West Kellow Yurts: Sea view from the Blue Jay Cowboy wagon

General

  • Cornish glamping with spectacular views, half a mile from Polperro
  • Hammock, picnic bench, outdoor seating and firepit on each unit
  • Eco-friendly with solar power, natural spring and wildlife pond

What a smashing little site is West Kellow Yurts in Cornwall, 10 minutes' drive from Looe and set on a hillside between Polperro and Lansallos. (Before you read any further, so look at the site pics…)

You might dither over deciding your fave feature of this scenic setting: the splendid countryside and sea views (really, look at the site pics), or the thoughtful touches put into the glamping accommodation placed on a nine-acre field of an organic farm. Want your own hammock to sway gently in the Cornish breeze by day or look at the stars by night? A campfire tripod, Dutch oven, barbecue and kebab stewers on each pitch? Own personal picnic bench and outdoor seating area for communal banquets? Done, done and done.

Matt and team have set everything up here so guests can start seriously relaxing the minute they arrive: a welcome pack will await and all accommodation has kitchen areas and an outdoor firepit. There's also a well-equipped communal kitchen on site with gas hobs, fridge freezer, microwave and coffee room, in the amenities block which comes with a luxury and modern wetroom with toilets and hot showers.

Also on site, wanderers will find a most pretty wildlife pond – again, have a look at the site pics…

Please note

There is no staffed reception area and there may not always be someone on site, so please contact the site when you are on your way with your estimated time of arrival and we will be there to welcome you. You must provide your booking ID.

Excellent site with clean facilities and felt very private with lots of space between the yurts. Great location near Polperro.

    Disliked:

From the manager...

Thanks guys. I think the location of being 15 mins walk into Polperro is popular with many of our guests. Then a taxi home is only 7 pounds from Polperro if required. Being really well spread out is just what people are after more so now than ever. Hannafore to Talland and onto Polperro is my favourite coastal walk, but Lantic Bay and Whitsand Bay also have spectacular views!

Beautiful location, it really felt like a seclusion from the chaos outside, a nice walk down the road and your straight onto the coastal path.

    Disliked:

A little pricey, £110 a night for a stay in a basic yurt with no insulation and then have to pay extra for wood to use in the burner to keep warm. Also no bin for rubbish so had to leave laying around the yurt until we went to the shared kitchen. Also no lighter so had to scramble around to find something in the shared kitchen to get the fire going.

From the manager...

Hi. Yeah, we had to replace the little yurt bin as one of the handles had cracked. Each yurt has 1, if not 2 lighters in the bedside drawer, but there are also lots in the kitchen if required. As for the logs, we leave each couple a basket of logs inside the yurt which is included in the price. Then it's around cost price at 6 pounds a basket, which guests can purchase from the log shed using a balance transfer or cash. I suppose if logs were free, some people would be throwing them on the camp fires a bit more liberally, which is not great. But thanks for the kind comments about the location and coastal walking opportunities we have. Feel free to send a tx msg to me if you are unsure about anything and don't enjoy the mini confrontation around potentially offending a campsite manager =) . I'm fairly harmless though, especially if I've eaten lol

    Disliked:

The yurts are expensive for what they are and slightly further from Polperro than described.
First night we hardly got any sleep as one of the other yurts were incredibly loud.

From the manager...

Hi. We rarely get loud guests, so that's very surprising. The yurts are around 5K to buy and we get them off of a lovely family run business in Somerset. It's generally a great site for relaxing as you can only hear the skylarks in the sky. The yurts are exactly 0.7 miles away from the start of the main street in Polperro and the lovely Crumplehorn pub, who usually have good outdoor live music on Sunday afternoons. This is around 1km away, so if one were to travel at a typical walking speed of 4km/hour, it would take about 15 mins...as advertised ;)

The location. The warmth of the hut. Very cosy

    Disliked:

Plastic in our water from the water barrel.

From the manager...

Glad to hear you enjoyed our cosy huts and yurts. They are occasionally too warm if the log burner is roaring away aren't they, even in cold weather! The maintenance man sends his apologies, as he said when he drilled a hole in the new water barrel, a couple of shavings went inside. He thought he'd rinsed it out properly, but maybe one or two shavings clung on inside, but it's obviously rinsed out properly now. We have had some really thoughtful and fantastic guests this year who have left some great comments in our kitchen area. Makes the job really pleasant for me, so thank you to all you amazing people.

Very quiet and close to local village

    Disliked:

Shower facilities, room was quickly wet and difficult to get dressed!

From the manager...

Not having children myself, the other guests I have asked, have said they managed fine when showering their young children. They said with the 3 clothes pegs provided inside the shower rooms, along with the raised wooden platforms to keep their feet dry, it's actually easier than the typical swimming pool shower time and with much more space. Perhaps the young pups were just having a bad day, which happens to the best of us. We have kite flying, a 9 hole footy golf course, giant jenga, swings, swing ball and a duck pond next to the chicken coupe to occupy kids. It's also set in an 9 acre field for them to play their own games. However, we don't have a flashing arcade or the high stimulus noisy activities for the kids like some parks do, but that's simply not the style of relaxing break we are aiming for. Even the footy golf is at the other end of the field so they don't wake up the adults in the hammock or sun lounger =)

Local attractions

The narrow winding streets of the village of Polperro, a half-mile walk across the field and down a lane from West Kellow Yurts include several pubs (four with beer gardens) which often have live music and performances in the summer months.

If you're in Polperro in June, potter along to the Polperro Festival; if you're in village any other time of year, potter along to the Polperro Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing (aarrr): you may already know that both snuggling and fishing have their place in Cornish history…

There's loads more to see within easy driving distance from your hammock whether you want a secluded cove, popular surfing spot, the walks of the South West Coast Path or well-known Cornish attractions like the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, both nearby.

Looe and Fowey, both harbour towns, are 10 and 20 minutes away respectively; Fowey via the passenger ferry from Mevagissey. At Looe, look for the trawlers on the quay (pic alert) and take a boat trip out from the beach to spy the sharks – you can hike the 12 miles of the South West Coast Path from here to Fowey if you fancy it…

Or get riled up at Adrenalin Quarry at Menheniot, 'throwing people off cliffs since 2009', where you can also zoom over the lake in a zipwire and take the Giant Swing ride – extra stomach possibly required.

Must see
