Great Trethew Manor Camping: Grounds

General

  • No-frills rural Cornwall camping 16 miles from Plymouth
  • A 40-minute drive to the Eden Project; 15 minutes to southern beaches
  • Simple field pitches close to a hotel with bar, restaurant and gardens

Stay at Great Trethew Manor Camping and you’re all set up for leisurely meanders in gorgeous Cornish scenery. A down-to-earth campsite with wild pitches on hilly fields, there are a few frills thrown in, including plenty of parking on site and – here’s the winner – the historic Great Trethew Manor Hotel within a few minutes’ walk.

Surrounded by 40 acres of gardens, the hotel is open for lunch and dinner – there’s a kids’ menu too – so you can pop in for a locally brewed beer and a bar snack or book in for supper by the blazing log fire. With beamed ceilings and traditional flagstone floors, the place is a cosy retreat in winter; in summer, you can dine on the terrace or grill meats on a barbecue.

Woodland paths, ornamental ponds and glorious views are all yours to explore. If you’re lucky, you might get to see foxes, squirrels or deer as well as pheasant and hawks. And of course, you’re bound to encounter the friendly peacocks roaming the grounds.

Ponies are on hand if you fancy exploring locally on horseback; if you've got your sights set further afield, the site is in a great location just a mile off the A38 trunk road about 16 miles from Plymouth. It’s a smashing jumping-off point for discovering the beaches and big-hitting attractions of Devon and Cornwall.

Very good Food, friendly staff, fantastic setting, friendly peacocks, plenty of water taps and electric sockets. On-site pub/restaurant. Facilities nearby. Nearly level pitches. Plenty of good walks. Shop a short distance by car.

    Disliked:

Lack of safety on campsite for guests. Open door on shed with Yale lock, (kids could get shut in) no railings round facilities block path (steep drop) and needs proper ramp. Concrete areas on grass pitch with big bolts just under grass. Little regard for disabled users. Could do with hose for septic tank cleaning

Very lovely location but a poorly setup site!12/07/2021

Manor House including the bar & restaurant, pleasant staff, quiet country location, the peacocks!

    Disliked:

Badly laid out pitches on a rough and hard surface (some pitches even have badly filled trenches & pits). Pitches 1&2 would probably require a 40m cable to reach the electric hookup with the cable laid out in a sensible & safe fashion! Appalling shower pressure (we were the only pitch in use nights 2-4 & still the pressure was terrible, can't imagine how bad it would be with more people onsite!) No washing up, clothes washing/drying facilities or freezing facilities so therefore not value for money at all!

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, we take our customers comments on board whenever we can. Since your visit with us, we have now upgraded the pitches so that all have an electric hook up, so extra long cables are no longer required. We have also opened up a washing and laundry room for our guests use. We currently do not have a freezer facility but it is something that we will certainly look in to along with the water pressure.

We are a new campsite and we endeavour to keep upgrading whenever we can.

The damn peacocks! So noisy! Facilities minimal, no washing up area. Showers were awful, either no pressure or cold. Electric hookups are not marked clearly and not next to all the electric pitches which meant we had to buy an extra extension cable to reach. Too pricey for what you get

Local attractions

There’s masses to do around and about the campsite, with pony rides and fishing in the grounds of Great Trethew Manor Hotel, but a day out on the zipwires and go karts at Adrenalin Quarry (five minutes’ drive) is surely on the cards for the kids. Another Cornish big hitter is the Eden Project (40 minutes), where futuristic biospheres house an ever-changing landscape of flowers and plants.

In less than 20 minutes, you’ll hit the spectacular Cornish coastline, where you can paddle in the sea off tiny coves and go crabbing in rockpools with the kids. Teens might like to catch a few surfing waves or take jetski safaris along the coastline.

On more sedate days trips, you can feast on delicious seafood in the cute fishing village of Looe (15 minutes) or –further afield but worth the dramatic drive – stand on the southernmost tip of England at Land's End (one hour 40 minutes).
