General

  • Flat level grass pitches with easy access from the A30
  • A mile from an award-winning surfing beach; free shuttle available
  • Adventure play area, swings, shop and games room

Small and friendly, family run and a mere mile from the first-rate Cornish beach of Porthtowan… this is a peaceful and well located place for Cornwall breaks.

Porthtowan Tourist Park is in a quiet countryside setting, on the edge of Porthtowan village surrounded by fields and country lanes – but is only a couple of miles from the A30 and has easy access to Truro, Portreath, Tehidy Country Park and the South West Coast Path.

This is an award-winning park, with modern facilities maintained to a high standard. There's a games room and adventure play area for leisurely times indoors or out; a tourist information room for plotting your next Cornish stopoff, and a food shop open daily – you'll be chuffed to hear that barbecues are allowed on site too.

Among the well-kept amenities are a launderette, a washing-up area and a disabled-friendly toilet and shower block.

Dogs are welcome on site.

Great camping site with very friendly and accommodating owners, nothing was too much trouble. Showers, toilets and washing up areas were very clean, light and airy. The site was extremely quiet and there was a great play area for the children which and the rules were they couldnt play in the area after dark.

    Disliked:

non really, I did miss a camp fire and also maybe a good coffee machine in the shop would be a nice to accompany the freshly baked sausage rolls.

An excellent touring park, clean facilities and well spaced pitches. We tented for a week with hook-up (2x adults, 1x 7yo, 1x jack russell dog). Due to the park's location it is very quiet, with virtually no road noise, therefore early morning crows and seagulls, but it still left you feeling very tucked away.
The clue is in the name "tourist" as it is great for touring and within easy drives for Perranporth, Newquay St.Ives, Truro etc. It is within walking distance of Porthtowan beach, but the site operates a FREE minibus to the beach and back everyday!!!!!!
We found one of the best features was that there were no static caravans onsite.
The park has a vehicular security gate and is shut between 11pm-8am and key fob controlled entry at other times, nice and secure.
Facilities are site are suitable for the size of the park, I never needed to queue for showers/toilets/pot wash/wetsuit wash. Again, all very clean and modern. There are also family and disabled shower/ toilet rooms. On site shop that offers iceblock hire (£2.50 refundable deposit, 25p per block). Kid's adventure playground and small play field and dog walk top it all off. Wifi is chargeable and we can't rate as we didn't use it. (£10 for 2 devices for 4 days if I remember correctly)
The owners gave us a very warm welcome on arrival and nothing seemed too much trouble, even baking sausage rolls after closing time and hand delivering to our pitch!!
Our family definitely agree we will return in the future.

    Disliked:

Not really a dislike but....no scooters/skates/bikes etc during school holidays, our 7yo was very disappointed. I can see it's for safety as there might be increased traffic in high season but there didn't seem to be last week. And finally, no reflection on the site or owners as they cannot be held accountable for the attitudes of their guests onsite but some caravanning guests really really do need to get a grip and refrain from sucking the joy out of life, may your route home be forever full of traffic.

Location, facilities, atmosphere, cleanliness, great customer service and the attention to detail by the owners and colleagues in ensuring our stay was the best possible. Will definately visit this site again. Also worth noting this is great location not far from the beach, great walks, short driving distance to two great towns Newquay and St Ives.

The site was well maintained with good flat pitches. The shower and toilet block was very clean and tidy. I liked the addition of privacy cubicles in the ladies, (nicer than having to stand in a row at the same sink to clean your teeth as I have to at some sites! ) The dishwashing facilities were clean too. There was a good laundry room, but I didn't have need to use it. The staff were very friendly and always smiling despite being busy. There was excellent mobile phone and data service on site, which surprised me as we have rarely had good phone service whilst camping in Cornwall and almost always had to pay for WiFi when available. We were pleased that there was good recycling facilities. The local area is lovely too.We have already booked into the site for later in the year.

    Disliked:

People loudly playing football at the tents after 9pm, it was school holiday time, but think this should be confined to the play area.

Directions

Driving westbound on the A30, when you reach the Chiverton Cross roundabout, take the third exit onto another small roundabout and again take the third exit, direction St Agnes. After one and a half miles turn left at the crossroads by Sevenmilestone garage. Follow the coastal road just over two miles, then at the bottom of the hill go past the sign for the village and beach and continue up the hill. You will see the campsite after half a mile, on your right just after the small crossroads.

Caravans and towing route: westbound on the A30, pass the Chiverton Cross roundabout and the Falmouth exit, taking the slip road signposted "Redruth/Portreath/Porthtowan". Take the third exit from the roundabout and continue on a winding road for 2 miles into the valley. At the T-junction turn right and you will find us on your left at the top of the hill.

Local attractions

Stick to the north coast area, venture inland, or head down to Falmouth and the south coast, all within easy driving distance of here.

Within walking distance, the beach of Porthtowan is a popular spot for surfers and families, with plenty of rockpools and caves to explore around its scenic wide stretch of sand. The site is also a short walk from the South West Coast Path – hike the up and down trail to Portreath four or so miles west – and near the Mineral Tramways trail, 14 mostly traffic-free miles from Portreath to Devoran down on the south coast near Falmouth.

Shops, restaurants, bars and river boat trips are all at Truro a few miles away; also take time to see the museum, and, if you're around on Wednesday or Saturday, to mooch around the Truro farmers' market on Lemon Quay.

Gardens? Several are in the area, with the National Trust's Trerice and Glendurgan the closest to the site. Or gold? Take a trip to Cornwall Gold Centre on the Portreath Road, to pan for gold, have a go at pottery, or just look significantly at your significant other over the gold, silver and pearl jewellery for sale.

For family cycling or walking, Tehidy Country Park just outside Portreath is flat and buggy-friendly, and leads out to spectacular views for smashing picnics. More actively, try SK8 Skate Park and The Track, Sithians Lake for watersports and Camel Creek Adventure Park at Wadebridge.

Must see

  • Cornwall Industrial Discovery Centre (3.4 miles)
  • Truro Cathedral (8.3 miles)
  • Lappa Valley Steam Railway (10.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Cornish Mines and Engines (3.4 miles)
  • Godrevy (7.3 miles)
