  • Family-run campsite in the small village of Gwithian
  • Under a mile from the South West Coast Path; Hayle four miles
  • Utility corner with charging facilities and a communal fridge
It's got sand, it's got a pub, it's got rockpools and it's got surfing – all in all, Gwithian's a pretty groovy spot. Set in a quiet part of the village under a mile from the beach and the South West Coast Path, Prosper House Camping is a family-run campsite close to some of the best bits of Cornwall's north coast. Prosper House Camping is a laidback, no-frills site, where a small number of pitches creates a chilled, intimate atmosphere. Toilets and hot showers are provided, as well as a small utilities corner with handy charging facilities and a communal fridge that guests are free to use. Although the views here look out over surrounding farmland, Prosper House Camping is under 100 feet from the village pub and 20 minutes' walk from two popular seaside cafés. There's decent public transport here too, with buses that can get you into Hayle in roughly 20 minutes for when you need a supermarket, railway station or just fancy a change of scene. Since opening in 2016, Prosper House Camping has had lots of satisfied customers, with some guests coming back year after year. If you like old-style camping in peaceful grounds where the kids can play freely and you can huddle around a firepit in the evening, this could be the place for you.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: The location a short walk to be on the sand dunes and a walk down to the beach. The size of the campsite -not too big but with good size pitches with benches available and also the facilities. The hut with the shared use of a kettle, Fridge/freezer and power to be able to store food and charge up a phone is a much appreciated bonus. This has been out second time staying and I am sure we will return again.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: I like the fact I only booked 2 nights.

Disliked: Not worth 25 a night for 1 person. Pitches were so close I could hear my neighbours breathing. Awkward for a solo traveller. Can see houses all round and hear noise from the pub. Everything that drew me to the camp turned out to be good advertising and not a truth. No coffee van, no one selling firewood and definitely not a short walk to the beach. It took ages. This is not camping. It's sleeping in someones garden.

From the manager: Sorry you didn't have the best stay with us and felt the ned to leave a poor review. I would dispute many of your comments though. The site is literally advertised as being within the village and being 100 feet from a pub so I'm not sure why you were surprised that you could see houses. The site has fields on one side and houses on the other and there are numerous photos on the listing that show houses in the background. The pitches are 10m by 10m which is larger than a lot of campsites, and as with most sites the pitches are adjacent to each other so being able to see and hear your neighbours is part of camping. We have expended a lot of time and effort in creating the wild grass and flower boundaries to the pitches to give our guests some privacy and indeed this is highlighted in many of our reviews. We don't advertise a coffee van or that we sell firewood so these things can't have drawn you to the campsite. Once guests have booked I do send an email that mentions that my twelve year old son sells croissants and coffee some mornings and also is available to sell wood. He didn't sell croissants this Saturday as he normally would as it was raining heavily and he can't operate a coffee machine in the pouring rain! He was available for firewood but you weren't on your pitch when he did his rounds so you would have needed to come and knock on the door of our house, as indicated on the signs in the communal areas! As for the short walk to the beach, that is of course subjective. It takes fewer than 5 minutes at normal walking pace to get to the dunes and then another 5-10 minutes over the dunes to the beach itself, depending which route you take. I can't comment on which way you went or how long it took as you don't say, but most of our returning guests book year after year precisely because they love the location. So sorry to hear that we weren't for you. We can't please everyone of course, but we are proud of the site we have created and our many glowing reviews and returning customers are testament to that.

Liked: Everything.. location pub and beach and coastal path on the doorstep . Electric kettle and use of fridge and charging points for devices so helpful . Facilities clean and very adequate for size of site. Very quiet site for people who like a peaceful traditional camping but use of electric kettle and fridges made life so much easier !

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely camping pitches, friendly atmosphere, quiet evening though it's next to a country lane. Pub just outside the field and close to get to maybe touristy attractions by car. They also had fridge and freezer, plug sockets for charging phones and a kettle. Lots to do round the area, farm shop and fruit picking, beach a short walk away and only 20 mins from st ives and perranport .Great little stay.

Disliked: Wouldn't put us off visiting again we had a great experience, but the toilets are more like little sheds not a block so a little more rustic. It had no signal or WiFi so finding locations ect was a little bit harder.

From the manager: Thanks for a lovely review and glad you enjoyed yourselves! Cheers, Ruth

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: The campsite was brilliant. The layout was clear and functional. The toilets and wash area were clean and nice. Everyone was really nice and we made friends with the chickens. It’s a 2 minute walk to the pub (which has food as well as drinks) and 5 minutes from the beach. We had a really nice time and would definitely come back.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: This campsite is a little gem. A beautiful wild meadow with the pitches mown out of the grass. It’s clean, basic, outdoorsy and delightful. There is storage for food and, thoughtfully, a kettle has been put out for those travelling light who would like to make a hot drink or cup a soup after a long day walking the coastal path. It is a couple of minutes walk from a popular little pub that does food and 10 minutes walk to the sand dunes and long stretch of beach at Godrevy. I will definitely be staying again.

Disliked: If you could just turn down the volume on the rooks of an evening that would be great, thanks!

From the manager: Thank you for a lovely review, it's much appreciated! I will have a word with the rooks!

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Situated right in the centre of the village in walking distance of a lovely pub and near to Godrevy.

Disliked: I didnt meet the people running the site and it was hard to get hold of them when I arrived. Mobile signal is patchy so calling and texting wasn’t great and there was no answer at the house so it was an unsure start and as a lone traveller I didnt feel reassured.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Sorry you didn't have the best experience with us. It's a shame you felt you needed to give such a poor rating for some things. We don't offer Wifi, for the pure and simple reason that there isn't enough Wifi capacity for the village as a whole! The pub next door has free Wifi which they are very happy for campers to use, but at busy times even their service struggles. As a result we don't advertise or offer Wifi, so it's a little irritating to be rated for something that we don't offer! Sorry you felt the customer service was poor. We send a detailed email on booking which contains really precise directions and instructions for what to do on checking in. This information is repeated on a sign at the campsite gate and we make it really clear that people can just pitch up without needing to find us. Unfortunately we can't be in the house 24 hours a day as we both have other jobs and a family to run, so we try to make the arrival instructions as clear as possible, and indeed most of our campers have no problems on arrival. We are always available by phone and indeed your text and email on arrival were responded to within minutes. When we spoke on the phone a few minutes later you seemed happy with everything. As we live on site we are available most of the time, but as with any site, there will always be periods where reception is unmanned! It's a shame indeed that the mobile signal isn't brilliant but that is something we obviously have little control over. When we know that guests are travelling alone, we usually let them know that the site will be quiet when they arrive, but as your booking was made for two adults and two dogs, we weren't aware that you would be arriving alone. Again, sorry that you weren't satisfied. Your comments and rating are in stark contrast to the majority of reviewers who comment on the friendly customer service.
