Canna Farm: Canna Farm view

General

  • Off-grid eco site in Cornwall, 15 minutes' drive from the coast
  • On the edge of Luxulyan Valley, 10 mins' drive from the Eden Project
  • A 10-minute walk from the Clay Trails walking and cycle paths

Now this one's worth making some noise about… A five-minute drive from the Cornish village of Bugle, Canna Farm is a haven of peace and solitude, close to surf beaches, the famed rainforest biospheres of the Eden Project and tours and tastings at the St Austell Brewery… what more does anyone need?

Perhaps a simple eco-friendly base to see it all from? One with bags of space, hedgerows, stone walls and long grass giving a sense of privacy are what you'll get at Canna Farm, along with individual and communal firepits. Have a chat with the folks on site to order in fab local produce plus all the kit you need to get a barbecue on the go.

The farm is in a canny location for getting out and about around Cornwall too: it's a 10-minute stroll from here to join the Clay Trails, a network of routes linking mid-Cornwall’s mining heritage with top rural scenery and wildlife, and just on the edge of the rather gorgeous Luxulyan Valley (appointed as a World Heritage Site for its mix of scenery and industrial heritage). It's also five minutes to the A30, giving easy access across the county from Bodmin Moor to Land’s End, and, if using public transport, about the same to catch buses and trains from Bugle.

Bugle's also the place for more eats, drinks and practicalities: there’s a symphony of useful stuff here including a shop, a pub with food, a fish and chip shop and a Chinese takeaway.

very reasonable price and in a countryside setting great if your just looking for a field to pitch your tent

    Disliked:

Difficult to find in the middle of nowhere, no mains water just a water butt for getting water, 1 yes 1 single compost toilet for 2 fields (hole in the ground with a seat) and a single shower in a wooden hut. Only stayed 1 night and moved to a proper site next day. Would not recommend unless you have your own toilet it was disgusting .

From the manager...

Hi Jim, We are an off grid campsite that tries to have as little impact on the environment as possible. If you had read anything about the site before booking, you would have known this as it’s all revealed, no secret! If you were expecting anything other than what we have to offer, it’s because of your own lack of research.
The literature about the site and certain reviews indicate that we have a compost loo, those and the photos! Just in case anyone else needs a sneaky preview of the facilities!
Did you know that most toilets built in the 80s and 90s use, on average, between 10 -15 litres of water per flush!
We are not on mains anything, and it really teaches you to not take things for granted as all resources are valuable, and not just in a monetary term.
Our low impact ethos generally attracts campers that enjoy nature, as if things continue as they are, there won’t be much to enjoy!
The compost loo, incidentally, is not a hole in the ground. It is serviced twice daily to empty and completely disinfected, with sanitiser provided to utilise before and after use. If it were a hole in the ground, it would make my life a whole lot easier!
There is also a urinal provided next to the compost loo, which together, do just fine to service the whole 12 pitches on site!
The shower is universally loved. You didn’t try it, so you missed out there on steaming hot water in a luxurious space!
Canna Farm Campsite when tapped into google will bring up maps, take you straight to gate on Sat Nav and if you’re old Skool, we are also literally on Ordinance Survey maps! Any difficulty in finding us is only down, again, to lack of research.
Hope you enjoyed your ‘proper’ Campsite - maybe your toilet flush caught up with you swimming in the sea, overflowing into the rivers, or you may have even enjoyed particulates in that delicious seafood you sought to find....

From the manager...

Hi Adam,
I am genuinely sorry that you clearly didn’t enjoy your stay. We try our hardest to make our visitors welcome. However, I am going to spin this review slightly on its head. I’m going to rate you as visitors on this occasion. For those of you who are going to toil through this, it may take some time.
So, you arrived around quarter past nine in the evening, it being September, it was very much dark. Generally people who are going to arrive a little later than norm message us to say so, and we endeavour to help them out. Anyway, you didn’t, you also didn’t call or message to say that you had arrived. It is asked that you do so by both Pitchup and the detailed welcome info that is sent to you. I did, however, know that you’d arrived because I heard you! Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve had motorbikes all my life, my other half has had motorbikes all his life, absolutely no problem with motorbikes – unless you come in reasonably late and rev the b-Jesus out of them. I really don’t know if it was lack of self awareness or what.
So, it starts there. We’re laid back people. It’s reasonably quiet at the moment and so I actively encourage people to pick the pitch they would like themselves rather than dictate. So you roared up the road, roared in, revved for an inconceivable amount of time and eventually picked a pitch in the top field near to the entrance (bearing in mind the first half of the field you come into was empty, fine.) Then you decided, for what reason I can’t fathom, to move down to the bottom of the second field, that isn’t even a designated pitch (as it’s pretty hilly.) So, motorbikes revving hugely again to move! Then it quietened down, so I thought that was it. Then at 22:20 you decided to go out again! This would have been reasonably ok if you’d picked a pitch (any pitch from 1-5 that was vacant!) vaguely near the entrance, but no, you’d actually gone to literally the furthest point away from the gate! Woken up campers that had to be up early - and yes, it was commented on by all that were staying here! It is difficult to keep everybody happy at the best of times, but most of our visitors naturally show consideration to those around.
I had little choice really from this point other than to message you to clearly have to make you aware that there were, in fact, other campers, one with a young child, to take into consideration on your return. Thankfully you did manage to cut your engines coming through the field when you eventually returned. Although, I do wonder if you’d have bothered had it not been mentioned.
The next morning I did attempt some friendly conversation with one of you as you got up just as I was finishing my cleaning rounds and shower duty, but it was a little like drawing blood from a stone, which was fair enough as you’d slept late and only just got up (Lucky you,) I left you to it.
Then I heard you go, so all fine. However! What I didn’t know at the time (as I have a lot to do within visits up the field) is that you hadn’t packed up! So although departure time is at a pretty relaxed Midday, you came back at half one to clear up your tents! To be fair, it wouldn’t normally be a problem, especially as you weren’t actually camped on a pitch, but it would have been at the very least, courteous to drop me a line to ok it.
So, really, at the end of this, I don’t rate you as customers, at all.
NB. Those with motorbikes, cars, bicycles and walkers are ALL actively encouraged to stay, although only those that hold the slightest of regards for those around you!

From the manager...

Hi Carrie,

Glad you enjoyed your stay in the main. Hope you are enjoying your holiday!

For those reading your comments, the shower is open in the morning and in the evening. This is due to being in the middle of a pandemic. I have to attend the showers and clean and disinfect them after every person that uses them. We have found this to work well, but as much as I enjoy cleaning showers for two hours a day, I do have all sorts of other things I need to fit into the day as well! Should someone require a shower outside of these times, we would endeavour to accommodate if notified.

Really liked this site, close to beaches and Fowey.. a natural rustic site with beautiful back drop and tranquility. Beautiful sunsets and constellations.
The owner Nicki is going great guns in adopting 'eco friendly' toilets and showers. Some very simple yet effective ideas going on here..
The two pigs are great to see, helping with those bramble roots and stimulating the land. Nothing was too much trouble. Fire pits and BBQ available to use at very cheap prices. Can't wait to return for longer next year in my camper van. Justine

Compost toilet was interesting the first time but we love the eco-friendly concept which is done really well here. On a whole a peaceful few days away. We will be back.

The owner was so friendly & very helpful! The shower facilities were cleaned between every use & fresh water was always available despite there being no tap. The views are great & there are two nice pubs within walking distance (40 min walk approx) the compost toilet could be an issue for some people but just go in with an open mind & remind yourself you are helping the environment. Would definitely stop again!

Local attractions

Pace yourself and visit the Eden Project more than once for more than one type of adventure: as well as the biodomes to see, there's jumping, swinging, falling and zipwiring all on offer at Eden's Hangloose Adventure. Canna Farm's equally well placed for another major attraction: it's half an hour to the Lost Gardens of Heligan, which are a touching tribute to human endeavours as well as a fab horticultural feature to wander around for hours.

For watersports and more sedate seaside activities, it's a 15-minute drive to Carlyon Bay and St Austell and half an hour to the popular coastal spots of Par Sands and Pentewan beach. For a different perspective on the sea, make for Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre (20 minutes) to see a variety of strange stuff salvaged from the waves.

If it's clifftop hikes and trots along the dunes you're into, link up with the South West Coast Path at Charlestown, or pick it up at Par Sands and walk the wilder spaces of the Polperro Heritage Coast, finishing off with a swim at Readymoney Cove (half an hour by car).

Depending on age and tastes, there's plenty of indoor entertainment on offer as well, from tours and tastings at St Austell Brewery (15 minutes), to meeting the feathered inhabitants of the Screech Owl Sanctuary 20 minutes away near St Columb Major.
