Looking for a Cornwall break for two? You won’t get much more romantic than a stay in Rambling Rose Gypsy Caravan Holidays, a traditional bow-top gypsy caravan within the grounds of Delancey House in Lostwithiel. It’s been restored to its present gorgeousness by a talented Cornish craftsman using traditional methods passed down through generations. Dating from the 1930s, the Romany caravan still has some of its original paintwork and is decorated using ages-old art techniques to show scroll work and rambling roses. With retro styling and decorative woodwork, the pretty interior has a woodburning stove, pull-out double bed, cooking hob and cosy soft furnishings. Outside is its own private cottage garden with views to the River Fowey valley, where all cooking utensils are provided for the outdoor campfire, including a cooking tripod. Towels are included for your use in the shower room, a short walk away in a private courtyard behind the main house. With good road links, you are in pole position to explore Cornwall – but you may simply not want to leave Rambling Rose behind for too long. And that’s especially true after sunset on clear nights, when you can snuggle up with drinks by the campfire and see celestial displays twinkling far above.

Local attractions

If you can bear to be parted from Rambling Rose, start your explorations in Lostwithiel (20 minutes’ walk), which has a deli, pubs and restaurants. Browse the antique shops, stroll alongside the River Fowey or explore the ruins of circular Restormel Castle (40 minutes), one of several Norman castles built in Cornwall. You can watch outdoor concerts there during summer months too. A bit further afield, there are also evening concerts and events at the Eden Project (15 minutes’ drive), where you can explore biomes full of rare tropical and temperate plants and trees during the day. Another popular Cornish day out is at the Lost Gardens of Heligan (half an hour), with lush plantings and sculpture trails through the trees. Closer to home, there are hillside flower gardens and woodland strolls at Hidden Valley Gardens (10 minutes). Want to do something a bit different? Get up close to zebras and meerkats at Porfell Wildlife Park and Sanctuary (15 minutes), also home of a reconstructed Maasai village, sign yourself up for a bat-patrol evening at National Trust-owned Lanhydrock (five minutes), or go foraging for wild food from the Wild Food School (five minutes).
