Great Trethew Manor Camping: Campsite view from bottom

General

  • No-frills rural Cornwall camping 16 miles from Plymouth
  • A 40-minute drive to the Eden Project; 15 minutes to southern beaches
  • Simple field pitches close to a hotel with bar, restaurant and gardens

Stay at Great Trethew Manor Camping and you’re all set up for leisurely meanders in gorgeous Cornish scenery. A down-to-earth campsite with wild pitches on hilly fields, there are a few frills thrown in, including plenty of parking on site and – here’s the winner – the historic Great Trethew Manor Hotel within a few minutes’ walk.

Surrounded by 40 acres of gardens, the hotel is open for lunch and dinner – there’s a kids’ menu too – so you can pop in for a locally brewed beer and a bar snack or book in for supper by the blazing log fire. With beamed ceilings and traditional flagstone floors, the place is a cosy retreat in winter; in summer, you can dine on the terrace or grill meats on a barbecue.

Woodland paths, ornamental ponds and glorious views are all yours to explore. If you’re lucky, you might get to see foxes, squirrels or deer as well as pheasant and hawks. And of course, you’re bound to encounter the friendly peacocks roaming the grounds.

Ponies are on hand if you fancy exploring locally on horseback; if you've got your sights set further afield, the site is in a great location just a mile off the A38 trunk road about 16 miles from Plymouth. It’s a smashing jumping-off point for discovering the beaches and big-hitting attractions of Devon and Cornwall.

    Lovely environment.

    Disliked:

Found the bar & restaurant prices weren’t realistic with the surroundings. Whilst it’s called a manor I didn’t think it came across as being looked after enough. Ladies showers lacked pressure & HOT WATER!!!
My husband had to stand guard for me to use the men’s showers as theirs had hot water

The friendly peacocks roaming the place, electric and water points on pitches.

    Disliked:

The camping area is very uneven and the pitches aren’t very good for camping, it is quite small and awkward to manoeuvre your van. The toilet/shower block was a bit dirty and the pressure in the showers was very low. The access to the site is quite bad for caravans. Whilst I appreciate that they are trying hard to make it in to a campsite I just don’t think it has the potential for it and it would be better for adult camping, as I don’t think it’s child friendly.
Also in my opinion it was very expensive for the quality.

clean site in ideal location 6 miles from the coast …08/31/2021

clean site in ideal location 6 miles from the coast and 15 minute walk from Menheniot railway station which is on the mainline - hotel bar is very nice, although a little pricey, and they also do meals - Peacocks are a feature here (there are over 20)

    Disliked:

the toilet block really lets this site down - a little investment is really needed here
the mens showers have no pressure and are not hot - the sinks have no mirror or soap - one of the toilet seats was broken and on one occasion there was no loo roll.
we were also on a pitch which was totally in shadow of a large tree in the early evening - which is when you want to sit outside, but i guess that is the luck of the draw !

Local attractions

There’s masses to do around and about the campsite, with pony rides and fishing in the grounds of Great Trethew Manor Hotel, but a day out on the zipwires and go karts at Adrenalin Quarry (five minutes’ drive) is surely on the cards for the kids. Another Cornish big hitter is the Eden Project (40 minutes), where futuristic biospheres house an ever-changing landscape of flowers and plants.

In less than 20 minutes, you’ll hit the spectacular Cornish coastline, where you can paddle in the sea off tiny coves and go crabbing in rockpools with the kids. Teens might like to catch a few surfing waves or take jetski safaris along the coastline.

On more sedate days trips, you can feast on delicious seafood in the cute fishing village of Looe (15 minutes) or –further afield but worth the dramatic drive – stand on the southernmost tip of England at Land's End (one hour 40 minutes).

Must see

  • National Marine Aquarium (20.7 kilometres)
  • Eden Project (25.5 kilometres)
  • Dartmoor Zoological Park (29.7 kilometres)
