Hennock Hideaways: Visitor image of site pitches

General

  • Family site in Dartmoor National Park, seven miles from the coast
  • A couple of minutes' walk from a 16th-century pub
  • Teign valley views; shop; high-season takeaway with breakfasts

'Feral children are welcome,' say the amicable owners of Hennock Hideaways near Devon's Bovey Tracey – and so this should be a site of happy days for their well-behaved grownups too. (Dogs that can behave around livestock are most welcome here as well.)

While the kids are doing endless and happily tiring laps around the Hennock camping field, the big folk can get on with what's important in life, such as sparking up a campfire then cheerfully considering where to visit next on their Devon break: Hennock Hideways is just inside Dartmoor National Park, about seven miles from the coast and less than 10 miles from Dawlish. Sitting back with a beer and submerging oneself in the Teign valley views might be a considerably clever option from here too…

The site has basic facilities including four main toilets, two hot showers and a washing-up area (you're welcome to bring your own camping shower and toilet too). In high season an on-site takeaway opens up, selling fresh coffee and breakfasts in the mornings, and stone-baked pizza and nachos in the evenings. Take them back to your digs if you like, or settle at the outdoor seating for food with a view.

Rather take a little walk? The family-friendly atmosphere, Devon ciders, real ales, wine and well-priced pub food of the local pub, 16th-century freehouse the Palk Arms, are a two-minute walk away; cooked breakfasts are often available here too.

(Hennock can't take tourers or large motorhomes because of its secluded location and narrow lanes; please also be careful with wide vehicles and sports cars when approaching the site.)

Really lovely campsite. It's got a nice remote authentic feel and you can have a fire. It feels pretty basic when you arrive but there's quite a few amenities when you look around, showers, fridge, freezer, honesty shop and charging lockers for your devices. It's really good value for money. I will stay here again when I return to this area. It has a good location in being short drive from both Exeter and Dartmoor.

Pleasant rural site with spectacular views, the kids loved having the trampoline by the washing hut and seeing the goats and chickens. Facilities are simple but adequate, the provision of the honesty shop and communal fridge /freezer was good.
Nice being just a couple hundred yards from the local pub too.

    Disliked:

Never actually saw any staff / owners but it wasn't an issue. Also the good view comes from being on top of the hill so be prepared for a breeze!

Local attractions

Hennock Hideaways is only two miles from the A38 so has easy access to many Devon attractions inland and down towards the south coast (feel free to tackle the north Devon coast too: it's less than two hours away).

Very close by, a local park is in Hennock village and three reservoirs (Tottiford, Trenchford and Kennick) are within two or three miles, one of which is a trout fly fishery. Pike fishing and boat hire are also available.

Two miles away is Bovey Tracey with shops, a few more pubs, takeaways, pottery classes and a craft centre along with a pretty park with walks by the River Teign. And talking of walks... the letterboxing, hikes and tor-to-tor walks of Dartmoor are very close to base; small sorts heading here can also ride Dartmoor ponies.

The south Devon coast of seaside town Teignmouth is about seven miles away: follow the coastal road from here to Torbay and then Brixham, where you can see the Hennock Hideaways' own fishing trawler the Katy Jane. Other nice coastal spots (with beaches and/or fishing villages) include Dawlish, Torquay and Paignton.

Go hiking and biking in Haldon Forest Park (20 minutes' drive) and Dartmoor.

Must see

  • Castle Drogo (8.7 miles)
  • Exeter Cathedral - Church of Saint Peter (9.3 miles)
  • Buckfast Abbey (10.0 miles)

The site is in a national park and so the entrance is not lit due to park regulations: therefore no arrivals can be accepted after 8pm.

Please note that at times of extreme wet weather the site entrance may be muddy, but it will be safe to enter. There are two secondary and signposted exits which remain dry.

As a rural site in a quiet area, the site does not accept large campervans (over 7 meters) as it has narrow country lanes.

The toilets and showers are down the bottom of a slope, between 40 metres and 80 metres from the nearest pitch. The site location is at least 10 minutes' drive along country lanes and uphill.

The local pub is closed on Mondays and lunchtimes.

The shop is only fully stocked at peak times - bank holidays, half terms and summer holidays. No perishable goods are stocked at other times.

Guests can recycle all types of rubbish by separation, including food and nappies, but dustbin liners of mixed rubbish cannot be accepted.

Children must be supervised at all times.
