General
- Family-run site on a smallholding with views out over Dartmoor’s tors
- Just outside the national park, half an hour’s drive from Bude’s beach
- Animals to meet on site; alpaca trekking trips close by
Deliberating over where to stay in Dartmoor? Make your way to Mount Pleasant Farm, a compact but well-formed site with terrific views across the national park’s tors.
Pull up a pew at one of the picnic benches dotted around the grounds to eye up said hills or take in the vistas as you grill up grub in the barbecue areas. These alfresco cooking spaces are surrounded by an island of grass for the dogs to run off-leash, so you can get them out from under your feet as you whip up a meal.
Speaking of animals, there are plenty of these at the grounds. The farm is home to a smattering of chickens, geese, peacocks, rabbits and sheep, as well as ducks that guests are welcome to feed. Stroll up the road to amble with a troupe of alpacas too (trekking trips with these furry creatures are available).
Set quarter of a mile off the main road, Mount Pleasant Farm – a restful spot circled by woods and bridleways for wandering – is as peaceful as it sounds. For refuelling on return from your hikes, pick up food and drinks at a village shop under 10 minutes’ drive away in Halwill and keep everything cool in the shared fridge on base.
For meals out, a local pub is around the same distance, plus plenty of eateries are in Bude, half an hour’s drive away and your gateway to gorgeous beaches on the north Devon coast.

Don't follow a satnav when coming off the A30; instead follow the A386 past the Shell garage to the roundabout, then follow the A3079 towards Bude and look out for the grey Mount Pleasant sign on the left after about five miles.
Local attractions
Fan of fishing? Set off for the lush lakes at Anglers Paradise. Prefer archery? Hit the bullseye at the Arms of Old centre (both 10 minutes’ drive). Or how about hiking? Head to Roadford Reservoir (15 minutes), the largest freshwater area in England's south west, for strolls and watersports. Bikes? Off to the traffic-free Tarka Trail with you (pick it up 10 minutes away in Okehampton).
For town times, there’s Launceston (25 minutes), the ancient capital of Cornwall with its castle and a steam railway, as well as Tavistock (half an hour), a canalside ancient stannary settlement that claims to be the home of the cream tea.
Try this traditional Devon dessert then bound over to Bude for swims at the sea pool followed by sunbathing in front of the pastel-coloured beach huts (half an hour). Thrill-seekers could organise a surfing lesson on one of the beaches – a top pick is the sandy Summerleaze – or stay dry while dashing around the dodgems at Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre (20 minutes).
Keep the fun times going for the kids with outings to The BIG Sheep and The Milky Way Adventure Park – both 45 minutes' drive away and fab for family days out. Grownups may prefer the more leisurely pleasures of RHS Rosemoor and Dartington Crystal (both half an hour).
