General

  • Quiet site with lots of space on a working farm: campfires allowed
  • On the edge of Exmoor National Park 10 minutes' drive from the beach
  • Visit the farm animals and gather freshly laid eggs for breakfast

Venture towards Devon's north coast for splendid stays on a working farm, on the edge of Exmoor National Park and 10 minutes' drive from the nearest beach at Combe Martin.

Westland Farm is a small working farm in north Devon, half a mile from Blackmoor Gate and well placed for days roaming around the moor or adventuring and surfing around the coast: Ilfracombe and Woolacombe are 20 and 25 minutes' drive away.

The farm's mission is to offer back-to-basics stays with plenty of space, where guests can sit by a campfire outside their tent, beer in hand, to watch the night sky. For junior guests, there's loads of green space to run around in, as well as farm animals to meet and say hi to: guests are also welcome to gather the farm hens' freshly laid eggs for breakfast.

Although this is old-school camping, Westland Farm doesn't skimp on the amenities: a well-equipped, clean and heated toilet and shower block is to hand for guests, and there are electric points to charge phones in the laundry room.

The farm is half a mile from its local pub, which serves food all day.

Friendly and helpful hosts. Wonderful shower and toilet block with unlimited hot showers and heated towel rails 24/7!! Washing machine and tumble dryer and fresh eggs often available in the mornings to buy. Nikki encourages children to come up to visit the barn between 9-10am each day where she will talk about the animals and let you see if the hens have laid any eggs, and our two were allowed to hold baby chicks too! Pigs, sheep, cows, horses and a lovely farm dog called "Tug"! Got a good flat pitch with a pretty view over the reservoir and the glamping shepherd's huts.

    Disliked:

Maybe needs a sign on the drive showing which entrance is for campers and which is for the B n B guests.

Maybe needs a blackboard outside the shower block to give daily weather forecasts so campers can have advance warning of any inclement weather before it hits!

Lovely site. Area is beautiful and the owners are friendly and incredibly helpful. Showers and toilets were always clean, and there was plenty of space for everyone to maintain social distancing. Disinfectant was also provided to use after every use of the toilet/shower block.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review us. We try to keep a relaxed approach and not add too many signs, as one quickly leads to another and before you know it, there are signs and rules everywhere! All guests are supplied with a mobile number they are told they are welcome to ring anytime if they have any questions. Most people who can't find their way to the house will phone and ask where they should head to.

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely review. I'm really glad you liked it here and liked our heated washrooms and toilets.

Sorry to hear you found the grass to long. As we have no specially marked out pitches we would have to mow the whole of the camping field, which we feel would spoil the back to nature feel of Westland Farm.

The campsite is in a beautiful and quiet location, with views across fields and through to a reservoir. It is also situated on a family farm with sheep and a few pigs. The camping fields are well equipped with water taps close to the pitches, and the water itself is particularly refreshing and makes a great cuppa! There is a shower and toilet block, complete with hot and high-quality showers and clean and spacious toilets, and there is also a fridge freezer for storing food and drinks and also purchasing local produce like eggs and pork. Would definitely recommend and revisit this campsite!

Local attractions

Weeks' worth of adventures and attractions start in two directions from the farm: Blackmore Gate and the entrance to Exmoor National Park are under a mile to the north west, and spectacular north Devon beaches, surfing and other watersports are accessible from Combe Martin and beyond, 10 minutes' drive away.

The kids will probably clamour for the beach first, so take them to the three splendid Victorian seaside towns close by: Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and Woolacombe (possibly have a separate day for each as there's loads to see and do). At Combe Martin, the dino express, animatronic dinosaurs, meerkats and animal experiences of Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park should prove a monster hit; Ilfracombe is particularly famed for its Tunnels beaches and its harbour, and Woolacombe is the most famed north Devon spot for surfing.

And then to Exmoor… access it within walking distance to stride off over the moor, or drive in to reach the closest information centre, Lynmouth (15 minutes), and gather armfuls on info on Exmoor's hiking, horse riding, events, wildlife and towns and villages.

In the other direction from the park, it's a mile's walk to the boating, birdwatching, trout fishing and nature spotting of Wistlandpound reservoir, and 15 minutes' drive to a day's shopping and sightseeing at Barnstaple. The team also recommends Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (10 minutes), and, further afield at 45 minutes, the famed RHS gardens at Rosemoor.
