: Hennock Hideways is just inside Dartmoor National Park, about seven miles from the coast and less than 10 miles from Dawlish. Sitting back with a beer and submerging oneself in the Teign Valley views might be a considerably clever option from here too.

The site has basic facilities including four main toilets, two hot showers and a washing-up area. Free tea and coffee is available at the Tea Shed and essentials can be picked up at the small on-site shop.

The family-friendly atmosphere, Devon ciders, real ales, wine and well-priced pub food of the local pub, 16th-century freehouse the Palk Arms, are a two-minute walk away; cooked breakfasts are often available here too.

(Hennock can't take tourers or large motorhomes because of its secluded location and narrow lanes; please also be careful with wide vehicles and sports cars when approaching the site. )

Fantastic glamping set-up with unbeatable views. 18/09/2017

Absolutely stunning location and views in a fantastic and comfortable tent with all mod cons. Kate was very welcoming when we arrived rather late - then she was available if we needed her throughout our stay but fortunately we didn't. The evenings were fairly chilly (and this from a Northumbrian) but the Wood-burner inside the tent soon took effect and we had toasty evenings. The kitchen area was well-equipped and allowed us to prepare cooked breakfast and an evening meal without any problems. All-in-all a fantastic set up... which I'm sure we'll use again!

Lots of screaming children on trampoline. Tried to pitch as far away as I could on a level surface. Lovely and peaceful when they all went home.

Fantastic campsite with glorious views and very helpful owners who stay completely out of your hair. The facilities are not fancy but clean and exactly what's needed for a rustic camping holiday. Braziers are provided for a cheery campfire and the site is dog friendly with a friendly dog of its own. The pub down the road is brilliant and does a great Sunday roast. The village of Hennock is stunningly beautiful and a great base for walking on the coast and on Dartmoor. Can't wait to return :)

    Disliked:

Some of the pitches are on a slope but if not at peak times you should have no problem finding a flatter one.

Very peaceful back to basics site with wonderful views over Devon countryside, it reminded me of camping holidays in the early 1960's. Open fires and watching the stars at night with a bottle of cider, whats not to like....? The lanes are very narrow and all the pitches are on sloping ground.

Fairly basic but really well thought out and relaxed campsite. Showers were hot and worked. Views were spectacular. Great value for money. Also worth knowing you can get wifi at the very close pub - but its only open in the evenings and gets very busy. I liked that there were camping chairs you could borrow. Also play equipment including a trampoline for kids.

Local attractions

Hennock Hideaways is only two miles from the A38 so has easy access to many Devon attractions inland and down towards the south coast. (Feel free to tackle the north Devon coast too: it's less than two hours away.)

Very close by, a local park is in Hennock village and three reservoirs are within a mile or two, one of which is a trout fly fishery. Pike fishing and boat hire are also available.

Two miles away is Bovey Tracey with shops, a few more pubs, takeaways and a craft centre along with a pretty park with walks by the River Teign.

And talking of walks... the letterboxing, hikes and tor-totor walks of Dartmoor are very close to base; small sorts heading here can also ride Dartmoor ponies.

The south Devon coast of seaside town Teignmouth is about seven miles away: follow the coastal road from here to Torbay and then Brixham, where you can see the Hennock Hideaways' own fishing trawler the Katy Jane.
