  • Family-friendly site on a farm in Devon, with views of the sea
  • South West Coast Path 10-minute drive; Exmoor National Park one hour
  • Rescued hens, lambs and horses; horsebox shower and a farm shop
If you love animals but cannot keep any (for whatever reason), a holiday at Staracre might be a good opportunity to get your fill of cute critters. This family-friendly site on a 60-acre farm in the Devon countryside is home to a menagerie of animals, from horses and alpacas to rescued hens. This is also a place where you can embrace simplicity and experience off-grid living. Wake up to splendid views of the sea and rugged Lundy Island, take care of your ablutions in the restored horsebox trailer (there’s a shower and a bathtub), then set off for a day of exploring. You’ll be in the middle of the North Devon Coast Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty here, and the South West Coast Path is a 10-minute drive away – or a one-hour walk through the fields and woods of the Marsland Valley. After that walk, you might want to take a dip at Welcombe Mouth Beach (10 minutes’ drive), a peaceful pebbly stretch with a waterfall. Of course, if you’re travelling with kids, you might struggle to get them off the site at all, as they’ll likely want to spend entire days cuddling with Betsy Lou the therapy lamb, checking out the fairy forest or climbing trees. Handily you don't have to travel far to sort out eats though: you can purchase local produce from the farm shop, and there's a community shop a 10-minute walk away. Please note: because there are so many animals on site, dogs are not allowed.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very quiet site, all campers are encouraged by the host to spread out to avoid being near each other. Beautiful rural setting and very quiet at night. Took a large number of children with us who enjoyed the freedom to play in a secure and safe environment. Horse-box shower was unconventional but functional and composting toilets were exactly what you would imagine. There is also a small "farm shop" on site which is a nice touch. Host very friendly and happy to answer any questions. Also gave a chaperoned meet of the animals on site to the children.

Disliked: Only one water source in an inconvenient location. Would advise campers to bring large containers to reduce dependence on tap. Other than set up and breaking camp cars are to be kept in the car park near the entrance. Not an issue but be prepared and make sure to unpack cars completely!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: View and location

Disliked: Facilities were not fit for purpose. Water did not heat and ran out. Had to empty the compost toilet after other guests used the toilet.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We stayed here for 2 nights, we were a group of 4 adults and 2 children. Upon arrival, you need to call Nadia to come and unlock the gated entrance. (This is a fantastic security measure for free roaming children) Nadia the host is the kindest lady, she has rescued numerous animals, which she loves everyone to interact with. We spend a wonderful morning with Nadia and her lovely children berry picking, grooming the ponies, and meeting all the animals. There is plenty of room, and you are able to choose your own spot where you would like to pitch up. There is unlimited space for children to safely play. This place is not for you if you like modern luxuries such as flushing toilets a shower block/ washing up point. This is wild camping, although there are compost toilets, along with1 shower and a bath in a quaint horsebox. You do need to call the host if you would like to come in or out, however Nadia always answered the phone and opened the gate within a few minutes, and as i said its great security for the children. I believe fires are permitted, however you will need to supply your own pit and wood. Nadia has not been here long, and has some fantastic ideas for the future of Staracre.I embraced the experience and genuinely had the best time. I am already excited to return again and see what Nadia has done
