General

  • Cornish yurts, bell tents with first-class views all set separately
  • Half a mile's walk from Polperro village with restaurants, cafés, pubs
  • Eco-friendly with solar power and natural spring

What a smashing little site is West Kellow Yurts in Cornwall, ten minutes' drive from the lovely town of Looe and set on a hillside between Polperro and Lansallos. (Before you read any further, we suggest you look at the site pics.)

We're not sure which we're more in envious love of here: the splendid countryside and sea views (really, look at the site pics), or the thoughtful touches put into the yurts and bell tents placed on a nine-acre field of an organic farm.

Want your own hammock to sway gently in the Cornish breeze or look at the stars? Campfire tripod, Dutch oven, barbecue and kebab stewers on each pitch? Own personal picnic bench and outdoor seating area for communal banquets? Done, done and done.

Matt and team have set everything up here so guests can start seriously relaxing the minute they arrive: a welcome pack will await and the yurts have a mini kitchen equipped with gas burner and kettle for the first cuppa (the bell tent has a gas burner and there's also a well-equipped communal kitchen on site with gas hobs, fridge freezer, microwave, coffee room).

The communal kitchen is in the amenities block, which also has a luxury and modern wetroom with loos and hot showers.

Also on site, wanderers will find a most pretty wildlife pond – again, have a look at the site pics…

Please note

We don’t have a staffed reception area and may not always be on site, so please contact us when you are on your way with your estimated time of arrival and we will be there to welcome you. You must provide your booking ID.

We were looking for a large private space that was peaceful, with good views, and a location close to the sea, along with space for our 2 dogs to roam around. Luckily we found all of that here so certainly ticked all our boxes.
The wild life pond is also worth a bit time spent down there, as it is a lovely peaceful spot to relax.
The Yurts are a good size as is the outside space.

Scenic location, very relaxing and 'back to nature', private space ... 22/04/2017

Scenic location, very relaxing and 'back to nature', private space around yurts including bamboo fence around, private hammock and chair, private fire pit for cooking. Lovely location, loads around to do if you want to, or just relax and soak up nature. Near to pretty local harbour village (Polperro) well-blessed with 5+ pubs. The owner provided great information in advance. Kestrel Yurt was very nice inside - bit dark but good with tealights on (provided) and the 3 main yurts all have log burners for warmth, with basket of wood provided. Great challenging walks locally including 2-3 hours along the coast to Looe - footpath all the way and incredibly scenic.

    Disliked:

Nothing in particular. A private toilet for each yurt would be good, but we knew in advance that there were two communal loo/shower rooms between the three yurts and these were clean and well maintained. The walk uphill from town is a slog but OK if you're fit and prepared to take your time - otherwise the taxis are abundant and only cost £6 or so.

From the manager...

Thanks Ian. A nice accurate view of the campsite. Hope to see you return one day.

Stayed at west Kellow yurts over the Easter bank holiday
The yurt was lovely with the log burner in and everything was laid out perfectly
The campfire was well used too
The site was beautiful with just the right amount of back to basics
The showers/toilets and kitchen all very clean
Site very peaceful and made the weekend very relaxing but still close enough to get to beaches and get to shops nearby

Also a perfect site for dogs
My springer spaniel loved bouncing through the long grass on site

    Disliked:

    no real dislikes to add

Could of done with a slightly thicker duvet but that's just nit picking

From the manager...

Thanks for the great comments above! Makes the job much easier to hear people are having a nice time. I accidentally put the summer duvet in that yurt, but it has the correct thicker one now, along with the usual thick throws. Camp fires and BBQ's make a summers evening don't they. I'm glad i gave each yurt their own camp fire area next to their yurt.

Remoteness, space for each yurt, wood burner inside, fire ares outside. Bamboo fencing all around. Good communal kitchen area

    Disliked:

The flue for the burner leaked in the extreme rain we had meaning we couldn't use it. Spoke to owner who will rectify. Didn't happen in one of the other Yurts though.

From the manager...

Thanks, people seem to like the fact the yurts are all 50 meters apart and bamboo screened for added privacy. Also that it's quiet/remote, but within walking distance to the shops/pubs/restaurants! Anyway, I have ordered a new cowl (this is the name given for the hat thing that goes on top of a chimney/flue) which will stop any sideways rain coming in, as well as the usual downwards stuff! The other 2 yurts haven't had this problem yet, but i may upgrade their cowls before it does happen. I can only be grateful it took until September to experience such a problem i suppose.

Wouldn't stay here again our yurt leaked & the owner didn't reply back to our calls.

    Disliked:

From the manager...

I would generally give people an hour or so to return a phone call as they may be driving etc. Such a shame you upped and left so quickly. I could have replaced the wet door mat that afternoon, but i appreciate the door on that yurt can easily be left open by mistake. It does make a clicking sound when it closes properly, but there is a bolt on it now to make double sure the door shuts and the rain doesn't get in.

dog friendly, plenty of space away from other visitors so it didnt feel like we were on top of each other but also good communal spaces if interaction is desired. clean facilities. good communication prior to visit from site owner discribing what to do when we arrived and recommendations of places to visit. the children loved the hammock and the large field in which to run around and play with the equipment provided. plenty of cooking equipment provided for campers to use and it was lovely to have our own area to create a fire pit to roast marshmallows.

    Disliked:

the only negative comment is that the yurt, although clean warm and tidy did smell slightly of damp. this may be inevitalbe with this type of accomadation and nice smelly candles were provided which one lit took away the smell.

From the manager...

Thanks. People have enjoyed the hammocks, private camp fire area's and extra space in general. It was particularly wet and very warm that week, meaning the log burner wasn't lit and thus making the canvas smell damp. All rectified now with a nice warm log fire to dry the canvas out. This hasn't happened before, as it's rare, so quite a new problem. I think if this happens again (hot and wet for 3 or 4 days in a row), guests could get the log burner going well when they go out for the day. That way they don't overheat whilst inside the yurt. The other two yurts are newer and seem to repel the water better, so just for this yurt i think.

Thank you so much for the lovely comments. We no longer have the Skylark safari tent, but the 3 yurts are still available for guests to hire. Each with a hammock, sun lounger, log burner, fire pit, BBQ and a sea view! All within walking distance to the shops/pubs/restaurants as well.

Clean and spacious yurt, space to run and play 05/07/2016

It was a nice experience to sleep in a yurt when it was windy and rainy (not all the time luckily) outside. We stayed warm enough with covers (we took one from home and it was useful) and fire. There was lots of space to run around and the swings and kite were a delight. A warm shower as well.
Polperro and Looe were very nice and it was easy to walk to Polperro.

    Disliked:

From the description I had understood that the free basket of logs would be waiting for us in our yurt, but it wasn't so. I'm OK with using a hatchet though, but the wood wasn't really dry, so it was a bit smoky. Also there was no gas cooker in the yurt, but it would've been unnecessary for us anyway.
I would have liked to know and see something about the farm!

From the manager...

I'm glad you liked the showers and facilities. I think a tx message or a phone call is the general port of call if you are missing anything. I usually put the 1st free basket of logs inside the yurt, but it appears i may have forgotten on this occasion it seems so apologies there. I tend to leave guests to their own devices/privacy etc. but if there is anything you would like, i am willing to help you with it, i would certainly recommend a phone call or tx msg for trivial things. The log shed position is indicated on the map and full of dry wood. The gas stoves are in the utility room and guests may notice directions to the farm are also on there, but once again feel free to tx/call if you're not sure about anything during future holidays.

Dogs being allowed off the lead! There was one quite aggressive dog at the beginning of our stay

From the manager...

Sorry to hear this, i remember one dog being quite playful around everyone a few weeks back. I love dogs myself, but i appreciate not everyone loves dogs as much as me. If this sort of thing happens again, i would let the owner know that it's nothing personal, you are just not a fan of dogs in general. Most people would understand and not take it personally. If problem persists, maybe make the site manager (me) aware and i can speak to them for you, without causing any ill feeling etc. But thank you for the kind comments with regards to the location, hospitality and facilities. I really appreciate this and hope you feel very welcome to return again in the future. Matt

Directions

From the A38, follow the signs towards Looe. At Widegates, take the diversion to Sandplace Road which will take you to Looe along the bottom road (the top road is closed).

Once in Looe, go over the bridge and follow the signs towards Polperro. After about 10 minutes you'll go down the hill into Polperro and see the Crumplehorn Pub with its large waterwheel. Go straight over the mini roundabout here.

About 15 minutes after the mini roundabout, take the first right up Kellow Hill. You'll go past Great Kellow Camping, and we are the third turn on your left for West Kellow Farm. The gate for West Kellow Yurts is the first on your left (after about 20 minutes) once you've turned down the farm track for West Kellow Farm.

Local attractions

The narrow winding streets of the village of Polperro, half-mile walk across the field and down a lane from West Kellow Yurts, are perfect places to while away a day or an evening, especially as the village's several pubs (four with beer gardens) often have live music and performances in the summer months.

If you're in village in June, we recommend the Polperro Festival; if you're in village any other time of year, we recommend the Polperro Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing (aarrr): you may already know that both have their place in Cornish history… The museum is open from March to October, handily at the same time as West Kellow Yurts.

There's loads more to see within easy driving distance from your hammock whether you want a secluded cove, popular surfing spot, the walks of the South West Coast Path or well-known Cornish attractions like the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, both nearby.

Looe and Fowey, both harbour towns, are ten and 20 minutes away respectively, Fowey via the passenger ferry from Mevagissey.

At Looe, look for the trawlers on the quay (pic alert) and take a boat trip out from the beach to spy the sharks – you can hike the 12 miles of the South West Coast Path from here to Fowey if you fancy it...

Or get riled up at Adrenalin Quarry at Menheniot, 'throwing people off cliffs since 2009', where you can toss your beloved off said cliffs, zoom over the lake in a zipwire and take the Giant Swing ride – extra stomach possibly required.
