  • Quiet site with lots of space on a working farm: campfires allowed
  • On the edge of Exmoor National Park 10 minutes' drive from the beach
  • Visit the farm animals and gather freshly laid eggs for breakfast
Venture towards Devon's north coast for splendid stays on a working farm, on the edge of Exmoor National Park and 10 minutes' drive from the nearest beach at Combe Martin. Westland Farm is a small working farm in north Devon, half a mile from Blackmoor Gate and well placed for days roaming around the moor or adventuring and surfing around the coast: Ilfracombe and Woolacombe are 20 and 25 minutes' drive away. The farm's mission is to offer back-to-basics stays with plenty of space, where guests can sit by a campfire outside their tent, beer in hand, to watch the night sky. For junior guests, there's loads of green space to run around in, as well as farm animals to meet and say hi to: guests are also welcome to gather the farm hens' freshly laid eggs for breakfast. Although this is old-school camping, Westland Farm doesn't skimp on the amenities: a luxurious heated toilet and shower block is to hand for guests, and there are electric points to charge phones in the laundry room. The farm is half a mile from its local pub, which serves food all day.

Shepherd's hut (hot tub, pet friendly)

Liked: We liked absolutely EVERYTHING, including the mysterious, misty weather when we arrived (well, it was February!). I never let bad weather spoil my holidays but the host Nicky is amazing and upgraded us to the Crinkley Cabin as we were staying 4 nights. This was truly appreciated as we've had a run of bad luck, so it was really nice to have some good luck for a change! I got to peak at the other units too & I can confirm they are all gorgeous. We had originally booked the Shepherds & it's also really cute. We would have happily stayed there. It has great views down to the reservoir & it's close to the shower block. Nicky is simply the kindest, nicest person I've met in a while & happily told us all about the farm in covid, the lambing process, her rescue horse & much more. We really enjoyed chatting with her. We really enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub & sauna & visiting the pigs & piglets to feed them leftovers! We also enjoyed cooking on the wood burning stove - we made baked potatoes, lasagne & pizza during our stay. We loved putting wood on the wood burner and just chilling out, playing games and reading. We brought a power bank so that lack of electricity was not a problem, in fact it was lovely to be off-grid. The views from the Crinkley Cabin are amazing. Its lovely in the evening, with the sheeps bleating and one night there was an amazing sun-set. We LOVED the location. It's within easy reach of Woolacombe and Ilfracombe and we visited both as well as Lee bay, which has the cutest village pub called The Grampus Inn. I highly recommend this cute little quirky pub. The bar maid is a folk singer and they have open mike nights. They had a roaring fire going the day we visited and it had been raining so we were very wet and she recommended a hot chocolate with Jack Daniels. That was yummy. She does wild swimming in the sea and told us about about the mythical Selkies. We also did part of the walk from The Hunters Inn to Woody Bay but had to turn back part way as our dog is really old so we didn't want to tire him out too much. The views on this walk are simply stunning, so I highly recommend it. And the Hunters inn is a lovely pit-stop on your return for a quick pint. The Crinkley Cabin has its own toilet & shower room but the shower block is great if you are staying in the shepherds hut. There's every thing you need in this Cabin. All I can say is BOOK IT! All the farm staff are lovely and we want to visit again in the summer. However, the Crinkly Cabin is the perfect retreat in winter as you've got the cosy wood burner in your hut - and the sauna so it makes it even cosier when it's cold. I also loved the little brook / water course by the cabin (you have your own little bridge to cross to reach the cabin) & the ducks that came to play.

Disliked: There is simply nothing I disliked. I liked everything about this place. The weather could have been better - but even that added to the romance of our stay as it was very cosy in the cabin with the fire blazing and the rain lashing the cabin. I'm one of those weirdos who loves the sound of rain!

Shepherd's hut (hot tub, pet friendly)

Liked: We had a lovely couple of nights in the Shepherds hut despite the grey and wet weather. The hut is very cosy, the kids loved the hot tub and visiting the animals. Lovely hosts and plenty to do in the area, we’ll be back 😊

Drovers shepherd's hut (hot tub, pet friendly)

Liked: The qaint feel and the animals

Disliked: We arrived at 3:30pm and the place wasn't ready for us.

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. Although I feel it is rather harsh. I'm sorry you seem to have had a different experience to most of our other guests, who leave us raving reviews and who come back year after year. You had arranged with me to arrive early and I had the hut ready for you at 1.30 with the fire lit and the hot tub going. When you arrived later than arranged, at 3.30, I was just added some finishing touches to another hut. You phoned to let me know you had arrived and I explained I just had to finish mopping the floor and would be straight up, which I was. I can't help but feel your main problem was very wet weather and 3 very exuberant children. You also had a strange concept of off grid and asked if the off grid accommodation had a microwave! I'm not sure that an off grid hut, on a farm on Exmoor was really for you.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Second time staying here this summer, great little site. Free to choose your own spot, main field is a little sloped but no issues finding a flat spot to parkup. Very quiet site on a working farm, owners are super friendly and helpful but the best feature are the toilet and shower facilities 6 or 7 individual combined shower, toilet, basin cubicles with heating. Washing machine, fridge, freezer and towel drying facilities all on site. This is a working farm so there are chickens, pigs, sheep, etc. Will be back again next season. Highly recommended.

Disliked: Not much to dislike, again the main field is a little sloped, the side field is flatter and great for campervans, remember to pack a torch!

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The site was wonderful. The toilets were clean, showers were a good size. We stayed in a field where sheep roamed free, which we thought was great. Great open space. Great for children. We were able to visit the animals which was great. Lots of nice space great scenery. Will visit again.

Disliked: No problem with site however be prepared to drive a while if you wish to visit local towns, beaches, shops etc.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, it's much appreciated :) It's lovely to hear you enjoyed your stay here and seeing all the animals, especially your sheep neighbours whilst camping. You are correct, due to our beautiful scenic location you do have to drive depending on what day out you are after. Luckily we do have a couple of family attractions minutes down the road such as Exmoor zoo and Combe Martin Dinosaur and wildlife park which are great to visit, along with a lovely farm shop that sells local produce. Thanks again for your review and we hope to see you all again in the future!

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Loads of space for the kids to run around and play, the only activities were feeding the animals in the mornings, but this was brilliant for the kids, this is a back to basics camp site which gives you quality time with the family for reasonable price staff super friendly. The shower units were amazing, kept clean at all times. Ideal campsite for a relaxing week or weekends nice and peaceful and lovely fresh meat provided by the farmers. We will definitely be staying again as a family.

Disliked: NONE AT ALL

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review! it's nice to hear the children enjoyed the animals on the farm. Although we do not offer alternative activities on the farm, we are fortunate to live close to some lovely days out for all the family. Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very friendly and easy going host who spent time showing me around. Lots of clean facilities to go round. I parked my camper van on hard standing outside the shower block which was great for the one night I was there but if I return I would chose the field for the views. Loved that you could walk to the reservoir from the farm if you wished. Also you can help yourself to eggs, sausages and burgers from the honesty box. It was a delight to see children being shown the animals in the morning and my neighbour, the pig, was lovely. The site is a great base for beaches, coast path walks or exploring Exmoor.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, it's very much appreciated :) it's lovely to be able to walk from the farm to the reservoir to save the drive, a beautiful walk indeed. I am glad Ian (the boar) was a good neighbour during your stay here too.

Local attractions

Weeks' worth of adventures and attractions start in two directions from the farm: Blackmore Gate and the entrance to Exmoor National Park are under a mile to the north west, and spectacular north Devon beaches, surfing and other watersports are accessible from Combe Martin and beyond, 10 minutes' drive away. The kids will probably clamour for the beach first, so take them to the three splendid Victorian seaside towns close by: Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and Woolacombe (possibly have a separate day for each as there's loads to see and do). At Combe Martin, the dino express, animatronic dinosaurs, meerkats and animal experiences of Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park should prove a monster hit; Ilfracombe is particularly famed for its Tunnels beaches and its harbour, and Woolacombe is the most famed north Devon spot for surfing. And then to Exmoor… access it within walking distance to stride off over the moor, or drive in to reach the closest information centre, Lynmouth (15 minutes), and gather armfuls on info on Exmoor's hiking, horse riding, events, wildlife and towns and villages. In the other direction from the park, it's a mile's walk to the boating, birdwatching, trout fishing and nature spotting of Wistlandpound reservoir, and 15 minutes' drive to a day's shopping and sightseeing at Barnstaple. The team also recommends Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (10 minutes), and, further afield at 45 minutes, the famed RHS gardens at Rosemoor.
