Westland Farm: Visitor image of the amazing scenery

General

  • Quiet site with lots of space on a working farm: campfires allowed
  • On the edge of Exmoor National Park 10 minutes' drive from the beach
  • Visit the farm animals and gather freshly laid eggs for breakfast

Venture towards Devon's north coast for splendid stays on a working farm, on the edge of Exmoor National Park and 10 minutes' drive from the nearest beach at Combe Martin.

Westland Farm is a small working farm in north Devon, half a mile from Blackmoor Gate and well placed for days roaming around the moor or adventuring and surfing around the coast: Ilfracombe and Woolacombe are 20 and 25 minutes' drive away.

The farm's mission is to offer back-to-basics stays with plenty of space, where guests can sit by a campfire outside their tent, beer in hand, to watch the night sky. For junior guests, there's loads of green space to run around in, as well as farm animals to meet and say hi to: guests are also welcome to gather the farm hens' freshly laid eggs for breakfast.

Although this is old-school camping, Westland Farm doesn't skimp on the amenities: a well-equipped, clean and heated toilet and shower block is to hand for guests, and there are electric points to charge phones in the laundry room.

The farm is half a mile from its local pub, which serves food all day.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Really decent facilities, nice grass pitches easy to peg in and good location. Amazing stars at night, some of the best I've seen in England. The pigs were funny too.

We received a friendly greeting on arrival from the owners and their dog. We were shown the facilities which were excellent. The toilets and showers were clean and there was plenty of hot water. The bathrooms are more like how you would expect them to be in a hotel rather than a campsite! We could pitch our tent where we liked which meant we could find a flat spot with a direct view of the cows and sheep in the neighbouring fields. We enjoyed being able to wonder around the farm and say hi to the animals. We even got to check the chicken coop for freshly laid eggs!
Other facilities include sockets to charge your phone, a fridge, freezer and washing machine (honesty box). They also had wood for sale but you need to bring your own BBQ. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely come again.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike as such but remember to take a torch if you want to wash up after dark as there are no lights by the sinks.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. We love that you enjoyed your stay here and would recommend it to friends and family. Thanks for your note about the washing up shed. We will see what we can do for lighting in the washing up shed.

The welcome on arrival was lovely. The owner showed me around, and was very friendly and welcoming. The shower and toilet facilities were clean and modern, and seemed to be ample for the site. Fresh farm produce was available if required. It’s a peaceful and mindful place to stay, and I could wander around seeing (and feeding) some of the farm animals. The pigs were especially fond of cold boiled potatoes, I discovered! It’s about 20 minutes drive from Lynmouth, which was a bonus for me. The Black Venus pub is relatively close by, and the food is superb! The farmers son took the time to bring his young sheepdog Nell over to my tent and we spent a good hour chatting. There is nothing to dislike about the site, whatsoever. It is somewhere where I hope to visit again. I loved every minute of my stay there. You will, too.

Brilliant shower and toilet block and even a washing up area and a fridge freezer, plenty of space - on good grassy pitches, friendly folk that run the place.

    Disliked:

Noise from the main road - boy racers, the cockerel that can’t tell the time - cock-a-doodle-do at half 2 in the morning - oh and the thoughtless clown on the next pitch who sat up talking loudly in his phone til nearly midnight and then opened and closed all his van doors!

From the manager...

Hi Sean
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. As a working farm, we do have farm noises. From memory you did pitch close to the road and just the other side if the hedge from the chickens. There are plenty of pitches further from the road and away from the chickens. So glad you enjoyed your stay here. We'd love to see you again some time and and hope that next time you have less disturbances. I'll have a word with the cockerel!

Peaceful rural site, great facilities and lovely staff02/07/2022

Site is peaceful and rural, I enjoyed being surrounded by the animals and watching some boisterous lambs giving the geese a run for their money.
I was greeted initially and shown around by the owners and their warden dog. They were friendly, relaxed and informative.
As it is unallocated spaces I chose a patch in the corner where it was a little more level. There is some traffic noise but I didn't find this to be excessive and it didn't disturb my sleep.
I found the site to be clean and welcoming, you have to understand that this is on a working farm and not a commercially branded site. Things aren't spotless but they are clean. The showers were lovely and warm and I found there to be plenty available. The facilities generally are good for a site that has a more authentic camping feel to it.
I travelled alone so cannot comment on the child friendly-ness of the place but there were some children here who were having a great time looking at the animals and running around in the ample green space (not attached to their phones).
Within walking distance of the reservoir nearby, which is great for bird spotting!
Rustic, Rural and Relaxing; I'll definitely be back.

Local attractions

Weeks' worth of adventures and attractions start in two directions from the farm: Blackmore Gate and the entrance to Exmoor National Park are under a mile to the north west, and spectacular north Devon beaches, surfing and other watersports are accessible from Combe Martin and beyond, 10 minutes' drive away.

The kids will probably clamour for the beach first, so take them to the three splendid Victorian seaside towns close by: Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and Woolacombe (possibly have a separate day for each as there's loads to see and do). At Combe Martin, the dino express, animatronic dinosaurs, meerkats and animal experiences of Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park should prove a monster hit; Ilfracombe is particularly famed for its Tunnels beaches and its harbour, and Woolacombe is the most famed north Devon spot for surfing.

And then to Exmoor… access it within walking distance to stride off over the moor, or drive in to reach the closest information centre, Lynmouth (15 minutes), and gather armfuls on info on Exmoor's hiking, horse riding, events, wildlife and towns and villages.

In the other direction from the park, it's a mile's walk to the boating, birdwatching, trout fishing and nature spotting of Wistlandpound reservoir, and 15 minutes' drive to a day's shopping and sightseeing at Barnstaple. The team also recommends Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (10 minutes), and, further afield at 45 minutes, the famed RHS gardens at Rosemoor.
