Gwinear Camping and Fishing: View of the campsite overlooking specimen lake

General

  • Spacious and quiet site in Cornwall with two fishing lakes
  • A 10-minute drive from Newquay and three National Trust surf beaches
  • Tackle shop on site; five minutes' drive from pubs and shops

Fisherfolk, form a queue: this fab site on Cornwall's north coast has a pair of fishing lakes as well as sea fishing trips nearby.

Gwinear Camping and Fishing is a spacious site about five minutes' drive from the villages of Cubert and Crantock. It's accessed by a track road a short drive from the A3075 connecting visitors to Newquay and top attractions all across Cornwall.

The grassy field is spacious and level, and visitors heap praise on the spotless modern washrooms with roomy and hot showers. If you're into the joys of fishing, you'll be overjoyed over here: Gwinear has a pair of well-stocked fishing lakes open all year. New large pegs and paths all the way around make the lakes great for easy access and long days, and a tackle shop is on site if you've forgotten to bring a vital bit of kit. (There's a pleasure lake and specimen lake on site and both lakes have different rules regarding equipment: please ask for details of these on arrival.)

Cubert and Crantock are handily close with pubs and shops, and supermarkets for more extensive supplies and sustenance are in Newquay.

We arrived on site an hour earlier then the check in time and we were allowed straight on site. Our pitch was massive and nice and flat, the grass wasn’t muddy so you can see it’s been looked after. The campsite is nice and quiet and we couldn’t fault the shower and toilet facilities they were spotless.

What a wonderfully quiet, well appointed and impeccably maintained site. It's rare to find all of that in one place these days. The owners are lovely, incredibly helpful and value customers' input, plus they couldn't do enough for us.

Everything works brilliantly, including Wifi (something which isn't the case for many bigger sites!). I cannot leave a review without mentioning the standard of the toilet blocks, just superb!

    We will be back!

Lovely Clean Site - Older campers / Single couples Site.06/06/2022

Wonderfully clean site, especially liked that the water source was attached to our electric point that was very conveniently located.
Showers and toilets immaculate and lovely and warm, pitches are level and well spaced.
Met at reception on arrival promptly with friendly staff. A lovely site.
Immaculately clean and extremely quiet. If your looking for peace and quiet with minimal children its a wonderful site. WIFI is excellent and managed to watch a film without any buffering at all most definitely makes a difference.
You can see the pride put into the site by the owners.

    Disliked:

Only very small points to consider -
No electrical points in the shower room to use a hairdryer for the ladies in tents.
Could massively benefit from some small grocery supplies as the nearest shop is a couple of miles away. Although if we had been better prepared this wouldn't have been a problem.
The site is most definitely aimed at the older campers / caravan users so if you have young children they will most definitely need to take something to entertain themselves with as there are no climbing / children facilities and most definitely avoid scooters / bikes as the paths around the site are gravel so may struggle with a pushchair too. Although this is not the aim to attract families this is a fishing site.
We were charged for fishing although the fish were spawning slightly disappointed that we were charged full price for that reason. But I also guess that was my fault as I paid and not my partner.
These are very minor points and should no way take away the hard work and dedication to this site by its owners.

Local attractions

You can reach a trio of blooming fine beaches within a 10-minute drive from your base at Gwinear Camping and Fishing: Holywell Bay, Crantock and Poly Joke are National Trust-maintained beaches with a mix of soft sands, dunes, rockpools and top surf, with far fewer crowds than nearby hotspots like Fistral.

For walks both lapped by the waves and high on the cliffs, it's 10 minutes' drive to link up with the mighty 630-mile South West Coast Path. A good half-day section from Newquay takes you to Bedruthan Steps (half an hour by car) for clifftop vistas, steep steps down to a secluded beach (check tide times), rock climbing and a welcome café.

Inland, the smart fishing town of Padstow (40 minutes) marks the start of the Camel Trail, a 17-mile track taking walkers, cyclists and horse riders through some of Cornwall's finest countryside. Padstow's a popular stop for fish too, eaten battered on the beach, served up smart in restaurants or bought to grill up back at the base. If you want to land your own, there are various sea fishing options on offer in Newquay; if you prefer your fish in a tank, the Blue Reef Aquarium is a real gem.

For family days out, it's half an hour to Camel Creek Adventure Park, a heady mix of crocodiles, meerkats, rides, activities and a 5D cinema. The big-name rainforest biospheres of The Eden Project and the elegant Lost Gardens of Heligan are 40 minutes away.
