  • Trewidden Garden 15 minutes’ drive; Minack Theatre 20 minutes
  • Private outdoor space with firepit, fairy lights and compost toilet
You really will be heading into the woods at Into The Woods – getting to the bell tents at this rural Cornwall site involves following a path through the trees and over a river to a private space in a peaceful valley. This is a place that feels very far removed from the trappings of modern life: it’s an off-grid site where the owners encourage guests to join them in a greener approach to life. The toiletries provided are eco-friendly; the water for washing dishes, clothes and people comes from the river; and all waste is composted. You’ll be staying in comfy bell tents kitted out with comfy feather beds and a kitchen area, along with a firepit and fairy lights for atmospheric alfresco evenings. The space around the tent is all yours, although you may have to share with the odd deer, badger or woodpecker… ‘The most useful app on your phone here is the torch’ say the owners, alluding to the fact that there’s only very limited phone signal in the valley – something that many guests appreciate as it gives them a real chance to switch off. Unsurprisingly, the area attracts many artists and eccentrics, some of whom you may meet if you stop off in the local pub en route from Lamorna Cove (a 15-minute walk away). There’s plenty of scope for a longer walk too, as the site is on the South West Coast Path and therefore in a great position for hikes to the likes of Carn Barges, Tater Du or the village of Mousehole. Inland, it’s a 15-minute stroll to The Merry Maidens, a Neolithic stone circle.

Brogh bell tent

Liked: Daisy & Fran have created a truly lovely, back to nature, glamping experience. The woods themselves are beautiful, with a magical babbling stream running through it and they have managed to position the two bell tents so that they are both really private and with minimal impact on the natural woodland. Our tent was warm and cosy, with a really comfy bed and lovely furniture. (all made by Fran) I enjoyed washing in the stream (very refreshing) but my wife, not so much but it was easy to warm water on the gas hob and wash in the camp. The kitchen trunk is full of everything we needed (including lovely olive oil!) so you really only need to turn up with clothes. It’s in an excellent location for access to stunning beaches and coves and we had a brilliant evening watching a show at the Minnack theatre which is a must visit if you’re in the area.

Brogh bell tent

Liked: Amazing set up to get you back to nature! Loved walking over the bridge to get to camp, collecting water from the river, lighting campfires, and even the eco toilet with a view of the woods! Everything has been created with such care and a few luxuries thrown in (super comfy bed) to make it feel like a treat despite being off grid. Daisy is a fabulous host, checking in and even delivering fresh fruit & veg during the week! It’s a great location near to the village pub, cafe, bus stop and the beach - but away from the crowds of other places along the coast.

Local attractions

The famed Cornish microclimate might be the reason behind the lush vegetation at Trewidden Garden (15 minutes’ drive). You can stroll among colourful collections of blossoming camellias and magnolias, then marvel at the vast stand of Australian tree ferns, first planted at the start of the 20th century in an ancient tin mine. The sea is the splendid backdrop for performances at the outdoor Minack Theatre (20 minutes), which has been built right into the cliffs. And the spectacle of nature doesn’t stop there, with large areas of the amphitheatre planted with succulent plants and vibrant flowers. Land’s End (20 minutes) is mainland England’s westernmost spot, and you can take a picture with an iconic sign that announces the distance to cities across the ocean or the country. You can also arrange for your own town to be added to the sign. After that, join the South West Coast Path and stroll along the cliffs, taking in the dramatic landscape and birdlife, from gannets to kittiwakes.
