General

  • Award-winning 2.5 miles from Perranporth
  • Across 21 acres of colourful Cornish landscape
  • Three fishing lakes, wildlife areas, playground and spotless amenities

A ‘national treasure’ is just one of the many (many) comments from very (very) happy guests of award-winning Perran Springs Holiday Park at Perranporth in Cornwall, of which it might respectfully be suggested that if you, the other half, the kids and the dog don’t have a rollicking good time, you might need to have your camping licence revoked.

Location first: Perran Springs is two and a half miles from the fab and family-friendly beach at Perranporth, five minutes’ drive from Newquay and centrally placed to explore whatever aspect of Cornwall tickles your fancy, from award-winning beaches to art galleries to family days out. It’s spread across 21 acres of a secluded sheltered valley, with the best of Cornish countryside views from the site, and flowers, shrubs and trees blazing colour across it.

And now for activities… gillty of always casting off on hol? The park has three lakes for coarse fishing on a grand scale: the Mayfly, Butterfly and Dragonfly lakes, all stuffed with specimens including tench, bream, rudd, roach and carp of up to 20lb. The site shop sells tackle, rods and other fishing bits and bobs, with angling expert Andrew on hand to give advice. You'll need a permit to fish at the lakes on site which you can collect at reception.

Perran Springs is also a nature conscious park and has set up bits and pieces all over to encourage both local wildlife and curious minds, including a nature pond, nature trail and butterfly, bug and bee garden; look out on and around the site for moths and lizards too. If the kids still need to let off steam, the playground, Fox Recreation Meadow and running around the various open spaces should tire them out nicely.

The park’s award-winning showers and other amenities are kept ‘spotlessly clean’ (another guest accolade) and include dishwashing sinks, a launderette, baby changing room, and an outdoor area for rinsing off your wetsuit.

Finally (woof), even the family canine will be content here, as Perran Springs is dog-friendly and has lots of opps around for walks. The local pub, the New Inn within walking distance at Goonhavern, accepts well-behaved dogs in its beer garden.

All in all, a park to put a definite spring in your step…

OK if you just want too pitch a tent up - expensive for what you get. 21/08/2017

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Patrick E. Confirmed

  • Electric hardstanding pitch

  • Liked:

Safe for the Grandchildren, pitches kept trimmed and tidy.

    Disliked:

Pitches too close together - no privacy at all, no hedges or screens. Totally inadequate amount of showers, only 4 male and 4 female for the whole site - in one block, and that not central... the showers were only cleaned once a day in the afternoon - always dirty when we used them, which had to be early morning, or you had to queue!

No drain down facility (Service Point ) for Motorhomes, no hoses on taps to fill clean water with. Fishing in the ponds with the grandchildren worked out to be very expensive, and speaking to several people fishing there, not very productive. Advertised as "Free Wi-Fi", well yes, but only if you are in the shop or leaning against the window - no Wi-Fi on pitches. Shop doesn't stock much in the way of bait (not as advertised), also shop only open a couple of hours a day, morning and afternoon - and that at high season!

Space between the pitches is good so neighbours are not too close.
Different pitch areas gives a lovely garden feel to the campsite.
Beautiful fishing lakes area is great for an evening nature walk with children.
10p.m quiet is well observed by everyone.
Showers and toilets are always clean and a hot showers were great. Useful to have washing machines, tumble driers and ironing facilities - packed less clothes and did a wash.
A lovely campsite for everyone. Friendly, safe and fun.

    Disliked:

    Lovely site with good amenities.

    Disliked:

Not campsite fault but it did rain a lot during our stay and ground didn't drain the water away very well hence left for a muddy and soggy pitch area for the ten days. Showers whilst clean had no option to control temperature of the water - some days only cold water and some days mixture of between warm and cold. Think I only had one shower that the temperature remained warm the whole time

Wonderfully peaceful site and roomy, perfectly even pitches. Paths to access pitches were excellent and puddle free so their drainage was great. A little coffee/pastry van comes round too every couple of days. Yay!

    Disliked:

Toilets and shower were peŕfectly clean though only one weak hand dryer and new shower heads are a couple of minor things that could be improved.

The main thing you want while camping is clean facilities, shower, toilet, washing etc. We got that. Was pleasantly surprised with how new the ablutions were and how clean they were kept.

Wash sinks are spread around the park. There's plenty of room on all the pitches.

There's a decently stocked shop on site with all the essentials.

    Disliked:

I'm really nitpicking. But simply to state a dislike it was phone signal, and I know that isn't down to the park owners. I'm just saying. It's an area with really bad signal.

Excellent site, very clean shower block, green and spacious pitches. 12/08/2017

The whole site is immaculately kept, the grounds are tended daily to keep on top of muddy pitches, the grass is also mowed to an adequate length to keep from becoming muddy. The shower block was kept scrupulously clean with plenty of showers for the volume of guests. I will most definitely visit again if travelling to Cornwall.

    Disliked:

Some shower heads needed de-scaling or replacing, one shower I used had two strong jets and the remaining holes created a mist which meant I had to spend nearly my entire shower with spray in my face. The men's shower suffered a similar issue.
There was no cardboard recycling on site.
The shop did seem more geared towards anglers than campers and did not stock basic foods (eggs, bread, beans), camping staples!

Travelling westwards through Cornwall, bypass the village of Indian Queens, remaining on the A30. Continue straight over the roundabout by the wind farm, signposted Redruth A30 and Perranporth B3285. After 1.5 miles turn right at the Boxheater junction, onto the B3285 signed Perranporth and Goonhavern. Continue along the B3285 for 1.5 miles, following the brown tourism signs marked Perran Springs. The park entrance will then be clearly seen on the right-hand side.

Local attractions

Perran Springs Holiday Park is just inland from Cornwall’s north coast and a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it drive to Perranporth and lifeguarded Perran Beach, edged by the range of dunes at Penhale Sands.

Perran Beach is popular with surfers and kitesurfers, as are many beaches along the north coast including surf capital Newquay and family-friendly Portreath; surf schools and surf hire shops are of course all around for those who like to skate the waves. On land, Perranporth Golf Club is just north of the town and the long-distance South West Coast Path covers a 12-mile hike from Perranporth to Newquay via Fistral Beach.

Within five miles of Perran Springs, whether you stick to the coast or go inland, there’s enough to keep all ages out of mischief. Littlies will like Newquay Zoo and the Blue Reef Aquarium, while grownups of a green-fingered tint have the gardens of Elizabethan manor Trerice to tempt them. Further inland, green spaces such as The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project are within 30 minutes’ drive.

Nearby Newquay isn’t just about the surf and its zoo: have a go at its golf club with views over the Atlantic or take a puff on the Lappa Valley Steam Railway on the town outskirts; horse-riding, boat trips and deep sea fishing can all be arranged from here too. For a rainy day, award-winning DairyLand Farmworld should be a hit with the kids.

Around towns, hike up the hills and poke around the antiques and curio shops of Truro and Falmouth, or coasthop around other villages and towns on the north and south coast such as arty St Ives and the Tate St Ives gallery and Tintagel of King Arthur legend; around most, you should find a sandy beach and a hidden cove or two as well.

Or stay very close to home: Perran Springs has private access to a footpath going through the Carn Moor Nature Reserve and Conservation Area which is next to the park.
