Allet Farm: The pitch area

General

  • Pop-up camping field on a Cornish farm near Truro and Perranporth
  • A 20-minute drive from Newquay’s zoo and Fistral surfing beach
  • Wild camping close to a cider farm, pubs, shops and animal sanctuaries

Allet Farm’s wild camping field is set on a working farm near Truro in Cornwall, with cows and Shetland ponies grazing peacefully in neighbouring fields. This is a smashing, pop-up base for surfers (close to north-coast beaches) and families with curious kids (lots of wildlife attractions).

For starters, the site owners are happy to show anyone around the farm and introduce their animals, and within 40 minutes, you can treat the children to close-up encounters at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.

Visits to Newquay Zoo and the Screech Owl Sanctuary (both 20 minutes’ drive) are on the cards too, and you can let younger kids run around in safe play areas at Lappa Valley (15 minutes) to tire them out too.

Now about those surfing spots: Newquay’s famed Fistral beach is a 20-minute drive away. Expert or complete surfing rookie? It doesn’t matter here, as you can hire boards, take lessons or simply jump on a wave. Trips to Perranporth (10 minutes) and Chapel Porth (15 minutes) beaches should be on your itinerary too.

Back on site, simple amenities include a loo block, washing-up area and a communal fridge – and wifi is available in some places. As well as cider farm (yay – tasting available) and ice-cream parlour (another score for the kids), there’s a family-friendly pub in Shortlanesend village (five minutes), and a local store where you can pick up essentials.

Quiet, clean, with friendly owners. Full kitchen which has no hot water but you can boil a supplied kettle for washing up. There’s a fridge freezer so you can chill wine and ice blocks. 2 showers and a further separate loo are enough as 6 pitches in pitch up field and similar in the club field. You can’t park your car next to tent except to pack up and unload but the parking is very close and it was nice not to have cars. Owners helpful with advice on which site to pitch on based on the weather. We had a lovely stay. I

    Disliked:

Not masses of space between the 6 pitches - I thought it said 4 on the advert which would have been fine - but it was very quiet when we stayed so it didn’t matter. If full you might feel on top of each other.

Loved this friendly farm in the heart of Cornwall. Peaceful location but easy to reach beaches, towns and historic sites.
We was greeted on arrival, given the site tour and had a pitch next to our friends tent. We took our teenage boys and our friends had their family who loved visiting the farm animals and the owner was happy to give a tour and answer questions from our children.
We made good use of the kitchen studio for playing games in the evening whilst having a cuppa tea and putting our pack up for the next day in the fridge freezer. There was a few families on site but it was easy to use the showers and toilets both in the morning and evening. Plenty of parking and camping space.
If you want a quite, county setting and simple camp, then this is for you. We travelled around many amazing places from this base and the owners gave us some great ideas of places to go which made our trip even better!
Also, very grateful for all the help in getting our friends car started after the battery died after it was all packed up to go! (Although, sure it was a plot to stay another day by our friends ha ha).
Fabulous hosts and clean site. Relaxing, fun packed holiday.
We will definitely be booking for next year again.

    Disliked:

Limited opening during the year. We would love to come at other times as well as August.

Peaceful! It’s a fantastic location for visiting Cornwall. We managed Perranporth, Lands End, Lizard point, Newquay, Mevagissey, St Austell, Padstow and St Ives. None were more than an hours drive with holiday traffic too.

Recommend St Erth park and ride train to St Ives. Beautiful coastal line and no worrying about parking.

The cabin is awesome. We have camped for years and this year treated ourselves to glamping. It’s got everything you need and more. Even in the 30* heat the windows supplied a lovely breeze.

We had tea, coffee, sugar, milk and biscuits on arrival. Which was much needed and appreciated!

    The WiFi was great too.

The owners were lovely, even when we got lost they gave us perfect directions. Two showers and 3 toilets which were always very clean. Fantastic kitchen with two tables with chairs, charging facilities, fridge/freezer microwave and kettle. The site was very peaceful and we loved no cars on the pitches which made us feel safer with a 2 year old running around. Would definitely re book.
