Pitches

General

  • Family-run site on a smallholding with views out over Dartmoor’s tors
  • Just outside the national park, half an hour’s drive from Bude’s beach
  • Animals to meet on site; alpaca trekking trips close by

Deliberating over where to stay in Dartmoor? Make your way to Mount Pleasant Farm, a compact but well-formed site with terrific views across the national park’s tors.

Pull up a pew at one of the picnic benches dotted around the grounds to eye up said hills or take in the vistas as you grill up grub in the barbecue areas. These alfresco cooking spaces are surrounded by an island of grass for the dogs to run off-leash, so you can get them out from under your feet as you whip up a meal.

Speaking of animals, there are plenty of these at the grounds. The farm is home to a smattering of chickens, geese, peacocks, rabbits and sheep, as well as ducks that guests are welcome to feed. Stroll up the road to amble with a troupe of alpacas too (trekking trips with these furry creatures are available).

Set quarter of a mile off the main road, Mount Pleasant Farm – a restful spot circled by woods and bridleways for wandering – is as peaceful as it sounds. For refuelling on return from your hikes, pick up food and drinks at a village shop under 10 minutes’ drive away in Halwill and keep everything cool in the shared fridge on base.

For meals out, a local pub is around the same distance, plus plenty of eateries are in Bude, half an hour’s drive away and your gateway to gorgeous beaches on the north Devon coast.

Please note

Onsite entertainment will not be offered due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Minimum spacing of 2 metres between pitches.

Bookings must not consist of more than 2 different households.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Lots of potential, but hasn't got there yet.
The facilities, one bathroom & one other toilet, shower & dishwashing sink combined, were kept very clean, which was fine for the fact that there was only three occupied pitches. With any more campers I can't imagine the queues.
Adjacent field used by cable laying firm, which makes it look rather industrial.
Everything needs tidying and smartening up to compete with other sites.

From the manager...

hi thanks for the input but you have got it wrong we have two toilets and two showers in the shower block where i believe at the the time of your visit i said that the shower was not in use because i was redoing the tiles in the left hand side of the block. that has the toilet cubical with hand basin to wash your hands and shower cubical and one of the two washing up sinks and fridge and electric kettle all of which are separate units, which still left two toilets and two sinks and one shower and basin in the family /disabled friendly side sink because of the quite time after the kids have gone back to school etc we also have an out side sink for washing up with hot water. With regards to the bottom field which is behind a large bank, edge and trees it is used to store cable drums and can only be seen through the gates in to the yard as it is surrounded on all four sides by a large bank, edge and trees or do you mean my storage area where i park the tractor and all my farm equipment, which also is behind a large grass bank out of site from the main camping / hard standing pitches etc and can only be seen when you walk out of the farm and through the gates. We are as we say a small holding which requires a place to store items. I am very sorry that we not be seeing you again and hope you met up with the other people on your trip up country

Mount Pleasant was a wonderfully serene, friendly campsite to stay at. The area was well-organised and coordinated and facilities were clean, bright and well stocked at all times.

Mount Pleasant was well signposted from the road and tucked away in a quiet spot. We had the choice to pitch our tent in the lea of a hedgerow or out in the sunshine .

Fresh eggs available on site was a bonus!

Mount pleasant was a good central location for us as we were driving Toyota North and South Devon as well as the Eden Project (1 hour away) during our stay. Two good pubs nearby, a short drive away.

Small campsite, really welcoming hosts, kids loved the animals and ducks, easy access to the moors and beach so best of both worlds. Easy access off the main roads but far enough away that it was very quiet at night.

    Disliked:

Nothing! It was great for us!

If you didn’t have your own facilities (we were in our motorhome) then there could be queues for the toilets/showers, but for those that like a no-thrills campsite, this site is perfect.

Local attractions

Fan of fishing? Set off for the lush lakes at Anglers Paradise. Prefer archery? Hit the bullseye at the Arms of Old centre (both 10 minutes’ drive). Or how about hiking? Head to Roadford Reservoir (15 minutes), a manmade lake and the largest freshwater area in England's south west, for strolls around the perimeter.

For town times, there’s Launceston (25 minutes), the ancient capital of Cornwall with its castle and a steam railway, as well as Tavistock (half an hour), a canalside ancient stannary settlement that claims to be the home of the cream tea.

Try this traditional Devon dessert then bound over to Bude for swims at the sea pool followed by sunbathing sessions in front of the pastel-coloured beach huts (half an hour). Thrill-seekers could organise a surfing lesson on one of the beaches – a top pick is the sandy Summerleaze – or stay dry while dashing around the dodgems at Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre (20 minutes).

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (21.2 kilometres)
  • Castle Drogo (25.7 kilometres)
