  • Award-winning family-run park halfway between Padstow and Newquay
  • Half a mile from the South West Coast Path and Porthcothan Bay beach
  • Animals, pony rides, playground, bar and pop-up food nights on site
Macdonald's Farm Touring and Camping is a small family-run park among Cornish countryside and hills, well placed for exploring this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty: it’s set back from the county's rugged coastline, half a mile from spectacular Porthcothan Bay on the north Cornish coast between Padstow and Newquay, and is award-winning too. This is the place for you if you fancy sleeping under the Cornish stars, eating top-notch local food in the farm garden (open at specific times for breakfast, lunch and dinner during high season, but closed on Mondays), riding ponies and meeting friendly animals (alpacas and rabbits live on site) – perhaps followed by a drink or two from the site's Sundowner Bar (also shut on Mondays). Your booking entitles you to exclusive access to the garden, animals, playground and activities, plus the bar and pop-up food nights. Spacious pitches are set among four small bays on grass at the top of a valley, on a gentle slope, and have excellent far-reaching views. Site amenities include free showers and toilets, disabled facilities, washing-up facilities, a laundry room and baby changing.

Non-electric grass pitch (large)

Liked: A very well kept site with 5* facilities. It has a brilliant cafe and bar with a small shop too. Only a short walk to local each too. Staff were all friendly. Reasonably priced. We didn’t visit the farm but it looked popular with the children. People camping were respectful of the curfew time to be quiet. Was a little concerned that this site would be a little commercial but still had the down to earth feel of a basic site but just plush facilities and lovely staff. Highly recommend this site … thank you.

Liked: Great amenities and atmosphere, friendly staff, good nightly rate, great restaraunt/bar.

Disliked: 2 hours of free WiFi in bar area... Unlimited WiFi business accounts are readily available and people are spending enough on pitches and food etc already - to have to pay for WiFi in 2024 seems unnecessary and a bit of a cash grab. Would have been 5 stars if this was included.

Non-electric grass pitch (large)

Liked: What a gem! This is a beautifully kept and run site. Even though we were two women in our late twenties, we loved seeing the animals, definitely not just for children! Toilet and shower facilities were modern and very clean. Staff were extremely friendly and laid back. We made use of the bar, watched some live music and loved the outdoor cafe/restaurant area, food was delicious and reasonably priced. The location couldn’t have been better, a short drive to padstow and Newquay but close to lots of beautiful bays, including one a 10 minute walk away. A lot of thought has gone into this site. Will be visiting again.

Disliked: Phone signal was patchy, WiFi was available in some areas. Didn’t bother us but something to be aware of in case you need to be contactable.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Loads to do for the kids, animals on site and a great play area which they loved. The bar was great for getting a drink and chatting to fellow campers in the evening and the quality of the live music on the Wednesday evening was excellent. The facilities are clean and the family rooms make things easier for sorting the kids out with showers etc. Bus service stops right outside the site to take you to Padstow or further afield if you wish which is great.

Disliked: We had booked a non electric grass pitch as we don’t require a hook up and we are not usually bothered about a hard standing. There had been a lot of rain and the attitude from the receptionist seemed to be that we should’ve had the foresight to know the weather conditions a month in advance, understand their ground conditions and therefore booked a hard standing pitch to avoid getting stuck. We were put on a pitch at the bottom of a hill, despite there being other more suitable pitches for a heavy camper, and inevitably we got stuck. This wasn’t a problem for us as we didn’t plan to move the van again until we were going to leave, but for some who plan to use their van during the day, this would be a bit of a problem. We were towed out by the tractor and a very friendly staff member at the end of our stay. The laundry is very expensive. £2 for 15 minutes in the dryer so save your laundry and do it elsewhere!

Local attractions

The nearest beach, Porthcothan, is a small bay popular with families and an excellent spot for bathing and surfing. It’s made up of a narrow inlet with cliffs, sand dunes, rockpools and a little stream running down to the sea all combine to make it an idyllic place for children. The South West Coast Path is easily accessed from here too, for hikes to Newquay eight and a half miles to the south. By road, it’s five and a half miles from the farm to Padstow; a bus running from Padstow to Newquay stops outside the site if you’d rather leave the car behind. Other outdoor activities close by include surfing at Watergate Bay within 15 minutes’ drive or zipping around St Eval Kart Circuit within five minutes’ drive. For food, try the local pub with its spectacular views over Porthcothan Bay, or the Rick Stein seafood restaurant at Padstow. Heading towards the south coast, the Eden Project is 35 minutes’ drive away.
