  • Hammock, picnic bench, outdoor seating and firepit on each unit
  • Eco-friendly with solar power, natural spring and wildlife pond
What a smashing little site is West Kellow Yurts in Cornwall, 10 minutes' drive from Looe and set on a hillside between Polperro and Lansallos. (Before you read any further, so look at the site pics…) You might dither over deciding your fave feature of this scenic setting: the splendid countryside and sea views (really, look at the site pics), or the thoughtful touches put into the glamping accommodation placed on a nine-acre field of an organic farm. Want your own hammock to sway gently in the Cornish breeze by day or look at the stars by night? A campfire tripod, Dutch oven, barbecue and kebab stewers on each pitch? Own personal picnic bench and outdoor seating area for communal banquets? Done, done and done. Matt and team have set everything up here so guests can start seriously relaxing the minute they arrive: a welcome pack will await and all accommodation has kitchen areas and an outdoor firepit. There's also a well-equipped communal kitchen on site with gas hobs, fridge freezer, microwave and coffee room, in the amenities block which comes with a luxury and modern wetroom with toilets and hot showers. Also on site, wanderers will find a most pretty wildlife pond – again, have a look at the site pics…

Stargazer shepherd's hut (four person)

Liked: We only stayed one night, arrived about 5.30 pm and left before 9 am. We appreciated the logs for the fire pit, the power pack, the starry skies, sea view, comfortable bed, wash basin and gas rings. The communal kitchen would be great for a bunch of friends we thought and the showers/toilets were clean and good standard. Great that the site is off grid. Off season so apart from one guy (who kept driving about) we didn't see anyone. We are relatively local so the wow factor was a bit lacking. Polperro was great before the coaches hit.

Disliked: Some accommodation looked a bit 'tired'. Sure the salt winds beat the he** out of the paintwork. Having the loos in with the showers may not be such a brilliant idea when the site is busy?

Barn Owl yurt (four person)

Liked: Fantastic stay in Barn Owl Yurt, very spacious and comfortable with fabulous outdoor space - loved the big picnic table, fire pit and hammock. Accommodation on the site is all well spaced out so felt very private. Excellent communal facilities (including organic veg for sale) and some very thoughtful touches - free fresh eggs & a power bank. Can't recommend West Kellow Hurts highly enough!

Barn Owl yurt (four person)

Liked: Great campsite our pitch was very private with lots of space and distance from the pitch next to us. The location was good a nice walk down into Polperro however the walk back up the hill was a challenge! Our yurt was very comfortable and the kitchen facilities were excellent as was the shower rooms. The staff on site were very friendly and helpful.

Disliked: The only real think we disliked was the lack of lighting in the yurt, we had a string of fairy lights and 2 tea lights which made being in the tent after 8.30pm a little tricky and we had to resort to using our phone torches. Had we known this beforehand we would have taken our own source of lighting . The solar light on the yurt door was broken. The sheets on the bed had a few stains on them and we had make up the spare bed ourselves after collecting the sheets from the shed.

Buzzard yurt (five person)

Liked: The Yurt was fantastic. Everything was clean. The kitchen and facilities were simple but adequate. They had a bbq for guests to use. The hot water for in shower and kitchen was hot and not like warm. Absolutely spacious and you can hear the nature. Beautiful surroundings and very accessible. I will definitely be going back again.

Disliked: Everything was great 👍

Liked: Everything was as described. The emailed instructions were fantastic along with all the local information. The wagon was fun. The showers, toilets and kitchens were functional. Nice touch were tea and coffee. Phone charger packs and fresh eggs.

Disliked: Can't blame them for the weather. What a washout

Buzzard yurt (five person)

Liked: Everything it was a great stay the showers were lovely and hot and the kitchens are a great idea. We had free fresh eggs every morning and even fed the chickens with our scraps. Lovely views over the bay. Will defo come back

Disliked: The walk to Polperro very narrow roads and very steep!! We did it once

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks Dawn for the lovely review (and feeding the chickens your scraps! They love different food😊). Kitchens are fully equipped so it saves guests packing plates, mugs etc. Yes, it's a lovely 15 mins walk down into Polperro. I usually walk back up after a refreshing cider in the village, but if it's been a long day, a taxi or all day parking are each only about 10 quid I guess as a one off treat. I try to be good and just walk it 😊 😇. Welcome back anytime.

Enjoyed our stay, especially fresh eggs off site.

Wood cabin

Liked: Quiet, spacious which is perfect for us and our dog . As normal campsites people everywhere and dog doesn't settle as easy.

Disliked: Our cabin door did leak with some fierce wind and rain , si we just moved our things off the door hooks once we knew that.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the kind comments. I think the spacious setting is popular for guests who like their own space to relax. I will take a look at the door and probably put some beading around the edge in case we get another ferocious summer storm. Luckily these are rare as they have to come from a certain direction. The free range eggs for breakfast have proved popular as well, glad you enjoyed those.

Local attractions

The narrow winding streets of the village of Polperro, a half-mile walk across the field and down a lane from West Kellow Yurts include several pubs (four with beer gardens) which often have live music and performances in the summer months. If you're in Polperro in June, potter along to the Polperro Festival; if you're in village any other time of year, potter along to the Polperro Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing (aarrr): you may already know that both snuggling and fishing have their place in Cornish history… There's loads more to see within easy driving distance from your hammock whether you want a secluded cove, popular surfing spot, the walks of the South West Coast Path or well-known Cornish attractions like the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, both nearby. Looe and Fowey, both harbour towns, are 10 and 20 minutes away respectively; Fowey via the passenger ferry from Mevagissey. At Looe, look for the trawlers on the quay (pic alert) and take a boat trip out from the beach to spy the sharks – you can hike the 12 miles of the South West Coast Path from here to Fowey if you fancy it… Or get riled up at Adrenalin Quarry at Menheniot, 'throwing people off cliffs since 2009', where you can also zoom over the lake in a zipwire and take the Giant Swing ride – extra stomach possibly required.
