Prosper House Camping: Surrounded by fields

General

  • Family-run campsite in the small village of Gwithian
  • Under a mile from the South West Coast Path; Hayle four miles
  • Utility corner with charging facilities and a communal fridge

It's got sand, it's got a pub, it's got rockpools and it's got surfing – all in all, Gwithian's a pretty groovy spot. Set in a quiet part of the village under a mile from the beach and the South West Coast Path, Prosper House Camping is a family-run campsite close to some of the best bits of Cornwall's north coast.

Prosper House Camping is a laidback, no-frills site, where a small number of pitches creates a chilled, intimate atmosphere. Toilets and hot showers are provided, as well as a small utilities corner with handy charging facilities and a communal fridge that guests are free to use.

Although the views here look out over surrounding farmland, Prosper House Camping is under 100 feet from the village pub and 20 minutes' walk from two popular seaside cafés. There's decent public transport here too, with buses that can get you into Hayle in roughly 20 minutes for when you need a supermarket, railway station or just fancy a change of scene.

Since opening in 2016, Prosper House Camping has had lots of satisfied customers, with some guests coming back year after year. If you like old-style camping in peaceful grounds where the kids can play freely and you can huddle around a firepit in the evening, this could be the place for you.

Love the location, the pitches were very big and it was good to be able to use a charging point. There is a bus service to st Ives which stops in hayle which we used and took under an hour. The walk to the beach was under 10mins which was fantastic. We would definitely return for a short stay!

    Disliked:

The toilets weren’t cleaned very regularly and the showers didn’t have a light so that was tricky. Pitch up states there is cycle hire near by but nothing that was in walking distance which was disappointing as the local surf school website does advertise it.

A lovely relaxed, almost wild camping experience but the road busy.23/09/2022

The relaxed, wildlife friendly large pitches.

    Disliked:

The road noise and slightly challenging walk down the busy lane to the beach.
The facilities are very basic and the toilets weren’t cleaned whilst we were there, although the site wasn’t busy so not a huge problem.

From the manager...

Thanks for leaving a review. We specifically market ourselves as being a really rustic site with basic but clean facilities and super hot showers. I'm really surprised that your perception is that the loos weren't cleaned during your stay. I clean them myself at 6.30 am each day, so it's quite likely that you wouldn't have seen us clean as it is very early! As you say, the site is quiet at the moment, so whereas in summer they are cleaned again at lunchtime and again in the evening, we just check them later in the day when the site is very quiet. Obviously in this weather, it's hard to keep the floors completely clean as as soon as they are cleaned, they do get muddy again as the next person goes in. However, we pride ourselves on keeping the loos as clean as possible and we are sorry that you were disappointed in this.

Beautiful long meadow grass between pitches. Pick nick tables on every pitch. Relaxed feel. Close to the beach. Clean hot showers. Chickens!

    Disliked:

Only cold water available for washing up. A hot water tap would be a useful addition.

From the manager...

Hi Emily,
thanks for your lovely review and we're really glad you had a good time with us. Unfortunately we can't add hot water for washing up as we have no way of supplying it to that area without adding another gas heater which isn't practical there I'm afraid. We have minimal power to the site so the only way of heating water is via gas like the shower units, and there isn't a mini version!
We'd love to see you again if you're back in Cornwall.

Cheers,

Ruth

Loved my stay at the Prosper House Camping. The place is super cosy and clean. Good location with short distance to beach, and short enough distance drive to other places such as Penzance, St Ives, Portreath and even Newquay! There's a pub very close by and Lidl not far off (about 5-10 mins drive). During my stay I had no connection to the wifi or signal, however, it did not bothered me. Will defiantly come back. Also, felt safe as a solo female traveller.
