General

  • Dog-friendly site, 25 minutes’ walk to dog-friendly Perranporth beach
  • 10-minute drive to Healey's cider farm: tastings, tractors and animals
  • Dog-walking and play areas on site; barbecues and campfires permitted

Not one for an excessive number of amenities? Anchor down at the family-friendly Anchor Barrow Campsite for back to basics camping, a 20-minute walk (or a couple of minutes’ drive) from the seaside town of Perranporth.

The family that runs this place includes a couple of dogs, so they’re more than happy to accommodate your four-legged friends, too. And hounds are in for an active time – they’ll get the run of the large dog-walking area on site, as well as a chance to roam the dog-friendly Perranporth beach; the three-mile stretch of sand is a 25-minute coastal stroll from base.

Canine pal by your side or not, the beach is a fab spot for sandy strolls and salty splashes… and it’s a fine choice for surfing, as well (if your skills aren’t up to much, you could always enrol in surf school to perfect your hang ten).

Back at base, there’s a big green space where the kids can play, and barbecues and campfires are permitted for relaxed evenings in. The amenities may be simple, but the essentials are covered – there are shower and toilet blocks, as well as a washing-up area.

We loved the open fields and space. Very chilled atmosphere. Loved the van which provided the best Granola and yogurt breakfast ever!
The new toilet block was lovely and definitely need the additional one planned for next year.

    Disliked:

Not so much a dislike but the noise from the main road was annoying after a while.

Amazing facilities, waterfall showers, hairdryers provided, no charges for extras like awnings etc., and the food truck serving breakfasts were the tastiest toasted sandwiches we’ve ever had! Also loved just texting to say we’ve arrived rather than having to officially check in. We’ve stayed in many campsites and this was definitely the best and at such good value too!! Will definitely be back.

    Disliked:

Totally out of anyone’s control but there were a group of young lads beside us up chatting all night until about 3am (luckily they left for our second night)

The campsite was very good and the facilities were very well kept and cleaned regularly.

The breakfast van was really nice and done a good selection of toasties, cakes, granola and coffees. Was able to enjoy the view as well

    Disliked:

The walking routes to and from perranporth I found were very hazardous. The one along the main road was quite dangerous with how fast the cars go

The other route was tricky with the uphill and along another road

Not sure if this could be changed? Like maybe a shuttle bus or create a path by the hotel nearby so it is safer

Also due to the location on a hill it gets very windy and cold

But this can be reticfied by bringing warmer clothes

Local attractions

Once you’ve got to grips with the waves at Perranporth beach, make your way to Newquay (20 minutes’ drive) for some of Cornwall’s most famed surfing spots, including Fistral beach. While in town, you could also visit Newquay Zoo and the Blue Reef Aquarium for some animal encounters, or hurtle down some waterslides at Waterworld Leisure Centre.

If you’ve had your fill of ocean air, you can swap beach ambles for woodland wanders with a stroll around the 250-acre Tehidy Woods country park (20 minutes). Dogs are welcome here and, with more than nine miles of path to plod, there’s plenty of peaceful woodland and pretty lakes to explore. Dogs can also accompany you to Trelissick Garden (25 minutes) – while they’re not allowed inside the house or gardens, they can tag along on roams of the surrounding parkland, including the three-mile Woodland Walk circuit.

Speaking of gardens, a visit to the Eden Project (40 minutes) is a must while in Cornwall – the huge indoor rainforest has all sorts of spectacular greenery and plants to see, as well as exhibitions and events for the whole gang.

For more family days out, there’s Lappa Valley Steam Railway (20 minutes), Paradise Park and JungleBarn wildlife sanctuary (half an hour) and Flambards theme park (40 minutes). Closer to base, a trip to Healey's Cornish Cyder Farm (10 minutes) comes with tours, tractor rides, farm animals and, of course, tastings – there are fruit juices for the kids to try, while grown-ups can sample ciders and wines.

Must see
