  • Small off-grid glamping site on a Cornwall smallholding near Camborne
  • Around a 20-minute drive to both coasts; 45 minutes to Land's End
  • Luxury six-metre bell tents with firepit and compost toilets
If you’re planning a Cornwall camping break it’s tempting to be drawn to the coast, but it’s worth remembering that the county’s interior is just as fabulous – or perhaps even better, given that settling somewhere in the middle means equal access to both coastlines? One such splendid spot is Cornish Skies, a small glamping site on a family-run smallholding just outside the tiny village of Troon and 10 minutes’ drive from Camborne. This is a peaceful part of the world, away from the crowds and with plenty of space to take in the rural views. Stay here and you’ll have easy access to historic mining trails and quiet cycle routes, with handy amenities close by too, including the village shop five minutes’ walk away, a pub in the next village and a couple of fish and chip shops within a mile. Camborne’s also got plenty of restaurants, takeaways and shops for keeping everyone fed. Days out are easily achieved here too, as the A30 is close by and both coastlines are within a 20-minute drive. Accommodation on site is in spacious bell tents sleeping up to five people and furnished with a double bed and two singles (plus extra airbeds if needed). This is an eco-friendly and off-grid site but each tent has access to a compost toilet (with hot showers on site too), solar lighting and a single outdoor gas stove. A picnic table, firepit and cool box are provided too, along with a communal area that’s got a camping stove, barbecue, utensils and various pots and pans. There's also another undercover canopy with gas barbecues and seating.

Annabelle bell tent

Liked: The site was perfect for our little holiday. Great location and with beaches close by. The site was excellent and incredibly clean and well thought out. The tent was very spacious and comfortable, with an airer and camping chairs provided, along with all crockery and even towels! The shared kitchen was super. The hosts really have thought of everything you might need and the gas BBQ was an excellent idea. (sadly we didn't have the weather to use it). Amanada and Simon are lovely hosts and really do ensure that everything is OK. Not a dislike (there was nothing to dislike) but a possible suggestions When the weather is poor or even really hot, there is no where to sit outside under cover. Although the kitchen is undercover, you then need to carry your food back to the tent in the rain so you can eat. The mattress protectors are very slippy and we had to keep putting them and the sheet back on the bed.

Bluebelle bell tent

Liked: After returning from a memorable 5 night stay here, the hosts were welcoming and ensured we had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable, the fire pit was a huge plus for us, it was lovely to sit round in the evening as a family and discuss our day and make plans for the next. Everything was kept well and clean and the communal kitchen was a lovely addition which we got a fair bit of use out of. Highly recommend Cornish Skies, it is set in beautiful area, with lots of walks and a mining trail a short distance away. And if you want the beach there are many within a short drive. Well stocked local shop and a short drive into Camborne itself for anything else we needed. Cornish Skies is at the top of our list of stays next time we visit Cornwall.

Local attractions

Staying with your inland setting, you might like to spend the day trying out all the watersports at Stithians Lake (10 minutes’ drive), take a heritage ride on Helston Railway (15 minutes) or seek out more of the past at places like Cornwall Gold and Tolgus Mill (15 minutes). The National Trust gardens at Godolphin House (20 minutes) are lovely to wander around too, and it’s not far to places like the Eden Project and Lost Gardens Heligan (both an hour). To the coast next? Head north to Portreath beach (15 minutes) or St Ives and Carbis Bay (half an hour), or aim south to get to Porthleven and Praa Sands (25 minutes). Going all the way west to Land’s End (45 minutes) is also a popular option of course. Getting out to wherever you choose should be pretty straightforward, whether you choose to drive the nearby A30, use the bus stop five minutes’ walk away or travel via train from Camborne.
