Porthtowan Tourist Park: 5

General

  • Flat level grass pitches with easy access from the A30
  • A mile from the surfing beach of Porthtowan
  • Adventure play area, swings, shop and games room

Small and friendly, family run and a mere mile from the first-rate Cornish beach of Porthtowan… this is a peaceful and well located place for Cornwall breaks.

Porthtowan Tourist Park is in a quiet countryside setting, on the edge of Porthtowan village surrounded by fields and country lanes – but is only a couple of miles from the A30 and has easy access to Truro, Portreath, Tehidy Country Park and the South West Coast Path.

This is an award-winning park, with modern facilities maintained to a high standard. There's a games room and adventure play area for leisurely times indoors or out; a tourist information room for plotting your next Cornish stopoff, and a food shop open daily – you'll be chuffed to hear that barbecues are allowed on site too...

Among the well-kept amenities are a launderette, a washing-up area and a disabled-friendly toilet and shower block.

Dogs are welcome on site.

We will be going back! Such a great campsite, its family run and they are just so friendly and the rest of the team are great!
On site it has a toilet and shower block near the entrance, depending on where you are this can be a little walk but that just comes with camping. The toilet and showering facilities were very clean and kept to a high standard. The showers were lovely and the cubicles were large enough to keep your belongings dry. Which also made changing also easy.
The sight is secure with a scanned access to gain entry. It is very family orientated with a games room, outside park area to play and plenty of areas for them to ride their bike.
The plots were nice and big - we have a tailgate tent so we always need to make sure we have enough space. Each plot was set up with the tent or caravan to the left of the plot and tent and sitting area to the right so that each plot could be private.
The grassy areas are all very well maintained as well as the shrubbery etc. Whilst we were there they had a local pizza van come to site so we were able to get some great pizza - they also did gluten free.
The site was a 20-30 minute walk to the beach of Porthtowan - there was plenty of things to do of either walking, swimming, body boarding. Its local amenities are also good.

I hope this review helps you to make an informed decision to stay at this campsite. We loved it!

Everything about this site is wonderful, we have stayed twice and could not find fault with anything.
The whole site is immaculately kept and well thought out.
The owners are lovely, genuine people, and always ready to help out (including lending us two of their own chairs when we forgot ours!)
We especially like that we can walk down to the beach, and have a few drinks at the bars there, then get a taxi back up the hill!
We love Flour Power pizza that visits the site in high season. Absolutely delicious. If you're vegan, also check out Nature's Treats shop down towards the beach (near the Post Office), loads of great stuff in there!
We'll be back next year :)

Directions

Caravans and towing route: westbound on the A30, pass the Chiverton Cross roundabout and the Falmouth exit, taking the slip road signposted "Redruth/Portreath/Porthtowan". Take the third exit from the roundabout and continue on a winding road for 2 miles into the valley. At the T-junction turn right and you will find us on your left at the top of the hill.

Local attractions

Stick to the north coast area, venture inland, or head down to Falmouth and the south coast, all within easy driving distance of here.

Within walking distance, the beach of Porthtowan is a popular spot for surfers and families, with plenty of rockpools and caves to explore around its scenic wide stretch of sand. The site is also a short walk from the South West Coast Path – hike the up and down trail to Portreath four or so miles west – and near the Mineral Tramways trail, 14 mostly traffic-free miles from Portreath to Devoran down on the south coast near Falmouth.

Shops, restaurants, bars and river boat trips are all at Truro a few miles away; also take time to see the museum, and, if you're around on Wednesday or Saturday, to mooch around the Truro farmers' market on Lemon Quay.

Gardens? Several are in the area, with the National Trust's Trerice and Glendurgan the closest to the site. Or gold? Take a trip to Cornwall Gold Centre on the Portreath Road, to pan for gold, have a go at pottery, or just look significantly at your significant other over the gold, silver and pearl jewellery for sale.

For family cycling or walking, Tehidy Country Park just outside Portreath is flat and buggy-friendly, and leads out to spectacular views for smashing picnics. More actively, try SK8 Skate Park and The Track, Sithians Lake for watersports and Camel Creek Adventure Park at Wadebridge.

Must see

  • Cornwall Industrial Discovery Centre (5.5 kilometres)
  • Truro Cathedral (13.3 kilometres)
  • Lappa Valley Steam Railway (17.1 kilometres)
