General

  • Dog-friendly site, 25 minutes’ walk to dog-friendly Perranporth beach
  • A 20-minute drive to Newquay; 40 minutes to Eden Project and Flambards
  • On-site bar and kitchen, plus acres of space for games

Keen to explore the north Cornwall coast? Anchor down at the family-friendly Anchor Barrow Campsite, with lovely views over the Cornish countryside and the coast a short stroll away.

This location is an excellent one for seaside stays – the three-mile beach at Perranporth is about five minutes’ drive away, or you can access the sands and the town’s amenities via three footpaths that run from the site (or from the bus stop just outside the site). Other Cornish hotspots like Newquay, Gwithian and St Ives are within easy reach too, should you fancy venturing further afield.

Back at base, there’s a fine collection of facilities to make life easy and comfortable. All the basics are covered here: the bathrooms are modern and immaculately kept, and guests also have access to a launderette, a washing-up area and a kitchen corner with communal fridges/freezers and a microwave. On top of that, there are secure device charging lockers, a car charging port (extra charge) and a large secure paddock where dogs can have a run around.

If it’s the kids that need a run around, that’s no issue – this site has acres of green space for playing, along with a full-size football pitch for more organised games.

Meanwhile, if it’s relaxation time that you’re after, that’s easily sorted too. Anchor Barrow has an on-site bar selling a range of Cornish ales, ciders and spirits, and a kitchen that serves up breakfasts and coffees and hosts fabulous feast nights several times a week. Local musicians perform on site from time to time as well, for a bit of entertainment while you sip your drinks.

If you’d rather go down the self-catering route you can bring or hire firepits, with wood available from the site shop (which also sells various essentials and Cornish goodies). A large indoor barn space has seating if it’s not outdoor dining weather.

Nice modern facility, food and drinks sold there were amazing, showers were great and had a proper hairdryer too which was a nice touch. They had a barn with tables, ping pong tables, and a selection of games which was great fun. Convenient shop on site too.

    Disliked:

Only thing would be that the field is very exposed on the hill so if it’s windy you really feel it!

    Disliked:

I guess, maybe limited activities for the children, there is a huge room with two table tennis tables, perhaps this could be better utilised. But I’m being constructive here and would not downgrade a rating for this. The site is superb overall.

    - Park is lovely!
    - Staff are friendly and welcoming
    - Food they serve is amazing and using local produce. We tried the hog roast one night was delicous!
    - Choose where you want to pitch up rather than being forced into a space
    - The vibe around everyone at the park is friendly and family orientated
    - The toilets and showers are nice and clean (showers are lovely!!)
    - Use of small fridges, freezer (for freezer blocks) and electrical plugs to charge your devices
    - They have a inside part which has jenga, ping pong and some colouring books for people to play with
    - The shop is small but has lots of essentials and at good prices too! It also sells butcher packs and local meats
    - hire fire pits
    - football pitch with goals for the kids (and adult kids) plus football tennis table
    - not much lighting which means you get to see beautiful skys at dusk and night time
    - live acoustic music most nights
    - Music cut off at 10pm which is fair enough

Would love to come back again for sure. Probably our best camping site to be honest.

    Disliked:

Not really the parks fault but unfortunately for 2 nights we had the most noisiest loved up drunk couple next to our tent. My wife and 3 kids heard every conversation, breath and movement they made as well as the first night loud music past 10pm! Luckily the staff reminded them as they obviously didnt see the signs about the music and they turned it down although used their phone to still play music. Also the stench of that a**hole urinating near our tent at night. Was going to talk to them the next day but they were out all day then luckily left!
As I said not the parks fault on this one just hope the park can make it clear to people when they come to respect others and turn off music by 10pm.

Local attractions

Once you’ve got to grips with the waves at Perranporth beach, make your way to Newquay (20 minutes’ drive) for some of Cornwall’s most famed surfing spots, including Fistral beach. While in town, you could also visit Newquay Zoo and the Blue Reef Aquarium for some animal encounters, or hurtle down some waterslides at Waterworld Leisure Centre.

If you’ve had your fill of ocean air, you can swap beach ambles for woodland wanders with a stroll around the 250-acre Tehidy Woods country park (20 minutes). Dogs are welcome here and, with more than nine miles of path to plod, there’s plenty of peaceful woodland and pretty lakes to explore. Dogs can also accompany you to Trelissick Garden (25 minutes) – while they’re not allowed inside the house or gardens, they can tag along on roams of the surrounding parkland, including the three-mile Woodland Walk circuit.

Speaking of gardens, a visit to the Eden Project (40 minutes) is a must while in Cornwall – the huge indoor rainforest has all sorts of spectacular greenery and plants to see, as well as exhibitions and events for the whole gang.

For more family days out, there’s Lappa Valley Steam Railway (20 minutes), Paradise Park and JungleBarn wildlife sanctuary (half an hour) and Flambards theme park (40 minutes). Closer to base, a trip to Healey's Cornish Cyder Farm (10 minutes) comes with tours, tractor rides, farm animals and, of course, tastings – there are fruit juices for the kids to try, while grown-ups can sample ciders and wines.
