General
- Family-friendly site close to A30 and three miles from Porthtowan
- Next to the Portreath Tramway for walks, cycling and horse riding
- Shop, playground and outdoor pool (heated in summer)
Cornwall was once famed for its mineral mines, but these days its treasures take a somewhat different form. Wheal Rose Caravan Park is surely one of those gems, winning praise from previous guests for its laidback vibe, its facilities and its friendly owners.
This family-friendly park is three miles from Porthtowan and its beach, and runs parallel to the Portreath Tramway: a former miners’ track built to carry wagonloads of tin and gold down to Cornwall’s southern coast, it later became the county’s first railway line and is now a haven for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and history buffs. There's easy access to the coast from here, as well as to Cornish day trips and attractions as the site has good access from the A30.
With hikes and bike rides so close by, you can be excused for delaying your departures and dallying a while back at base… Younger guests have a play area and a small outdoor pool (heated in summer) to keep them busy, next to an outdoor seating area for grownups.
No need to fret about feeding the brood here either, as the on-site summer shop is a stroll away, well-stocked with basics, treats, gas bottles and topped off with a coffee machine. Should you need more substantial supplies, a bakery, farm shop and a supermarket are within a short drive.
The owners take pride in the clean and friendly atmosphere of their park; the modern facilities include toilet blocks with free hot showers, a launderette and a washing-up room.

Amazing family campsite. Best we’ve ever been to.

Thank you for reviewing us. We do really struggle with internet connectivity here, which we keep trying to improve (cost effectively) for customers, but as you found, at busy times there may be little or no signal. We are glad that you still had a relaxing stay with us though and it would be lovely to see you again! |

Thanks for a great rating and review, it is lovely that you enjoyed your stay. It is understandably different at the moment, but in terms of facilities, only the games room, washing machine and tumble dryer remain sadly closed for the season - the shower block and toilets are fully open with enhanced cleaning. As all campsites and holiday parks have and continue to incur significant additional costs to be COVID secure and, like ourselves, have reduced capacity to keep customers safe, it is unlikely that any will be in a position to reduce pitch prices. |

Local attractions
Active families needn’t go far for a fix: just over five minutes’ drive away, Kernow Adventure Park has wakeboarding, inflatable assault courses and paddleboarding, as well as manmade beaches and a café-bar for those who prefer a slower pace.
When you’re ready for real beaches, Porthtowan and Chapel Porth are 15 minutes and half an hour away, with paddles, castles, sandy games of cricket down on the shore, and walks with sky-wide views up top on the South West Coast Path.
If you’re more into riding waves than watching them, surfers’ hotspots like Newlyn and Newquay are 40 minutes away; the latter town tempts landlubbers in too, with fish and chips on the harbour and trips round the zoo and aquarium.
Should you want to dig deeper into the area’s mining heritage, head to Cornwall Gold (10 minutes) to see a working tin mill, try your hand at gold panning in the stream, and watch goldsmiths turning the precious metal into little works of art in their studios. (There’s pottery painting, bear building and miniature golf for those less minerally minded.)
If you fancy wandering round a rainforest, the steamy biospheres of the Eden Project are 40 minutes away, and for a trip that combines horticultural artistry with history, go find the Lost Gardens of Heligan, 50 minutes away.
