Mount Pleasant Farm: Welcome!

General

  • Family-run site on a smallholding with views out over Dartmoor’s tors
  • Just outside the national park, half an hour’s drive from Bude’s beach
  • Animals to meet on site; alpaca trekking trips close by

Deliberating over where to stay in Dartmoor? Make your way to Mount Pleasant Farm, a compact but well-formed site with terrific views across the national park’s tors.

Pull up a pew at one of the picnic benches dotted around the grounds to eye up said hills or take in the vistas as you grill up grub in the barbecue areas. These alfresco cooking spaces are surrounded by an island of grass for the dogs to run off-leash, so you can get them out from under your feet as you whip up a meal.

Speaking of animals, there are plenty of these at the grounds. The farm is home to a smattering of chickens, geese, peacocks, rabbits and sheep, as well as ducks that guests are welcome to feed. Stroll up the road to amble with a troupe of alpacas too (trekking trips with these furry creatures are available).

Set quarter of a mile off the main road, Mount Pleasant Farm – a restful spot circled by woods and bridleways for wandering – is as peaceful as it sounds. For refuelling on return from your hikes, pick up food and drinks at a village shop under 10 minutes’ drive away in Halwill and keep everything cool in the shared fridge on base.

For meals out, a local pub is around the same distance, plus plenty of eateries are in Bude, half an hour’s drive away and your gateway to gorgeous beaches on the north Devon coast.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Bookings must not consist of more than 2 different households.

Onsite entertainment will not be offered due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Minimum spacing of 2 metres between pitches.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.

Wow. What can I say, Paul and Trish were amazing from the moment we arrived, so welcoming and helpful. Paul gave us a tour of the site and pointed out the very handy electric kettle! A cuppa was so needed after a busy day exploring and it was nice not to have to wait for the gas in our van!

We travelled with our 5 year old son who is animal mad, Paul took the time to walk him round all of the animals and then invited him to meet a baby duckling just 2 days old. Our son also helped collect the eggs and feed the animals the next morning. The dogs on site are ever so friendly and very well behaved. Trish kindly gave our son some leftover bread to feed the ducks the next morning which he loved.

The campsite itself is lovely! We stayed on the hard standing pitch, which was next to a grassy area with picnic benches and communal bbqs which we enjoyed. Our son played with the multitude of garden games provided which gave us both some time to cook and organise dinner.

The bathroom facilities are excellent, spotlessly clean and the family shower room is ideal. The shower is hot and powerful, exactly what we all needed after a long day. We all slept so well, the site is peaceful and relaxing.

Can’t wait to book again, highly recommend. Our favourite campsite we’ve ever visited.

The facilities were really good, everything was clean and tidy. The family bathroom is a really good idea and useful for families with young children. The owners could not of been more helpful and approachable. The bonus of a fridge and freezer to use was fab and access plug sockets for charging devices was a real bonus. There are purpose built barbecues as well. Would definitely go again, the kids had a fabulous time and the site is in a good central position, so easy to visit different areas of Devon and Cornwall. 10/10

Only thing I disliked is having to worry about my toddler with sticking his hands in the geese enclosure maybe an extra gate between the animals and the camping site would be handy but it wasn't a massive issue the kids loved the animals (it states farm therefore animals as expected)

Really accommodating friendly hosts. Lovely big pitches. Very small site. Clean warm toilets and great family bathroom. Animals and games to entertain the kids. BBQ facilities and tables and chairs in the sun.

    Disliked:

The pitches were under trees so in the shade. Expensive when booked through pitchup.com

From the manager...

Thank you so much for a great review. Most of our guests are grateful for the shade over the pitches on a hot day, but we appreciate this isn't always for everyone. Wonderful to meet you guys, and thank you for choosing to stay with us.

Friendly welcome and guided tour from Paul. The toilet, shower and washing up facilities were spotless. Paul was always helpful if needed. The site was a great location for where we needed to be (and found a fish & chip shop just down the road after a long day when we couldn't be bothered). The motorhome pitches are level and easy to access. The bridleway next door is really handy for walking the dog.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, ended up booking on a whim after leaving another campsite after one night, so glad we did. Michelle, Trish and Paul made us feel so welcome and were all so friendly, our girls loved all the animals on-site too.
Facilities were clean and warm and were ideal for us with it being a family bathroom set up so I had space to get the girls sorted without clothes, towels etc ending up soaking wet on the floor! Indoor and outdoor washing up areas with plenty of hot water were a winner too.
Beautiful views from our pitch, the moon rising over Dartmoor was spectacular.
We drove to Clovelly after a chat with Paul and were so glad we did, fantastic few hours out before returning to camp for dinner and a campfire.. thank you for such a great stay!

Don't follow a satnav when coming off the A30; instead follow the A386 past the Shell garage to the roundabout, then follow the A3079 towards Bude and look out for the grey Mount Pleasant sign on the left after about five miles.

Local attractions

Fan of fishing? Set off for the lush lakes at Anglers Paradise. Prefer archery? Hit the bullseye at the Arms of Old centre (both 10 minutes’ drive). Or how about hiking? Head to Roadford Reservoir (15 minutes), the largest freshwater area in England's south west, for strolls and watersports. Bikes? Off to the traffic-free Tarka Trail with you (pick it up 10 minutes away in Okehampton).

For town times, there’s Launceston (25 minutes), the ancient capital of Cornwall with its castle and a steam railway, as well as Tavistock (half an hour), a canalside ancient stannary settlement that claims to be the home of the cream tea.

Try this traditional Devon dessert then bound over to Bude for swims at the sea pool followed by sunbathing in front of the pastel-coloured beach huts (half an hour). Thrill-seekers could organise a surfing lesson on one of the beaches – a top pick is the sandy Summerleaze – or stay dry while dashing around the dodgems at Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre (20 minutes).

Keep the fun times going for the kids with outings to The BIG Sheep and The Milky Way Adventure Park – both 45 minutes' drive away and fab for family days out. Grownups may prefer the more leisurely pleasures of RHS Rosemoor and Dartington Crystal (both half an hour).
